LightZone 3.7 (Mac OS X)
I've been a user from the start. This version just crashes on launch. Downloaded it three times and same result every time. Very disappointing. And now I don't have 3.6 either. [alert admin]

Synchronize! Pro X 6.0.7 (Mac OS X)
I have been a Mac user for 25 years (yes, I started with the very first edition), and I've been a believer in bootable clones for as long as there's been software to do it. I've tried Carbon Copy Cloner and I have used SuperDuper and pretty well all the cloning software. Nothing is as good as SPX. Firstly, Qdea has the next version of its software ready almost immediately there's a new system or system update. This is crucial. Carbon Copy Cloner works until there's a system update and then it's useless until they get around to doing an update, which can take months and months. If you want to update your clone every week, as I do, CCC is of no use whatsoever. And the same comment can be made about most of the cloning software out there. SuperDuper is pretty good, but way, way slower than SPX. Secondly, the tech support from Qdea is very quick and very helpful. SPX costs more than the other cloners, but, in my view, if you're serious about having bootable clones always ready, the money is well worth spending. I've had several occasions where my clones saved the day in a big way. On holiday in Europe, my MacBook Pro was stolen from the hotel room. On another occasion, a brand new MacBook Pro had a failure of the logic board. In both cases, my little back-up drive with the bootable clone was not touched. I found another Mac and was up and running in five minutes. No data loss at all (in particular my Aperture library). In short, for real world serious use of bootable clones, you really can't beat SPX. And I should make clear that I have no other connection to Qdea than having been a very satisfied customer for years. A licence lasts for two years and I get any and all SPX updates and new versions during the two years after renewal. Then I keep using the latest version until Qdea comes out with another update or version, and I renew the licence to be able to take advantage of the software for another two years. [alert admin]

OnyX 1.8.0b3 (Mac OS X)
Just downloaded and tried 1.8.0b3, and it works like a charm. Earlier today, I had the script error problem with 1.8.0b2. I'm very impressed with the speed with which Titanium dealt with the problem. [alert admin]

Auto detection of frames is not ready yet! ![]()

I'm scanning some 4000 slides for digital editing, doing twelve at a time on an Epson Perfection 4870. After the prescan, I try the auto frame detection each time, but it never gets it right. Sometimes eight frames will have been detected and framed properly. Sometimes Silverfast simply puts one frame around twelve slides! I bought the update to 6.5 because of the new auto detection feature. I thought it would make my project easier. But this feature has been of very little help. [alert admin]

Synchronize! Pro X 5.0.6 (Mac OS X)
Just downloaded the new 5.0.6 and tried it on bootable back-ups to two drives. Worked perfectly. It looks like the 5.0.5 problems have been fixed. [alert admin]

I rely on SPX, and have used it for years for all my heavy bootable back-up work. I downloaded and installed 5.0.5 immediately and tried it on a MacPro to firewire drive back-up. It scanned the files quickly and then put up the copy screen and simply froze. Twice. I've had to re-install 5.0.4 until Qdea fixes it. Advice--do not throw away your 5.0.4 until you're satisfied that 5.0.5 works. [alert admin]

FoldersSynchronizer 3.5.2 (Mac OS X)
Using FS for bootable backup. Works very well. Had problem with first use and getting program to retain preference for "Run as Root", but Lorenzo solved problem very quickly by e-mail (delete FS preferences in User/Library/Preferences and all was sweetness and light). His attention to problems and his care for his customers really is as good as any software producer I've had occasion to deal with. [alert admin]

The interface is excellent. Never a hitch in over a year's regular use. Keeps my system humming. [alert admin]

REVISION I've been in touch with LightCraft Support and they gave me the advice I needed to correct the problem. It turns out that Safari Beta 4 was causing LZ to crash on launch. I uninstalled this beta version of Safari and reverted to 3.2.1, and the LightZone installation went without a hitch. I must commend LightCraft Support for their quick response.

Stuffit does this almost every time. Why do they announce new software before they are ready to deliver? Yet again, all we get is a link to the old edition.

I haven't yet been able to download 4.0.5. The Micromat server is busy. But I did use TTP4 on a back-up drive to remove the eDrives on two Powerbooks. On my G3Pismo (with a Daystar G4, 550mhz upgrade), the removal trashed the main partition and I had to erase all and transfer all data and system over from a new back-up. After the eDrive removal, even Disk Warrior said that the…

Smart move. I had a drive which worked perfectly. I tried Drive Genius. I ran the Rebuild function and it said that it couldn't repair the drive. And when DG was finished, the drive would not mount and nothing else would save it. I had to erase the drive and copy over from a perfect bootable back-up. Now I'm back in business and will not try DG again. …

I had the same experience on one of my Powerbooks, except that, after Drive Genius said that the drive couldn't be repaired, no other program could repair it and I had to erase the disk and do a reverse copy from a perfect bootable back-up copy of the now-destroyed disk. The reverse procedure worked like a charm and I'm beck to where I was---with a perfectly good disk that will not be subjected to…
