USB Overdrive 3.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Too many problems

I gave USB Overdrive another try, despite difficulties in the past, because others speak so highly of it. This time it worked exactly as intended. However, I soon realized that my volume keys and eject key no longer worked. After uninstalling USB Overdrive, my keyboard resumed acting normally. [alert admin]

SteerMouse 4.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Does all you'd expect

I've been dabbling with several replacements for Kensington's antiquated driver for the ExpertMouse. Steermouse is what I've settled upon, because it just works. [alert admin]

GlimmerBlocker 1.4.2 (Mac OS X)

This is my new ad blocker

I've used GlimmerBlocker off and on for a couple years, but was a loyal PithHelmet user, so I never switched until recently. GlimmerBlocker does not slow down Safari at all, which was the motivating factor in the switch. It hasn't caught as many ads as PH, but the offending ad sites can easily be added to GlimmerBlocker's black list. Adding sites is easy. [alert admin]

PithHelmet 3.0b1 (Mac OS X)

Giving up on PithHelmet

I've been using PithHelmet for years, even sticking with it when newer versions of Safari would make it stop working. The bottom line is that it gets rid of ads. The problem, though is that noticeable delay that PithHelmet causes. When browsing to a new page or opening a new page, there is a delay of several tenths of a second. This would not normally be something that I would notice, except when using Safari's new "Top Sites" feature. It seems that the delay is additive in Top Sites, and the delay would cause Safari to stall for several seconds to tens of seconds, which is totally unacceptable. As an experiment, I ditched PithHelmet, and now new sites display instantly, including Top Sites. For now, I'm using a different free ad blocker, and it seems to be running flawlessly with no delays. Export Address Book 1.5.1 (Mac OS X)

Handy Utility

I first purchased Export Address Book years ago, when Tiger would not export my data in the format I required. Since then, OS X has included that specific capability, but there are still times when I need my address book data for non-standard uses. For those times, Export Address Book saves the day. CleanMyMac 1.6.1 (Mac OS X)

Rip-off: Registration auto-expires

Even if after you pay the registration fee, the software stops working after six months. What you are purchasing is a six month license to use the software. This should be made clear BEFORE taking people's money. [alert admin]

Stationery Pack 2.0 (Mac OS X)

Expensive

I got this when it first came out, then I upgraded to version 2 for a lot more money. And very time there is a holiday or change of season, the company wants another twenty bucks for a few more forms. Personally, I use two or three of these every couple months, so it hasn't been very cost effective for me. Tonight I fired the software up again, and it's offering me another upgrade, but I have to pay. It also offers a "free" upgrade, but I never did figure out out to "enable" the upgrade. Bottom line? The registration process is so complex that I can't get a few bits of "free" stationery, and other upgrades are like buying the software all over again. But it's not a big deal, because I have the three pieces that I use, so I don't need a dozen new ones. [alert admin]

AppDelete 3.0 (Mac OS X)

Crashes consistently

Title says it all: it crashes every time after deleting files. Or... did it delete them? Or did it delete half of them? In what condition is my system after this software crashes half way through a cleanup? [alert admin]

Kensington MouseWorks 3.0r1 (Mac OS X)

Don't buy anything Kensington

MouseWorks has never worked satisfactorily under Leopard. Here we are in 2009, three years after the release of this version of MouseWorks. Apple has come out with a whole new operating system, Snow Leopard, yet Kensington is still stuck back in the days of Tiger. Clearly, Kensington has no interest in the Mac market. Their hardware will work, but only after you spend ANOTHER twenty bucks on third party drivers. If other developers can create software that will handle Kensington input devices, one would thing that Kensington could do the same, yet, they do not. Kensington should be ashamed for it's lack of support, and Mac users should seriously consider other options. [alert admin]

SteerMouse 3.9 (Mac OS X)

SWEET!

I'm kicking myself because this version has been out for a year and a half and it took me until today to find it. I've been using a Kensington Expert Mouse, which I love. The Kensington Mouseworks software, however, destroys some functionality of Leopard and has been a thorn in my side since the release of Leopard. Steermouse restores all the features of Leopard without the glitches of Mouseworks. My only complaint is that Steermouse doesn't handle chording of buttons. Perhaps in another version? [alert admin]

Yeah, it's a nice product. I used to use it, but after getting a taste of Alarm Clock PRO's added features, I popped for the registration fee.

You didn't (and still don't, most likely) have it setup properly

Thank you for your concern. I read your earlier comment, Micheal. I didn't want to engage in argument until I gave your software a fair shake, so I did not reply. I'm responding now because I stand by my previous two evaluations. Other potential users can read both of our comments and judge for themselves whether or not to use your software.
