Tuner 1.2 (iPhone)

Works great, with one shortcoming that isn't its fault

This is a great little MP3 and AAC/AACplus stream player. The sound quality of 128 kpbs MP3 streams is fantastic. A 48 kbps AACplus stream wasn't very good, but I believe that was the fault of the low bit rate (AACPlus isn't a miracle maker). The app contains a pretty massive index of music streams/stations to choose from, and you can also add any stream you want by entering its URL. Once started, you can pause the current stream with the play/pause button, or select a different stream. I have only used it over WiFi because I'm on an iPod Touch, but the lower bit-rate streams should work (and from what I've read, do work) even over Edge. The only problem with it, but I don't believe it is the fault of Tuner, is that when you quit out of the application the stream stops playing, unlike when you are playing music files residing on your iPod via the iPod controls. I believe the reason for this is that Apple is not allowing applications to run in the background, and therefore it isn't possible for Tuner to continue playing if you quit out of it. That's too bad, and unfortunately that does make this a little less useful than it could be, so I have to take a star off for it. Hopefully Apple will address this shortcoming of the OS in a future firmware upgrade. None-the-less, this is a fantastic little app that is well worth the asking price. [alert admin]

Mocha VNC Lite 1.0 (iPhone)

Works with 10.5, but not 10.4 for me

At home I tried to use this with 10.4 on my iMac G4 and couldn't get it to work. It would never connect. At work I tried it with my 10.5 MacBook and it worked pretty well. Is anyone else having problems using this with 10.4's Remote Management (not called that - I can't remember what it's called in 10.4)? I did have VNC access enabled and was connecting to the correct IP address. It just times out. P.S. I hope VT's listings of iPhone apps takes off, because the review system in the iTunes Store is woefully inadequate (for instance, a message like this would require me to give the software a star rating.) Cro-Mag Rally 1.0 (iPhone)

Impressive and fun, but a bit limited

This game is really well done. It's fun, the graphics are great and the motion control works well (it even keeps your view leveled as you turn the iPod/iPhone). The two big problems with it are that there are no unlockables and there is no network play. This game just begs to be played multiplayer over the net and given that it's restricted to single player, it could really use things to unlock. Without either of those things the longevity of the game is limited. It does pass the time, though, and it's a great show off game for your iPhone/iPod Touch. Also, lacking network play seems to be a shortcoming in general with the current crop of iPhone games, not just this one. I don't know if that's because it's impossible with the current developer kit, or if nobody has bothered to implement network play yet. Maybe they'll add network play in a future update, but I have my doubts about it. Given the quality of the game I think the $10 price tag is justified, but I really wish it had net play and/or unlockables. Also, iPhone games need to have downloadable demos, but that's a problem with the AppStore and not with this particular game. [alert admin]

Verbose 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Not really shareware - it's freeware

I was taken aback by the shareware labeling on this program, but a visit to the authors website reveals that this program is freeware, not shareware. Just a mislabeling at vt. [alert admin]

Temperature Monitor Widget 1.2 (Mac OS X)

Agreed - pointlessly wide

Why make it so wide? There's more white space than there is information. Slim it down and you've got something. Still, it's nice to have this feature, so recommended. [alert admin]

Apple AirPort Extreme 2005-001 (Mac OS X)

Does work with my Linksys 802.11g PCI card

I'm happy to report that this does indeed seem to work with at least my Linksys (previous design) 802.11g PCI card. Yeah! [alert admin]

Forty-Two DVD-VX Plus 2.5.9 (Mac OS X)

Download says 2.5.9 but seems to be 2.5.8

The download says 2.5.9, but the application says 2.5.8 when you Get Info on it and in any case the resulting MPEG4 files are still of absolutely horrendous quality even with FTVX's quality/size setting set to the maximum. Inspecting the resulting file shows that the video bitrate is 30.2 K bytes per second, i.e. 241.6 K bits per second. Clearly something is awry, hopefully just a matter of the wrong file being put in the download! [alert admin]

Forty-Two DVD-VX Plus 2.5.7 (Mac OS X)

H.264 iPod export works well, MPEG-4 iPod export is horrendous!

