HomebrewPSP Converter 1.1 (Mac OS X)
Fast development, Mac-only features, stability, free. What else could you ask for in a software package? If this continues to keep up and exceed the feature set of the Windows version of this software, like allowing us to change out the app icon easily, I'll glady make a paypal donation to encourage development. iPSP v2.0.7 (Mac OS X)
Great video support. Other features need work, but getting better. ![]()

I've watched this software as it's been updated in the last few weeks. Now that I have a PSP, I decided to invest in this package since the developer seems to be working on improving the code (and before the price goes up). So far, I've used it for multimedia only (since I'm still waiting to purchase my first PSP game), and have found it to be really great for transcoding movies for use in the PSP. I have to often change whatever movie I have into a DV file since iPSP doesn't seem to like the MP4 video made by my AlchemyTV software. Once I've made the DV file, though, iPSP churns through it like a charm and makes exceptional transportable video. In fact, I just nabbed a file from my Kids in the Hall DVD and transcoded the VOB using iPSP - the results are stunning. Also, iPSP makes THM files for previewing the video on your PSP. Nice touch. I wish it would create THMs for movies I didn't transcode in iPSP, but there's always AltShiva while these developers work on that feature. Image transfers are painless, but since the file structure is already on the Memory Stick after it's formatted and the Stick mounts on your desktop like any removable media, this is no surprise. Anything less would have been. As for music and video transfer, this software still needs work. It might not help that I have over 80 Gigs of AAC files for it to slog through, but it would help if iPSP accessed the file database directly rather than relying on reading the music files themselves every time it wants to refresh the song list. The process is very slow and unreliable for me. iPSP tries to perform exactly the way it should (automatically changing AAC files into MP3s, reading your playlists, and so on...), but often simply fails during the process and stops without warning. I have confidence that this software will continue to improve, but until it does, I'll be transferring music to my PSP manually. Right now, it's the best video transcoder out there for PSP, in my opinion. For that alone, it's worth the price of admission. I'll give it 3 stars for what it already does correctly and one additional appreciation star for already having improved during it's quest to be the perfect tool for PSP. When the bugs are worked out of the other features, I'll up the rating to five stars. [alert admin]

Mozilla Firefox 1.0 (Mac OS X)
Nice. Needs work. Looking forward to 1.1
Lots of great features (can you say Find?). Unfortunately, some aspects of performance seem like pre-release for me. Text fields (including location) are often uneditable unless I click away from the app and back. Tabbing between fields seems to be inconsistent. Almost all the skins are seriously fugly. Safari's still my browser for now. Looking forward to version 1.1. :) [alert admin]

PlayPod 0.1 (Mac OS X)
Lots of great features and promise. I would request support for RSS feeds that don't end in .xml and the ability to change the Genre of all downloaded podcasts. So far, so good. What are your plans regarding cost down the line? Is this a freeware project that will become a shareware project as time goes on? [alert admin]

iPodderX 2.2.3 (Mac OS X)
The latest version of iPodderX takes care of almost every problem I was having before. Well done. Now off to the new features! :) [alert admin]

iPodderX 2.2.1C (Mac OS X)
Version 2.2.1E is out and introduces many new features. Unfortunately, it seems that there is no way to find out what version it is from the site or the downloaded app itself unless you open it. Also, I don't know if this is just me, but the only reason I looked for an upgrade is that my downloads stopped working in the last version i had been using. RSS streams I knew had new content were not being downloaded. When I checked for a new version of iPodderX, the app itself said a new version existed, but said the version number was (null). The program is great and keeps on getting better. I know this is a relatively new phenomenon and that you are developing this app quickly. With this in mind, I respectfully request that you get a handle on version control at this point - early on in the game - before it gets out of hand. Great program so far... keeps getting better... :) [alert admin]

iYML 2.5.2 (Mac OS X)
AppleBeer, this is the second instance in the last 24 hours where I've seen posts from you complaining about how difficult it is to understand a clear description of an application and how that is keeping you from even downloading a FREE product. I see a pattern here... maybe it's not the developer's fault the descriptions aren't clear to you. Maybe if you stop sucking down the suds your motivation for exploring free software will rise to the point where you no longer have to complain in a public forum about it. Put down the brew and step away from the keyboard. [alert admin]

Amadeus II 3.7.2 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
I know this is probably not possible, but if there is any way you could make it so that section marks could be translated into chapters and files could be saved as bookmarkable AACs, my iPod would be very happy. I just bought the new Brian Wilson SMiLE CD and it's tough to listen to with the unavoidable gaps between songs. Thanks for making a great product! [alert admin]

youPod 1.0.2 (Mac OS X)
I downloaded the demo of youPod at home and brought over my Calendar events. When i got to my office, i ran youPod from the iPod and selected Safari Bookmarks from the provided menu. I lost all my bookmarks. Then I quit youPod and the bookmarks were still missing. Then I unmounted my iPod and restarted my Mac... still missing. I was able to find them by searching my hard drive for "bookmarks" and located the backed up file. I'm assuming this might have something to do with it being in demo mode, but it was still a pain to recover from. At the worst, this demo should just not allow you to select items it can't handle. To move files around and then not move them back is either an obvious bug or a really bad implementation of crippled demoware. I'm excited about using this software and would pay for it as long as I won't have this problem after paying and the author will look into why this happened. I'm more than willing to assume my own percentage of responsibility if I did something wrong, but I didn't do anything that should have created this problem, IMO. [alert admin]

Just in case you haven't already figured it out, PodWorks is compatible with 10.4 (Tiger). Also, the comments, images, and other aspects of the ID3 tags are encoded into the actual sound files (AAC, MP3...). If they were there in iTunes, they will be preserved when moved to your iPod. Using PodWorks to move them back to your computer doesn't destroy these features - they will remain intact.

Seems that the fault is somewhere either in the Firefox/Thunerbird dev camp or with CodeTek, makers of VirtualDesktops. It's a great program, but the two do not play nicely together. Hopefully this will be fixed soon since I need CTVD to work each day and would love to start using Firefox. The lack of spellchecking (command-semicolon) is a real bummer too.
