SafariBookmarkChecker 1.30 (Mac OS X)

So close!

This app is so close to being perfect. In terms of checking the bookmarks to find whether they're valid, it does a beautiful job. For those having troubles with it reporting too many time outs or not found pages, I'd recommend adjusting the preferences. Move the top slider towards cool and the bottom slider toward a higher number. Unlike another similar app I was able to tweak these settings adequately to get excellent results. After that it falls apart a little. It's a little tedious and dangerous to go through the bookmarks it finds. First off, there's no undo! If you delete a bookmark accidentally, your only option is to close without saving and start over again. Second, there's not enough keyboard control. The app really needs the ability to move between bookmarks using the keyboard. A superfast shortcut to view the URLs would be nice too... I keep wanting to tap the right arrow key, like you can in NetNewsWire. Even better if I could also open the URLs in the background (again, like NetNewsWire)... This would allow me to go through the bad URLs very quickly. If it had those features I would gladly pay money for it! Throw in the ability to check for duplicate URLs and I'd pay even more. Bookdog 4.2.15 (Mac OS X)

Decent app with some frustrating issues...

My biggest problem with this app is that the URL-checking throttle does not go low enough. Even if I set it to 1 request per second, the requests start to pile up eventually and it turns into a mess. On the first run through it wasn't able to access two thirds of my bookmarks, even though most of them were fine. Even on its second run through, it still reported a ton of bookmarks incorrectly as broken. Testing them manually they can up fine, at the same address. Even worse, it floods my connection with so much traffic that attempting to do anything else online is pretty much futile. This is a high speed cable connection too, not even dial-up. Since I have so many bookmarks that forces me to run it overnight. My next biggest complaint is the interface. It is easily among the sloppiest I've ever seen. For a freeware app I can live with an ugly interface, but I've certainly never paid $20 for an app anywhere near this bad. Fortunately it doesn't get in the way of usability too often, but with more time spent on the interface it could definitely be easier and more enjoyable to use. Aside from those complaints I'm fairly impressed. It did an especially good job of finding duplicates and helping me determine which to delete. Checking the URLs it found as broken was much more frustrating because it was incorrect about so many of them. For each one I had to click the test button manually and let it load in my browser. A built-in browser could help alleviate this problem, by loading the page automatically right in the window. Shouldn't be too much trouble with WebKit. [alert admin]

FastIcns 3.0 (Mac OS X)

Works great, but...

This app works great, but it has easily the most unintuitive interface I've ever seen. Points for creativity, but a standard Mac-like interface would make it much faster and easier to use. If you can't bring yourself to ditch the cube interface, at least change the cursor used when dragging a file to it. I want to make an icon not a shortcut--I thought I was doing something wrong at first! The green + cursor would make much more sense. Aside from that, the app does work great. Thanks! [alert admin]

img2icns 0.4 (Mac OS X)

Simple, works

Nice little app. Dropped some TIFF files on it, and out came the ICNS files I needed. Worked better than Apple's own Icon Composer, which gave me some black dots in places they shouldn't have been. Thanks! [alert admin]

IconDroplet 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Exactly what I needed...

This app is a huge help for me. Apple's Icon Composer (include with Xcode Tools, which is included with every copy of OS X as a separate install) is great for making ICNS files, but there's no easy way to take those icons and paste them onto a folder or icon. This app fills in that gap perfectly. Works perfect in Tiger too. Before I was using Pic2Icon but this process creates higher quality icons. Thank you! [alert admin]

bbDEMUX 1.3.1 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Simple and useful

Unfortunately I wasn't able to drop a file onto the window, but I was able to open the same file through File > Open. Did exactly what I needed, even on a damaged video QuickTime couldn't open. Thank you! [alert admin]

StuffIt Deluxe 10.0.1 (Mac OS X)

It's not great, but it's the best we've got...