When outputting for an iPod, the source video being an XviD .avi file, it works very well if I use H.264 format (though they for some reason call it something else, the acronym of which escapes me at the moment) though it is painfully slow, as is always the case for H.264. If I select the MPEG-4 iPod option instead, I get horrible, horrible results. The resulting video, even when choosing the maximum size/quality, looks like it has been run through an artistic filter - very, very blocky. Anyone else seeing this? I'm almost ready to upgrade from 1.5.7 because the H.264 option works well and, unlike Apple's QuickTime iPod export, it gives quality options, but I also want the MPEG-4 option to work. Detour 1.5.5 (Mac OS X)

One of my favorite utiliies

I use Detour to route the sound from iTunes and VLC to a USB audio box while everything else is sent to the built-in speakers. The USB audio box is hooked up to my stereo. Detour has worked beautifully for this. I consider Detour to be one of my most satisfying software purchases ever. It was more than worth the asking price. For the moment, at least, Detour still works great. I too hope Rogue will release Detour as an open source project. I can imagine that there may be some issues with doing this, but hopefully those can be overcome and the source released. Detour deserves to live on. [alert admin]

Apple iTunes 6.0 (Mac OS X)

Obgligatory lack of gapless & aacPlus comment

Another "major" revision and another version of iTunes without gapless playback and without aacPlus support. Let alone such support in the iPod. We have a brand new iPod with power enough to do H.264 video, but no gapless audio. Sigh. [alert admin]

Try MPEG Streamclip

No entirely QuickTime-based converter is going to be able to handle muxed video, at least not until Apple adds such support to QuickTime. You might try MPEG Streamclip - it works great, perhaps better than anything else, but only if you get the settings right and it isn't terribly easy to use. Not horrid, but it's not as straight forward as tools like this one.

Low Quality MP4 output issue resolved.

Are you saying that the quality/size control will be disabled and thus we'll have no control over the quality? I hope that we'll get the maximum possible quality if that is the case. I'll sacrifice file size for quality.

Perhaps you shoudl actually try it before commenting?

Let me guess - you've never actually tried it have you? Or you have, but you've only done so with tracks that have a gap between them to start with (or you are on random play.) If you had actually tried it you would quickly come to realize that in fact setting the crossfade to 0 does not work. You still end up with a weird effect between tracks. It's different, but it is there,…

iTunes Version 5.0 a disappointment.

You might want to check and see if, after installing version 5, it changed your EQ setting if you used one. Perhaps you had one set, and then after installing version 5 it reverted to flat or the equalizer turned off. Such a change could dramatically affect how things sound. If it isn't what you are use to hearing, it might sound "worse" at first.

another interesting quirk

Note that there has not yet been an update to the iPod software so this feature may well show up for the iPod yet. On the other hand, it's worth noting that we have had to go without, on the iPod, the iTunes ability to group compilations for quite some time, and that has made that iTunes feature entirely useless for iPod users. Quite some time, it would seem, until today - the iPod nano…

And thank goodness for that!

Sorry, but this not only doesn't bother me, I'm very glad it is finally the case. The main library should include everything in your library. For it to be anything else just doesn't make any sense, at least not to me, and clearly iTunes is managing the podcasts, so they are in your "library". Also note that smart playlists now do work for podcasts. The solution for what you want is to create a smart…

VBR AAC = AACplus ???

Is VBR AAC the same thing as "AACplus"? If so, does it support AACplus audio streams such as those from somafm.com? What about gapless playback - finally there? I guess I'll find out about gapless and AACplus streams, but do want somebody to tell me if AACplus is the same as VBR AAC.

Perfect!

Glad you like it! Among other improvements, the next version, 1.2.0, will include built-in support for your phone - instead of only looking for an "Audio" folder, there is now a list of folders it looks for and I've added in the k750i's folder thanks to your report. If anyone else can provide the path to the audio folder for other devices, please email me with that info and I'll add it.

Only just started trying it, but so far fantastic!

Oh, another thing I'd like to see added is the ability to set the handling of file types via the Get Info dialog (or some similar means), rather than having to use the "Suffix Mapping..." dialog. I.e. select a file of a certain type, Get Info on it and in there you'd be able to set how it is transferred and such.

Podcast support a massive breath of fresh air

I have to admit that I'm turning around on the in-the-library-or-not issue. I do see your point and perhaps it is better to keep them separate. However, I still think it should be possible to create a smart playlist that contains podcasts, in this case without having to add them to the Library. Perhaps this could be achieved by adding a checkbox to the smart playlist editor to include podcasts when matching, so it could…
