Laserlight 2.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Translation help wanted

Note from the developer: I would like to translate Laserlight into more languages (currently it's localized for English and French), but I need translation help to do it. If anyone is interested in helping localize it for another language (either partially or fully) please contact me at oneleftfoot@verizon.net [alert admin]

Send Photos To iPhoto 1.0.0b1 (Mac OS X)

Here's the deal...

This is the developer. We all make mistakes. :) To some, perhaps large, extent, this script is one. Basically my Mom asked me how to add all the photos from an email message to iPhoto, and in looking at it, I didn't see how to do it in any convenient way. The only way I saw to do it was to start a slideshow and manually add each photo via the controls there, one at a time. So I created this script and I thought it pretty cool. Alas, I didn't see that the "Save" button in a Mail message was also actually a pop-up menu, not just a button, one that only works as a menu if you press and hold on it. If you click it it just acts like a button and brings up a save dialog. I don't think I've seen that type of control anywhere else. Call me a fool I suppose. So, yes, as it turns out you can mostly achieve what this script does by clicking and holding on the Save button in a message, which will bring up a menu which has at the bottom, "Add to iPhoto". There may still be value in this script if you wish to send photos from many different messages, because the built-in feature still requires you to open each message and select that menu item, one message at time. Send Photos To iPhoto can operate on all selected messages at once, only pulling out the image attachments. Still, the value of this script certainly isn't what I had originally thought. It's possible, but I haven't been able to try it yet, that this script may have more use in OS X 10.3.9 and earlier - I can't remember when the iPhoto features (of any kind) were added to Mail, but I think it was in 10.4. However, I haven't been able to test Send Photos To iPhoto in 10.3.9. When I find the time to install 10.3 on a firewire drive I'll try it and see how it functions there. Perhaps it has some life left in it for those not yet in 10.4. I did learn some things about scripting Mail.app as well as about supporting drag-and-drop in "application bundle" applescripts, and others may find looking at the script useful, so it's not a total loss. Plus I learned another valuable lesson: don't make your creations available to the world until you've had time to fully determine that it actually is useful. :) [alert admin]

iSquint 1.2.3 (Mac OS X)

Does it really fix the 1.1 firmware issue?

Has anyone re-installed 1.1 firmware on their 60 GB vPod and tested iSquint 1.2.3's claimed fix? Does it really work? If it does work I hope the developer of iSquint is sharing this knowledge with other freeware/open-source developers so that other programs can incorporate it as well such as Handbrake (I've read some saying that Handbrake doesn't have the problem, but I did experience stuttering and other issues with Handbrake converted DVDs when I had the 1.1 firmware, and that went away when I reverted to 1.0 firmware.) Until at least Handbrake also incorporates the fix, I'll be sticking with 1.0 firmware. Anyway, iSquint good. [alert admin]

Periodic pauses and freezes in video playback

It turns out this update isn't all roses, at least not for me. Maybe not even dandelions. Indeed I may go back to version 1.0 on my 60 GB vPod. I have since found that after installing the 1.1 firmware on my vPod, some videos which played just fine prior to the upgrade no longer play successfully. So far these are all videos converted with iSquint using MPEG4 format (not H.264 - I haven't used H.264 in iSquint), where I set the quality to the maximum, and the audio bitrate to 128 kbps. Prior to 1.1 these played perfectly. After installing 1.1, I get about 31 seconds into the videos and then they freeze. If I scan forward a few seconds it will sometimes restart playing, but sometimes without sound. Other times it will start again with sound, but then a bit later it freezes again. I tried moving the iSquint quality down one notch (to "High") and the problem got only slightly better. This time at about 31 seconds it paused for about 3 or 4 seconds, but then continued. However, at 1:22 the video playback froze and didn't restart again. I'm now trying "Standard" quality, but the conversion is in progress as I type. In any case, it's quite disheartening to no longer be able to use the "Go nuts" or even "High" quality settings. Incidentally, I also tried "restoring" my vPod to factory state and reloading it from scratch, but that didn't help. Moreover, playback of a DVD I ripped with Handbrake is showing periodic very brief stutters as well, although I don't know if it was doing this prior to 1.1 as I hadn't tried playing it until today. Is anyone else seeing this problem? [alert admin]

