DVDRemaster 5.0 (Mac OS X)
There are nowhere near as many controls for encoding videos as Handbrake. Particularly lacking are options for deinterlace/decomb and deblocking etc It also won't let me convert anything but DVD content (which Handbrake can). The remaster and extract options look like a good replacement for DVD2OneX and MacTheRipper. Some more encoding customisation and this would overtake handbrake as my encoder of choice. [alert admin]

Hear 1.0.3 (Mac OS X)
I used to use this product when it was OSS 3D but it ran in to all sorts of problems when they switched to the daemon model. Uninstalling in particular was difficult and my sound (which sounded worse not better) did not restore until hunting down and exterminating something hidden in the System folder. A lot of people were having difficulty with this at the time. As a consequence I am very wary of trying this program again. I hope they got their act together and implemented a working uninstaller and/or told you exactly what to do to uninstall when you like. I did like the space effect as you could simulate a live concert with your studio albums, but most of the rest of the audio tweaks seemed unnecessary. I'll give it another go and report any problems. I agree $50 is excessive. [alert admin]

Inkscape 0.46 (Mac OS X)
This X11 App requires the latest builds of X11 from http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki in order to work. This X11 update will get overwritten whenever Apple updates X11 in either a software update or separately. For me, it's too much effort to bother updating X11 and potentially have it overwritten when 10.5.3 comes out. The interface in X11 doesn't look that nice anyway. Aparently there is a Mac native version in the works and I'll look at it again if that comes out. [alert admin]

Curator 1.1 (Mac OS X)
Does not recognise albums as having artwork when they do in iTunes. The downloading and usage features are basic and unintuitive. Stay away. [alert admin]

I've used Yahoo Messenger for over a year as an alternative to MSN with the benefit that I could still add and chat to MSN contacts (albeit without video and file-transfer capabilities). Unfortunately though, even MSN chat capabilities have been broken for over a month and there is still no update from Yahoo. This slow pace of development (it's been beta for how long now...a year at least???) makes me feel like surrendering and getting an MSN passport again :(...but what alternative is there if you want to chat to MSN contacts??? The sad thing is, if Microsoft buys Yahoo, Yahoo chat will be the first to go! [alert admin]

Yahoo! Messenger 3.0b1r4 (Mac OS X)
Yahoo is better than Microsoft's MSN effort on the Mac, at least they've incorporated functioning video chat, but this version seems to be have more bugs than the previous beta build with some trouble sending/receiving files and the chat window constantly scrolls back to the start whenever a message is received...VERY frustrating. Still, the interface is very clean and Mac-like, hoping the next Beta build is an improvement. [alert admin]

Don't pay for this...no preference settings, couldn't even make a 2-1 copy (which is its main selling point). Looking at the website the developer has (I kid you not) no fewer than 9 ripper/converter titles and it charges as much as $49 each!!!!! This company has deliberately split features between multiple titles to maximise profits...but $49 for a software that does little more than free alternatives...you have to give them credit for trying!!! Has anyone noticed Graphic Converter is not available on Apple's download page? I wonder if they had some kind of dispute! [alert admin]

You're correct in calling your comment absolutely useless. For someone who thinks this software is so bad but is too lazy to justify their reasoning, perhaps you can point us toward your own drawing app? I'm guessing that someone so lazy hasn't got around to writing one and instead would prefer to just bash other developers because they haven't written the perfect app for them. Well I for one have tried this software and…

Compete with what? I tried to find an alternative but there isn't anything. I guess this is the reason they are charging the Star of Africa for it... if someone is desperate enough they might pay it.

There are still major problems. It appears Hear is just OSS 3D with a new (albeit pretty) skin. There seems to be some kind of major memory leak because my VM swap partition ballooned astronomically and therefore brought my entire system to a halt....I'm on the latest Leopard.

OK I managed to get the DVD 2:1 compression to work but there's no way to save the Video_TS folder to burn later, you have to have a blank DVD ready to burn then and there.

just where are you people getting these figures from? communism...hardly. Fascism either directly or indirectly caused the death of at least 200 million people in both world wars, then you've got America's fascism in both Iraq wars...curently half to 1 million at least.
