Gaim 2.0.0 beta 3.1 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)

Gaim is not worth the trouble

I have been using Gaim successfully for years now, and still use it on the Linux platform. Unfortunately, gtk's support for windows is not very good and due to some complicated bug in the gtk (some dll libraries shared by apps ported to windows from a linux environment called gnome) the Gaim development team has not been producing releases that use the newer gtk. Since I also use "the gimp" image editor, as well as the gourmet recipe manager, I must keep the gtk updated. That is why, after lots of trying to get them all to work together, I am abandoning gaim for windows. Even the portable version of gaim doesn't work with gtk 2.8 installed on my system. I am moving to the miranda im program, though I don't like the interface as much. I hope that some day the gtk for windows gets fixed! [alert admin]

BitTorrent 4.20.2 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)

Lost Features in this update

The new bittorrent client kinda sucks. It doesn't display how much you have uploaded anywhere, so you have no idea what your ratio is. If you try to shut down your computer, bittorrent will not end on its own and will generate errors bringing up dr. watson. However it still gets the torrents for you and is not bloated. I recommend staying with an older version unless you need one of the new features. I am thinking of switching to azureus so that I can once more monitor my uploads. This may be in part due to the creator of bittorrent's new arrangments to distribute legal content (speculation) and certain program features being shelved are a concession to media companies. Ogg Drop 1.0 (Mac OS X)

great program...

if it does what it advertises. there is no opensource freeware solution that you can install for osx that doesn't require a phd in computer science except this one. i don't know how to use freedb, at least on 1.0b4 it is not working automatically and there doesn't appear to be a button for it. I also am having trouble with the download for 1.0, because i am getting "failed to mount" errors on my g4. oh well, i guess i have to keep using windows to rip my cds, buggers. [alert admin]

WinAmp 5.06 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)

winamp is efficient and user friendly

to all the people who keep ranting about itunes, consider how much processor power it uses, what a large window it takes up, its not very userfriendly customization options, etc. you can't tell itunes for example how to display metadata in a playlist, you can't use itunes to play mpc files or many other formats for that matter, and the list goes on and on. ever had itunes' database mess up? you guys are just stuck in your cute little apple world. i have both osx and windows, and one of osx's big problems is the lack of good free software. Whamb is way better than itunes, but xmms is the best osx media player. itunes is constantly messing up id3 tags, also! they don't even make compatible id3 tags, they don't display properly in many programs. also it is a slow and cumbersome program. winamp has excellent hotkeys, it supports every format you could want, even the stupid .m4a format, and it can occupy a very small part of your screen. Plus it is highly customizable. And the media library actually supports a large number of files, like in the tens of thousands, unlike the peice of crap itunes. i am very happy with winamp, and bought a license once years ago. foobar2000 is the only media player for the win platform that gives winamp a run for its money.
