LiteSwitch X 2.6 (Mac OS X)
Sept, 09: LiteSwitch works with Snow Leopard!
I'm not sure what happened, but LiteSwitch now works fully with Snow Leopard, 10.6.1. However, you must install the 2meg Rosetta app when you install SL (you'll see it as a checkbox option under Options). You can now access the preference settings. The Exclude List feature doesn't work through the preference panel directly, but by activating LiteSwitch, and then click and holding onto any open app, you'll see a drop-down menu that allows you to "Don't display in LiteSwitch." It's great to have this app back! [alert admin]

LiteSwitch X 2.6 (Mac OS X)
LiteSwitch was always the first utility I added to my new Macs. But as of 12-12-08, it looks like the company, Proteron, is no more. Their site has been totally taken down, and as of the 10.5.5 Leopard update, LiteSwitch doesn't quite behave. Still works, but you can't access the control panel any more. At least on my Mac Pro Intel 2.66Ghz tower. What a shame. A great, great app. [alert admin]

Daylite 3.7.6 (Mac OS X)
I wouldn't purchase yet. Our experience so far.
Daylite is currently a mess. If you're looking for a PIM, we wouldn't suggest DL until at least version 4 comes out. We converted our office to Daylite over 18 months ago and currently have 7 fully licensed Daylite copies on 6 machines and our 1 server. There is no single other application that increases our stress like Daylite at present. I've had secretaries burst into tears over their frustration with Daylite's inability to sync to iCal and MobileMe and get schedules out to the sales reps in the field. I literally hear desk pounding and "aargh!" on a daily basis for the past couple months. Syncing doesn't work; we get warnings that we don't have enough licenses (we do) so it locks out one of our users; settings don't stick; we get 2-minute long spinning wheels multiple times a day; each week, we spend time trying to troubleshoot by shutting down the server, then each of the 6 Macs, then going through a list of 11 steps that are recommended to get syncing to work again. It's a office's worst nightmare at the moment. Contrary to the poster below (EndlessFx), we do get responses back from DL's support; usually takes about 12 hours. But the feeling we get is that DL engineers can't figure out where the bugs are either at this point. Or perhaps they're working on them and version 4 will be a giant bug fix that will bring Daylite to being a top rate program. But given the substantial costs involved in Daylite licenses and their not-cheap group of trainers out there, I'd hate to see other companies jump into Daylite at this point and spend the large amount of frustration and wasted time and money (thousands at this point) that we've seen. Fix the program, Market Circle. [alert admin]

SteerMouse 3.9 (Mac OS X)
Works perfectly with Logitech MX518 ![]()

I have used USB Overdrive for many years. If you love a great mouse, USBO used to be the must-have application. It always does more than the mouse company's software for Macs, especially Logitech's (which is just horrid and buggy beyond belief). HOWEVER, the current version of USB Overdrive (10.4.8) just doesn't work with many of the more modern mice out there, such as the MX518. lI think Logitech mice are the best out there, especially if you are a fan of shortcuts. From a click on the mouse, you can use all of Exposé's features, switch back and forth on any browser and open a folder. But, Logitech's last great corded mouse that supposedly worked with Macs was the great MX510. That's no longer available. They've upgraded it to the MX518, but their site says "only works with PC." I've used the mouse software USB Overdrive for years. Beats the pants off of Logitech's software by a mile. However, the developer hasn't upgraded it for a long time, and try as I did, I couldn't get it to recognize all 7 of Logitech's buttons. I wrote Alessandro, but never did not hear back from him regarding a fix for the 518. His site does promise a new upgrade, but that's been over a year ago. I finally completely uninstalled USB Overdrive and installed the newer SteerMouse. Works *perfectly* with the new MX518. If you love a good mouse, but were stymied by how many of them seemed to be PC only, my guess is that any mouse will now work with SteerMouse. USB Overdrive may eventually come out with a workable version, and make it a worthwhile mouse application. But given the length of time between upgrades, and the lack of response when emailed, I get the feeling the developer has moved on to other projects, so my suggestion would be to go with SteerMouse. Don't buy yet. Wait for the long-awaited upgrade

Endicia 2.7 (Mac OS X)
I held off on using Endicia for years, mainly because I had a contract with Pitney Bowes (aka PB). But I never liked PB; they charged $75 for software updates, and way too much for their equipment; and their long contracts were ridiculous. So when we opened up a new business venture a year ago, I decided to open up an account with Endicia. Within the first 2 days, I was totally hooked. It's one of those Mac apps that make you smile every time you use it. SO worth their $15/month fee—hell, you make that up in saved time every couple of days. Here are just some of the amazing features: • It's on your Mac! PB isn't. Intuitive software. Ties directly into your Entourage or Address Book contacts. Extremely stable, has never crashed even once, and it's open and running, 24/7. • Makes odd packages (Media Rate, Priority Mail overseas, Flat-Rate boxes, etc) so easy. NO MORE FILLING OUT CUSTOMS FORMS, because Endicia's software does it for you. • Did I mention no more filling out customs forms? • Prints entire shipping labels (stamp, return address, and customer address) all in one label. You just need a stamp? No problem, it can do that, too. • Works perfectly with the best shipping printer ever made, the Zebra 2844. True work horse, and we purchased ours on eBay as a totally refurbished unit (1 year warranty) for $96. Uses cheap 4x6" labels. • Need more postage? Click a button, choose how much ($25-500), and 5 seconds later, it's there. If you're reading this, have a business, and are looking for a shipping system, I highly recommend Endicia. After a full year, it still makes me grin each time I use it. Scott Owner, Brain Toniq http://www.braintoniq.com [alert admin]

Chax 2.1.2b2 (Mac OS X)
Best feature: auto accept Screen Share by name
One of the most overlooked features in Chax is the ability to auto-accept Screen Share, specifically set to certain other users (like just yourself). Where could this be handy? If you travel with a laptop and suddenly realize that you need a file from your home Mac, it's now easy. Just keep your home Mac on, and then from your hotel in Bombay or Sydney or wherever, Screen Share into your home Mac. You can copy files over to you, print stuff from your home printer (for your partner to fax out, etc). It's just a dang cool feature. [alert admin]

Parallels Desktop 3.0 Build 5584.0 (Mac OS X)
We've been using Parallels for the past 6 months on one of our Intel mac machines. We recently purchased another copy for a new iMac. I've never tried their competition (VMware Fusion), so I can't comment on that, but I do want to say that we've run Parallels basically 24/7, and it's never, ever crashed or froze up. It loads XP incredibly fast, and all of the apps we run on it are stable. We've actually never gotten even a spinning beach ball. In a way, it's more stable than Leopard. We're about to push the limits a bit by switching to Windows Quickbooks so that we can use its networking capabilites between Macs, so we may discover an issue there. But I wanted to post our results so that others know that, at least on our setup, Parallels is just one of those rock-solid applications. [alert admin]

Intuit QuickBooks Pro 2005 7.0f28 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
thanks, Jakejess. That worked! Appreciate you mentioning it. 1. Back up your data. 2. Insert your original QB CD 3. Drag the QB file to your Applications folder. It'll ask to replace the one in there. Say yes. 4. Install updater. 5. Run QB. [alert admin]

Nope, it's definitely not dead. Works perfectly on Leopard 10.5.2. Spell Catcher's the first program I add to my new Macs (all Intels). And I do hear there's a new version being developed.
