Yes/No Free 1.0 (iPhone)

Why?

What does one do in a 100 K program to choose between yes and no? How difficult is it? Flip a coin - no computer required. At least it's free - just about what it's worth. [alert admin]

iAnswers 1.0 (iPhone)

Huh?

I think I'd rather flip my pocket change than pay out $.99 to answer a yes or no question. After all there are only two choices. [alert admin]

Perfect Diet Tracker 1.0.3.0 (Mac OS X)

Not worth the price

Although this is a nice product with a pretty GUI it pales in comparison to Calorie King. CK's food database is more than 7 times the size of the one with Perfect Diet Tracker. It's calorie estimates for weight loss are more accurate and CK provides better information on your intake and exercise tracking. Furthermore CK costs the same and provides a free demo. If you want a really good diet tracker Calorie King is the way to go. [alert admin]

Tables 1.1 (Mac OS X)

An Excellent Spreadsheet

I was originally reluctant to use Tables when it first emerged because it lacked so much Excel functionality that it would be nearly impossible to use Tables with existing Excel spreadsheets. However, with version 1.0.5 Tables contained enough Excel functionality to merit serious evaluation. It still needed work to iron out some bugs, and it still lacked a few essential elements of Excel, but each subsequent version has improved Tables significantly. The author, Daniel Schwill, has been very responsive both to repairing bugs and adding features. Today Tables is maturing nicely. It provides close to 90 percent of the most useful and frequently needed features of Excel. Tables is more than adequate now for basic to intermediate spreadsheet needs. Only the most sophisticated of spreadsheets running in Excel will probably not yet work in Tables. If you use iWorks and miss having a real spreadsheet application, then Tables is for you. Tables also complements other word processors such as Nisus Writer. Tables is a Universal Binary application which means it runs natively on both PowerPC and Intel Macs. I am quite pleased with the purchase of Tables and its continued growth. In my opinion it's the best of the independent spreadsheet competitors [alert admin]

Investment Property Analyzer 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Don't bother

This program is hardly more useful than a standard calculator. If you have a spreadsheet you can put together all that this program does in about 10 minutes (for free.) The shareware price is ridiculous. For what this program does the author should pay you to download it. And in addition to this the return calculation is not a correct discounted return but a simple cash-on-cash return. Results information includes a value called Rent as % of Market Value- what market value? Furthermore, it's wrong to use monthly rent. It's also the wrong terminology, should be the inverse and called Gross Rent Multiplier. Program only designed for residential rentals. Incorporates no facility for rental or expense increases or decreases and provides minimal results data and does not include discounted cash flow, multi-period forecasts, or IRR. You can download free spreadsheets that do far more than this program does. Don't waste your time. [alert admin]

Finder Cut & Paste 0.1 (Mac OS X)

Alternative that's easier

You can simply create an Automator action that can be bound to the Finder as a contextual menu item. No scripting required. Takes two steps already built-in to Automator: 1. Get Selected Finder Items; 2. Move Finder Items. [alert admin]

Stellarium 0.8.0a (Mac OS X)

This version doesn't work

Version 0.8.0a does not work on an Intel MBP. I'm guessing it's because the separate frameworks may themselves not be universal binaries. The version I downloaded begins to load, pops up a blue background, then immediately quits. I've even installed the most recent version of one of the frameworks without any success. Version 0.8.0 does work but is not a universal binary. Version 0.8.0a gets a bit further loading when forced to run in Rosetta, but once the logo appears and some of the resource loading has completed it completely crashed the computer requiring a forced shutdown and restart. I wish that the author would (a) thoroughly test the versions for Intel Macs on an Intel Mac to assure it works; (b) include the required frameworks making sure they too are universal binaries; (c) decide which frameworks are actually required - 2 or 3. This is the second or third effort at a universal binary of Stellarium and so far none of them have worked. [alert admin]

Needs some work, but good start

Has some decent features in terms of data attributes you can track for your software. However, has no data manipulation capabilities such as Search or Find, no selection criteria. For example, it would be nice to be able to search the database and list all software titles from a specific publisher. There's no data import or export function. If I kept my data in a text file or another application, there is no way to import that data to this program. There is no documentation. No obvious information how to contact author for support. In summation this has promise but it needs work. It has no security, so it has little to offer competitively with similar products other than it is free. [alert admin]

level4 0.8b (Mac OS X)

Does not work with Tiger

Although the previous version of Level 4 works with Tiger, this latest version appears to have a problem: It will not open a window when selecting "New" from the "File" menu. [alert admin]

MacReporter 2.0 (Mac OS X)

Outstanding long awaited upgrade

The new 2.0 version of Mac Reporter is an outstanding improvement over the old version. Undoubtedly this is the best news/RSS reader around for it's ease of use and flexibility. Ideal for the novice user yet all the required bells and whistles for the more sophisticated and experienced user. Kudos to the developer for an excellent shareware product. [alert admin]

Poor planning on my part.

DrBilly, Shame you have to blame the software and its author for you error. Is it that difficult to assume responsibility for your own actions? Furthermore, by your own admission you're too lazy to find your serial number or to email the author who would gladly accomodate you. That one star rating you gave to the software should be given to you. If you truly are a doctor, I hope I never become…

Problem with Windows Updates

Did you install the Additional Items before installing an OS? If not that may be why you are having a problem. Also be sure you have allocated sufficient memory to the emulation. I used a 256 MB memory allocation and was able to install W2K through SP4. My hardware has 1 GB of RAM.

Quit with the benchmarks...

I laid out the money for the program, took the time to find some useful benchmarking software, took the time to do the benchmarks. They are as useful as anything to compare Guest PC to VPC for those who would like to know if there are meaningful differences in performance for the basic components of the emulation: CPU, disk, and video. Rather than accuse me of being lazy, why don't you contribute something useful instead…

According to what Ive read...

MacUniKern, The directory "chunk" is only required if the standard directory becomes filled. The chunk is added in 4 MB blocks of contiguous space. The risk of directory corruption would only occur if the hard drive were nearly full. Maintaining at least 10 percent (or 2-3 GBs at least) of the drive's capacity as free space would eliminate this risk on any drive large enough to accomodate Panther. Defragging would only be…

Defrag a Journaled Drive?

You cannot defrag a journaled drive. However, you can turn journaling off, defrag the drive, then turn journaling back on. You will find several TILs at Apples Knowledge Base that discusses more about journaling.