Vastly improved scanning in videos

The first thing I tested after installing this updated on my 60 GB vPod was the fast forward/reverse scanning of videos (press and hold skip forward or skip back). I'm very happy to report that it is vastly improved! Previously it worked poorly, stuttering and often resulting in a long delay when you let go, especially in reverse. It now works consistently both in forward and reverse. You get a rapid sequence of frames as it scans, not unlike how many DVD players scan forward and reverse and it now works great. Yeah! There is also now a "Radio" option in the Main Menu settings - it doesn't seem to show up in the main menu, though, presumably not until you plug in the remote/radio. Good. I didn't notice any other significant changes. The improvement to video scanning is worth the price of admission. Of course, it still doesn't do gapless playback, and it still doesn't sync your subfolders in iTunes, so only 4 stars for you, iPod software. As far as the "documentation", it would be a lot nicer if they told you specifically what was changed with each release rather than having to experiment to find out by ourselves. [alert admin]

Flip4Mac WMV 2.0 (Mac OS X)

Also getting crashes

Ditto the comment about it crashing Safari and QuickTime Player at quit. The problems seems repeatable. Moreover, after uninstalling, the video I tried (Segway Centaur video, as shown on the Flip4Mac WMV home page) played fine, and without crashing Safari, when played with the Microsoft plugin. I imagine this is some conflict with the new version of QuickTime and/or 10.4.4. [alert admin]

Data Backup 2.03 (Mac OS X)

First test backup was a failure

I downloaded Data Backup X to test it out and was encouraged by the pretty nice interface and nice feature set even if it seemed slow in comparison to Carbon Copy Cloner, but in my first test backup, using compression, when I tried to restore an application from the backup, it produced a non-functioning generic application icon. Not exactly promising.... I notice that instead of compressing the entire application as one thing, it strangely compresses the individual files within the application package hierarchy, and no doubt this is the source of the problem. If it would work this program would be fantastic given the feature set. Right now, it doesn't. Also it is missing the ability to do real backups to CD or DVD (saying it can do that, but relying on Finder burning, which among other shortcomings means it can't span multiple discs, is pretty lame IMHO.) iambic Agendus 8.04 (Palm OS)

To do items don't work in 8.0.4

I updated from 8.0.3 to 8.0.4. With 8.0.4 I was not able to check a to-do item as completed. I click the checkbox, the screen flashes, but it remains unchecked. I reverted to 8.0.3 and all was well again. Anybody else see this? [alert admin]

script mod help...

The Applescript language uses colons instead of slashes in paths. So you need to change the "audioFolderName" property as follows: property audioFolderName : "mobile:audio"

Doesn't work... Application locks and keeps relaunching System Prefs.

This is the developer. If possible, please send me your com.apple.universalaccess.plist file which is in your Preferences folder. Send that file to oneleftfoot@verizon.net It appears Laserlight isn't reading your universal access preferences (where the spotlight shortcuts are stored since 10.4.3) correctly and I need to find out what's different about it. This file also stores other keyboard shortcuts, as set in the Keyboard & Mouse system preferences (Keyboard Shortcuts tab). Also, please let me know any…

Not working on G4 iBook 1.33 with OSX 10.4.3, 1.25GB

Apologies for this bug and for the delay in fixing it. 10.4.3 changed how spotlight stores its hotkey preferences, and this broke Laserlight. Version 1.0.6, which resolves this problem, has been submitted to Versiontracker and should appear real soon now. Yes, it works with 10.4.4 as well.

First test backup was a failure

A followup to myself. I also found that the non-function application that it restored did not have the same ownership/group/privileges as the original - when I tried to delete it the Finder required me to authenticate.

Got a response

For the record, I tried sending an email again, this time to all email addresses I could find on their contacts page, and I did finally get a response. I think the web site needs to remove the mrkai@kaisakura.com address and any others that are ignored.

Two major drawbacks...

You missed the "Local" submenu under the "File" menu. You can use that to browse your local machine within Interarchy. However, it is a bit awkwardly implemented. Myself I don't dislike using the Finder for this and I do dislike the two-pane approach of other programs. Most of the time I'm using Interarchy to edit files on servers directly anyway so the downloading to Mac part is transparent.

Are you saying that, by design, installing Palm Desktop 4.2.1 will break your syncing capability until you figure out what is wrong and then figure out how to fix it. This is support?

Headless

An easier option than manually running OSXvnc from the command-line is to get "Share My Desktop". Run that and instead of using its main GUI-oriented VNC server, in the File menu there is an option to set up a "system VNC server" which sets up a background server that is available at startup. To clarify my own comments

When I say it will take a long time to back up 27 GB, it needs to be noted that I didn't have any prior tape backup experience. What I meant was that, coming from a background of backing up to a firewire hard drive, and given that my test backups with the limited demo version "felt" fast, I was somewhat taken aback when I saw that a 27 GB backup was going to take…
