Alternative to MS Office is in the works.

Try NeoOffice (http://www.neooffice.org/). It's coming along nicely and seems to be about 95 compatible with microsoft word, excel, powerpoint. Worth a try if you absolutely must get away from M$ Office. [alert admin]

RebuildDesktopX 1.0 (Mac OS X)

This worked nicely. Thanks to the dev!

While I agree that the term "desktop rebuild" is misleading, I don't understand why there is so much anger about the implication that OS X may occasionally need some maintenance. Yes, *NIX has been around for a long time, but the AQUA GUI hasn't, and the blend of MacOS functions and *NIX has not. For the record, I think OS X is the best OS out there, and I find it a joy to use. But after recently restoring files during some trouble with file corruption on my drive (faulty drive) I've had wierd problems with the default application being permanently set wrong on various document types, and assorted other strange behavior, apps not opening, strange system lag, etc, which fsck and Disk Utility did nothing to fix. This app fixed the problems in about 3 seconds, AND sped up my machine's boot process. I have no doubt that my problems were caused by some corruption to the files this app removed, as my machine is back in proper OS X shape. Thank you for developing this app, and for posting a list of the shell commands it runs. I had no idea those files controlled so much of my GUI. So, 5 stars for doing what it says it does. Seems bloated for an app that just runs a few shell commands, but I can't argue with success. [alert admin]

Page Sender 3.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Great product and TERRIFIC support!!

I downloaded Page Sender this morning, went through the setup process, and couldn't get it to work. Mind you, this is a Sunday - not a usual day for tech support. I sent an email to Smile Software Support (makers of Page Sender), and they replied almost instantly. We had a six message back and forth email exchange over a couple hours, and they did indeed help me find the problem, which was on my end. The program now works perfectly, and is very easy to use. Turns out the problem was that my computer is connected via DSL, so the phone line doesn't go direct to the computer - have to unplug the phone and attach it directly to send a fax. The tech support person has given me a suggestion for a permanent solution, but in the meantime, I now know how to work around it, using the capability of the program to notify me via email when I receive a fax, and change over as needed to send one. The right tool & it`s getting better

I really appreciate this comment with it's suggestions re how to export to various programs. I have a friend who has IWork and I use Word, though we both have Macs, and since we are both computer semi-literates, we haven't been able to share documents. We are going to try this "export" feature and see it that works. Thanks!! ingrid Scott
