SyncDifferent 1.0 (Mac OS X)
gets stuck before sync even begins ![]()

I was really looking forward to trying SyncDifferent because it's much more user-friendly than SyncTwoFolders, which I've been using to backup to my external drive, and it allows you to save "favorites," which SyncTwoFolders does not. However, I can't get past what appears to be an initialization issue. I click the Sync button after selecting my two folders, and the app freezes for a good 60+ seconds before it starts working, and even then you can't click on the app's main window (bring it to the foreground) or any menus while it's running. It's too busy processing. It's also a CPU hog, eating up between 19% and 79% while running. Tried to sync twice, and both times the app got hung up on something minor (like a folder full of small jpegs less than 200k each). It stuck at 20.55% finished for a good 3 minutes, then (while I was writing this) suddenly it was done. I checked the log, and it showed there were errors, but didn't give enough information for a layman to investigate ("rsync error: some files could not be transferred (code 23) at /SourceCache/rsync/rsync-24.1/rsync/main.c"). Also, SyncDifferent failed to copy the icons for any Alias, and for many, many folders and documents. Developer: Check out SyncTwoFolders and borrow some elements, like the live log and the icons indicating errors within. Make that log sortable by these errors so users can track and fix problems. Looking forward to 1.1 and beyond. If these issues are fixed, I'll happily use, recommend and donate. [alert admin]

SyncTwoFolders 1.2.4 (Mac OS X)
app "not responding" when you try to sort log by response
Although the SyncTwoFolders log allows you to click on different columns to sort the results of your sync, it freezes when you try to do so — probably because there's so much data. I want to have my log displayed in order of the results of the sync, so I can group problem results together (like "error during the operation" and "source file older than target file" issues). Ideally, this could be set as the default sort in the log results. But currently if I try to click the "•" column to sort by results, SyncTwoFolders freezes up, and I have to force-quit without saving my log. If I don't sort by the results column, I have to scroll through thousands of actions searching for the errors reported. I had the same problem with 1.2.3, but if I just let SyncTwoFolders grind for 10 minutes or so, the log window WOULD eventually sort. But I let 1.2.4 grind for 40 minutes today and it was still not responding. [alert admin]

Seashore 0.1.9 (Mac OS X)

Seashore is one of the few PhotoShop alternatives that has all the features I need, and I've been very happy with it so far. I love, love, love the simple keystrokes for getting some or all of the palates out of the way. Tools seem more intuitive and easier to use than in my ancient copy of PS7. It may not have every bell and whistle, but it does everything I need. Only 2 problems so far: 1) Lassoing sometimes causes LONG spinning-beachball pauses. 2) If the last update was 11 months ago, I'm worried I've just fallen in love with abandonware. [alert admin]

STF has taken the hassle out of my weekly backups, which I used to do "by hand." The log is very helpful, and the app is almost idiot-proof. Looking toward future development: 1) It would be nice to be able to sync MORE than one set of folders. For example, I'd like to sync my Home folder and my Applications folder. This should be easier than letting one job finish, then having to select a different set of folders for the second operation. I should be able to have both jobs memorized by STF. 2) The symbol legend (•∆ø◊, etc.) should be integrated into the log window (or "freeze paned" at the top like you can do with a title row in Excel) so you don't have to have all these symbols memorized (or wait until it's done copying/scrolling) if you're watching the progress in the log and want to keep track of what's going on. 3) The mouse-over descriptions of Reciprocal, Source up Target and Source on Target could definitely be clearer. (Source on Target: "New files in the the Source folder will be added to the Target folder. Changed files in the Source folder will replace older versions in the Target folder. Files in the Target folder that do not appear in the Source folder will be erased.") 4) There is no 4. [alert admin]

SimpleViewer iPhoto Plugin 1.0 (Mac OS X)
As Apple heads toward Microsoft-dom, making software that doesn't allow much customization and that only plays nice with other Apple products (iPods, and in the case of iPhoto, snazzy web galleries that only work on .Mac sites), it's a beautiful thing to see plug-ins like SimpleViewer. It may not have all the functionality of the .Mac galleries, but the choices this tool lacks are mostly bells and whistles. The only shortcomings I can see having used it to create a few galleries: 1) In Simple Viewer galleries, it would be nice to have a "next" arrow on the last photo that loops back to the first. 2) In Postcard Viewer galleries, the page says you can navigate by spacebar and arrow keys, but that doesn't seem to work. 3) The one serious shortcoming: There's no way to choose the quality of the gallery photos. I'd like to offer visitors to my website the option of seeing high-quality versions of the photos, but the pix they get are small-file jpegs that don't do justice to really spectacular images. Having said that, however, SimpleViewer is how I'll be making all my web galleries now! [alert admin]

ImageWell 3.2.2 (Mac OS X)
Drop shadows don't seem to work
Stupidly, I chucked my previous versions, and I can't get the new, much less intuitive drop-shadow tools to add shadows to anything. Anybody get this feature to work? Anybody know where I can d/l previous versions. Stupidly, I chucked my 2.1.1 before I realized how much I didn't like v3. [alert admin]

mondo dock 1.2 (Mac OS X)
Cannot add new items to mondo dock
I'm not able to add new items to the Mondo Dock. I drag from the Finder, hit F12, drag onto the MondoDock, a little line shows up in the spot on the Mondo Dock where I'm trying to place the new item, let go, and... NOTHING. Also lost my saved sets when upgrading. [alert admin]

Doesn't show up in Palm's Home screens
Downloaded aTimer, uploaded it to my z22, and it doesn't show up in my Home screens. I can find it in the App menus (Info, Delete, etc.), but can't find its icon in order to USE it. [alert admin]

Found my problem - the Font palate wasn't wide enough to show the drop shadow tools I'm used to using. The developer's site could use a drop-shadow 411 in its online user manual.

Similar problem, but I didn't freeze - safari quit on me. Note: This was just after installing 1.6a1, so it was removing a LOT of cookies (1400+). When I relaunched, all my non-favorite cookies were gone, save two, which I had to remove with the single "remove" button, as the "remove all non-favorites" button was grayed out. (Still really happy to have even a test version for Safari 3!)

Multiple windows are the ONLY way I'd ever do email, and Eudora is the only program that still offers them without a damn folder tray on the side of each window. I keep my In box, my Out box, and any other box I'm working with open all at once. Plus Eudora is the only email app left that doesn't used the damn Drafts and Sent folders. Everything outgoing is in the Out box until I put…

I'm falling in love, but one big problem...
There doesn't appear to be a way to make a default layout. Whenever I make a new "collection," I have to manually format each one the way I like it (year, title, duration, director, actors). What a hassle. I'd also like to suggest that the run time (or duration, as you call it) be included in the "main" tab and be something that is downloaded with all the other movie info (it could take the place…
