YummySoup! 1.6.5 (Mac OS X)

fun to use

I have used earlier versions of this for over a year. Yummy Soup is the menu app I use nowadays becuase it somehow taps into the fun of the internet menu scene. Look around online and if you like a recipe, probably its can be imported (with picture) by dragging the url onto the Yummy window. This update continues the well-advised emphasis on this key characteristic. Plus: easy full-screen view, smart lists (e.g., one for recipes not yet tried, one for recipes with eggs, etc.), shopping list. Whatever the future holds, mr or ms developer, please keep the fun in this one. [alert admin]

iCalMaker 1.9.1 (Mac OS X)

useful and now universal

This app is a real help. I use it to import event schedules that are sent as tables, for instance game schedules. It also offers some report formats not offered by iCal. Now in universal for os 10.4, I hope it will be soon updated for the upcoming 10.5. [alert admin]

LicenseKeeper 1.2.2 (Mac OS X)

good app

License Keeper fills a niche and does it well. I use it to hold not only registration codes but also the dmg files themselves and additional manuals or guides. The user interface is well thought out; add apps to your list by drag and drop. The auto detection of email serial numbers is neat. [alert admin]

Professor Fizzwizzle and the Molten Mystery 1.03 (Mac OS X)

Excellent

Our family is enjoying this Fizzwizzle as much as the earlier one, and that was a favorite of ours. It has several levels that lets each of us tackle puzzles at his or her level. Runs fine on an older G3, too. [alert admin]

Retrospect 6.1.126 (Mac OS X)

beware Retrospect startup item

After trying all manner of workarounds to address startup failures on a G4 with 10.4, I figured out that a Retrospect-installed item, called Retrorun, in startup items folder was the cause. After I removed that item, and for that matter removed everything associated with Retrospect, the problem was fixed. Who would have thought that the backup software was cause of failure?? Intego ContentBarrier X4 10.4.2 (Mac OS X)

best in class

I have settled on CB as an internet filter after trying some alternatives, and I am satisfied with it. A kid browser like Bumpercar is useless for an 11 year old; by that age they need to be using a proper browser for homework. KidsGoGoGo deserves to be considered seriously; it is ambitious; but it just did not feel solid. CB does feel solid. It generally blocks what one wishes to be blocked for the managed users. The manual is well presented. One suggestion I have for Intego is to allow itunes streaming while other streaming is blocked. iTunes has good parental controls of its own, and I would like to allow that app and not other streaming (like those little online videos). eyeHide 2.0 (Mac OS X)

not safe

I tried eyehide for a month. Being not satisfied, I removed it and the "hidden" folder. Result: lost video and corrupt directory. [alert admin]

disclabel 4.0 (Mac OS X)

good and getting better

While dsiclabel 3 was powerful, it could also be tricky, and taking steps out of order could lead to a crash. Now disclabel v 4 is a substantial improvement -- the new text window, for instance. [alert admin]

Ultralingua Spanish-English Translation Dictionary 6.0 (Mac OS X)

good companion to learning

I have been using Ultralingua along with a Spanish learning software (that lacks its own dictionary) for a month. It is completely satisfactory-- handier than the free online dictionaries -- it is worth its cost. Its window can float in front, and I tuck it into the corner of the screen, always ready to use. Results of searches are a good balance of info and brevity. The widget doesn't work at this time but is supposed to be fixed soon, according to prompt support response. [alert admin]
