Quicksilver 1.0b51 (Mac OS X)

Newbie weighing in

Three days ago I downloaded Quick Silver, opened it, said WTH is this?! and quit the program. But later that day I re-opened it and commited to a one-week trial. Within minutes I was convinced that QS was something special. Pretty much just using it as a launcher so far but I've experimented with some of the more sophisticated things it can do. It's a keeper. Soon I'll be discarding all my little launcher apps and menu drop-downs and side drawer widget thingies. [alert admin]

TapDex 3.0.3 (Mac OS X)

Smooth

Tapdex saves me a few seconds several times every day. That tiny window (it's always only as big as it needs to be) floats on top of everything else for just as long as you need it. You don't have to tell it to go away; it's smart enough to disappear as soon as you start doing something else. [alert admin]

OmniWeb 5.5 beta 2 (Mac OS X)

I'm hooked on the demo

Every once in a while I give OmniWeb a tryout, always knowing that I'd never pay $ for a browser. But this version is so good that I am considering buying a license. Once you get used to those drag & drop graphic tabs it's hard to do without them. On the minus side, I do get "unsupported browser" messages at a couple websites. Hard to justify the $30 when that happens. [alert admin]

FileChute 2.0.6 (Mac OS X)

I has one annoying feature

Love Filechute but I hate the "Delete Expired Files?" option-window that pops up when you have old files on the server. If you have files older than 60 days, that window pops up every time you start the app. Why do I have to click through the thing every time? Furthermore, the default/focus is "delete" so you're forced to use the mouse. One sleepy morning I hit "return" and deleted a quarter gig of photos. Why can't I set "delete files after" to "never"? Okay, I just now discovered that you can type in a large number of days, say, 5,000, so that's a fix. Took me a year to find it, though, and I would still prefer a "never" option in the drop-down. TheDailyGrind 2.0 (Mac OS X)

Smooth

Lots of features behind a simple interface. It keeps multiple (and nameable) timers in a list that can be reordered via drag-&-drop, data can be copied & pasted, and the widget remembers times through a reboot. Easy to use, price is right. Thanks. [alert admin]

DeskBrowse 1.0b4 (Mac OS X)

Nice effort

I like this browser. It's smart and different and nice to look at. It probably won't replace Safari or Firefox but I don't think it was meant to. It's more of a quick cruiser, sliding on and off screen with a hot key. Almost like a widget. (And unlike many popular browsers, it passes the Acid2 Test.) [alert admin]

Blizzard Starcraft Brood War 1.13f (Mac OS X)

Three Cheers for Blizzard

Upgraded, followed install instructions, everything's fine. Battlenet is fine. Note: The Starcraft folder that the installation instructions refer to should be inside your Starcraft Broodwar folder. Fantabulous that Blizzard continues to update this GREAT old game. [alert admin]

Site preferences

Good idea, Jerry; hadn't thought of that. Just tried it and it didn't work at my bank site, though. (Still, it's a valuable tip.)

Re: Still Confusing

It is a bit confusing; took me two tries. When the install instructions say: "Find the StarCraft folder on your hard drive, and open it." The StarCraft folder they refer to is inside your Starcraft Broodwar folder. That's how it worked more me, anyway. (I somehow have another Starcraft folder at the same level as my Starcraft Broodwar folder, probably created when I got confused installing the expansion pack. That's the one I mistakenly upgraded the first…

Onyx has "Shutdown when done"

Setting your energy saver to shut down seems like a lot of trouble. And the preference is permanent until unset (you can't set it to shut down only once). Besides, why shutdown-startup-shutdown when a simple shutdown will do? Try Onyx.