I've had my share of complaints as well, but the sad fact is, there's no suitable replacement for OS X if you need more advanced functions. Even if you're already using universal archive formats, which StuffIt handles pretty nicely. I've had a tough time just finding another, better app with the ability to open zip files, browse them, and edit them. And StuffIt's contextual menu is just invaluable if you're creating archives often. I won't offer a rating since I haven't upgraded to 10 yet. I'll be upgrading as soon as they release a Universal version that will work fully on my Intel Mac... I hate being without the contextual menu plugin! [alert admin]

iBiz 2.4 (Mac OS X)

Serious interface issue with the project notes section

I've been using iBiz for quite a while now, but I never did much with the Project Notes section. The other day I decided it was time to start. I typed in my notes and went about my business elsewhere. Now, suddenly, I find that all of my important notes are completely gone. Silly me... I didn't click the Change Notes button. This is a serious interface issue. No app should be so careless with the user's data. I was given no warning that my notes would simply be discarded. If you click on anything else, they are simply erased. Adding to the problem is the fact that, on any decent sized screen, the Change Notes button is a long way from the top of the text box, which means many people are likely to just not notice it at first. There isn't even a way to tell whether the notes have been saved or not, so I'm forced to click the button excessively if I want to be sure I don't lose anything. A couple of much more minor issues: - My list of clients always has a vertical scroll bar, even though the area is much taller than the list itself. I can get rid of it by changing the width of the Clients list, and then shrinking it back, but it comes back the next time I open the app. - You can delete Job Events with the keyboard's delete key, but not Projects or Clients. This is inconsistent, frustrating, and I see no good reason for it. [alert admin]

NewsFire 1.0 (v26) (Mac OS X)

A warning about NewsFire...

It will stop working completely after you launch it 50 times. Without warning. There is no indication this will ever happen (if there is one hidden somewhere it's far from obvious). It will not even let you access the Export Feeds option, really screwing you over if you have a lot of feeds saved (which I did, because I added a ton before the 25-feed limitation was added). Fortunately I had exported mine before it expired. I would not even call it shareware, as it claims to be here... Nagging and limitations are one thing, but when an app stops working entirely after a time, I'd call it a demo of commercial software. I also had some problems with authenticated feeds... It would bring up a dialog saying my password was wrong, and often quit shortly after (pretty much every time if I hit cancel). I expect software to be more stable when it goes out of beta and the developer starts charging for it. In this case the last free version was just as good as the last paid version I used... That's not encouraging. NewsFire the best looking newsreader out there, and it's (mostly) a pleasure to use, but it's not worth it. I would have paid under $10 gladly, maybe as much as $15... and possibly even $20 if I didn't feel like I was being deceived. I'll be taking my money elsewhere. [alert admin]

Memtest 4.04M (Mac OS X)

Great tool!

Ran it in single user mode to test all of my RAM and it worked great. Very easy to use so long as you follow the instructions, though some familiarity with the command line helps. My only suggestions, to make this easier for the less technically-inclined: - Package it better, either as an installer or a single package (.app), rather than just a confusing folder of files. - The documentation could be clearer. I'd include as-simple-as-possible step-by-step instructions first (including how to start in single user mode), with a separate section on advanced options. Put the release notes after the instructions. [alert admin]

Anyone Knows .... ?

I created my Save for Web Automator action as an alternative for resizing images and converting them to various web formats. See here for instructions on how to install it as a Finder plug-in, so you can access it from a contextual menu just like QuickImageCM. Of course it doesn't do everything QuickImageCM did, but it may help some people.

A small correction.

I just wanted to correct something in my review. I've found that you can in fact add an entire folder to the File Cabinet just by dragging it to the list from the Finder. You can't do it via the Add button though, which is very confusing. It was almost by accident that I discovered you could do it at all. Aside from my other comments, I am still very much appreciating this app. It has…

OK, Did not Delete all my Downloads!

Well I guess I spoke too soon. It had actually just reset the download locations from what I had changed them to previously. Once I realized that, I changed them back, restarted Poisoned, and everything is back how it was now. Still, potentially very frustrating.
