Ad-Aware SE 1.06r1 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)

Perfect For What It Does

Ad-Aware is an essential tool to have to fall back on. While it won't keep spyware from returning (the best thing for that is a firewall) it will find and destroy anything that is already on your computer. If you have having some problems with spyware, run this and you will be amazed at how well this free program works to weed out the junk from your harddrive! [alert admin]

Evidence Eliminator 5.00.0058 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)

Excellent Job!

Computers are very good at remembering things. Records of visited sites and recently view files are all stored away within the directories of any Windows PC. Even deleted files using the recycle bin are not totally destoryed. Not only does Evidence Eliminator clear all of this senstive data out totally, it has a user friendly interface which makes it pleasing to use. If it is your first time using the program and you want to make sure that everything will be cleared out, click on OPTIONS and make sure every task has a check in the box next to it. This will preform all of the programs tasks, that include the deletion of SWAP files, mutipul scans of free space that will weed out any left over data from previously deleted files, clearing of all web browers history and many other things for your saftey. Not only will it clean your computer to a like new condition, it will help inprove the overall running of your system by cleaning out so many files that are unused anyway. The only thing is, the first run of this program can be time consuming. Don't worry, just let this run throughout the day and overnight. When it is all finished, your system will be as good as new! If you are looking to makes your harddrive completely secure, this is your tool. [alert admin]

HandBrake 0.7.1 (Mac OS X)

A Great DVD Ripper

Handbreak might look like an odd program, but it does the job by ripping DVDs to usuable and common files for Mac like MP4 and AVI. There are also loads of other options here, like the ability to cue up what you want to rip, only rip specific chapters and also encode in greyscale. This is only scratching the surface of what you can do with Handbreak. [alert admin]

MacJanitor 1.3 (Mac OS X)

A simple yet effective program

What more can I say? MacJanitor is the best at running the maitnce scrips, which usually will only run at night when your computer is idel. Run this program monthly and you will see the huge preformance boost. Warning for intel iMac users: Because this program is still for PowerPC chips, there is sometimes a few glitches. For example, the program is supposed to close when the cleaning is done, but often it won't. You can still tell when it is finished however: the word DONE will appear in the progress text box. Once done is shown, you can safley shut down. [alert admin]

LiveQuartz 1.6.3 (Mac OS X)

A simple photo editor

While PhotoShop still rules everything and anything in the photo editing world, LiveQuartz is great for people who either can afford to pay for PhotoShop's high prices or just want to do some simple quick photo editing without having to dish out a lot of money for program functions they will probably never use. While LiveQuartz isn't as simple to use as PhotoShop and lacks functions, it still can preform many useful and simple tasks. For example, I use it crop photos with ease. Adding text or color is a breeze too. If you want to just play around with photos and not have to pay a lot to do it, get LiveQuartz. [alert admin]

ClamXav 1.0.5 (Mac OS X)

Very good

Alright, we all know Macs don't get viruses, and this is true enough. I was running my new intel iMac for months before I found about ClamXav and I had no problems at all with viruses or spyware. So naturally paying for an anti-virus program that would probably never see much action didn't seem like a smart investment(currently the only commercial big name virus scanner for Mac is Norton). Then I found out about ClamXav. As as the only free scanner for Mac, this is probably and essential application for anyone who owns an Apple computer as a "just in case" to fall back on if somehow your system might become infected (highly unlikely). On top of the regular scanning engin, there is also a realtime scanner you can use to watch any folder you want on your computer and make sure nothing infectious ends up in them. I would highly recomend selecting the watched folder as one you use to download most of your stuff from the internet into. Once again, this is a must have program for any Mac that MIGHT have the chance it could get infected. [alert admin]

OnyX 1.7.5 (Mac OS X)

Amazing Free Program

If you do lots of work with your harddrive, I would highly recomend getting OnyX. As a free program OnyX has many useful functions that are very easy to use and get the job done. Not only does this application allow you to run things like Disc Utility and Browser Resetting all in one place, it also is loaded with many other options such as system optimization that speeds up the computer, and Cache and Log clearing to open up room by getting rid of unwanted data. In all, this is an excellent program. [alert admin]

Destroyer X 2.5 (Mac OS X)

Fairly Good...

This is probably one of the only File Shredding programs for Mac (at least the only one that's free), which is part of the reason I give it a decent rating. With all the scams and hackers out there today, it is important to make sure any important data is removed from your harddrive safley so it dosn't fall into the wrong hands. DestoryerX deletes everything by shredding the file which is a lot safer that just using the standard deleting methods. It has over four levels of sicurity to shred files with with an easy and friendly interface. All you really have to do is drag, point and click. The one downside is that it leaves behind the name of the file it last shredded which isn't that safe, even though the original file itself is gone. A good tip for this is to change the file name to something less inciminating before you get rid of it. In all a fair program. Although I'm sure it could be better. Looking forward to future updates.
