Webbla 1.2.2 (Mac OS X)

Great GUI, but needs work!

The following feedback was sent to Celmaro on 1/1/2009: Happy New Year! So, I broke down and bought Webbla. If I'm being totally honest, I think it's a three star app at best, but I *LOVE* the GUI and really want to support your ongoing development. I have no doubt that it can and will mature into a five star product. I've made a number of suggestions in the past - and all of them stand. I want a better tag cloud. I want the ability to EXCLUDE bookmarks with certain tags via a command key (ie: shift click a tag to exclude). Collections don't interest me at all. I'd like the ability to toggle between the Collections and Tag views, or better yet, hide Collections altogether. But I've said all this before and I appreciate your listening. In the meantime, there are two, in my opinion, SERIOUS issues that need to be addressed: First, where is the trash? When I delete a bookmark, Webbla does not ask for confirmation, nor is there a trash where I can retrieve deleted bookmarks. This makes accidentally deleting a bookmark VERY easy. Please add trash functionality!!! Second, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE add some sort of "Activity Monitor" for when Webbla is processing bookmarks. I still have two bookmarks that Webbla can't process (I contacted you about this a few weeks ago). Webbla gets stuck and keeps bringing the main Webbla window to the front, even if I'm in another application and have Webbla minimized. This is REALLY ANNOYING and makes using Webbla nearly impossible. Furthermore, one of the web pages I have bookmarked (I can't figure out which one!) appears to play a sound when loaded. Webbla just repeats this sound over and over and over and over again. I have to mute my computer while Webbla is running because I can't figure out which bookmark is making the noise. Again, VERY ANNOYING!!!!!!! Webbla should NOT play sounds from a web page. I don't even understand why this happens. There's absolutely no point to it. Webbla NEEDS to do a better job of letting the user know what it is doing and allow the user to cancel certain actions. If Webbla gets "stuck" processing a bookmark, there should be some indication of WHICH bookmark is the problem. And the audio thing is just plain irritating. If I can't figure out which bookmark is causing this problem, I can't really use Webbla because I'm not willing to mute my computer for the sake of a bookmark manager. Thanks for listening. Best wishes and must success in 2009! [alert admin]

Things 0.9.6 (Mac OS X)

It's ok

Things sure has quite a following! Personally I'm impressed, but hardly blown away. The UI is nice - vastly superior to other GTD apps - but there are definitely some missing and half-baked features (um, Teams...). My biggest gripe is the iPhone app. Pretty much a joke at $9.99. I feel totally ripped off. The iPhone app's feature set is severely restricted and syncing is totally boneheaded. There's no way to trigger a sync! One has to quit and restart the app every time one wants to sync - and even then it never worked for me. :( If you're serious about a GTD app, especially one that integrates *seamlessly* with your iPhone, OmniFocus is your only choice. The GUI pales in comparison to Things, but the feature set blows it out of the water. I sincerely hope that Things evolves into a more full-featured application. Right now the lack of good iPhone integration is the deal-breaker for me. I see no compelling reason to use Things over OmniFocus. While the Things UI is obviously better, OmniFocus is the better app for people who are *serious* about Getting Things Done! That said, I look forward to the 1.0 release of Things and hope that the iPhone client will mature into something actually useful --- instead of a $10 rip-off. [alert admin]

1Password 2.9.2 (Mac OS X)

Forget the web service and fix the wallet!!!

Can't the new Agile Keychain format be used to sync? The web service seems a bit redundant and, quite honestly, not a good use of your time. Running any kind of "service" is a lot of work and requires a great deal of resources. I'd rather see you guys focus on making 1Password even better, not spread yourselves too thin trying to keep a web-based service up and running.

Frankly, I'd like to see you focus on the Wallet. 1Password would be a 5 star app if only the wallet weren't so clunky. Now that you have mobile versions of 1Password, the wallet is even more important! The current UI is weak; it's hard to organize wallet items; importing is still half-baked at best. I could go on and on.

I really wish I could import the hundreds of license keys, etc. that I have stored in another app. That app lets me export to a text file with no problem, but 1Password still won't let me import and map the fields. How hard is this???

Wallet organization is pretty weak. Creating new wallet items is clunky. The xCode-style drop-down sheet when creating a new wallet item is, well, pretty lame especially when compared to Apple's elegant Pages-style template chooser.

In my mind, the wallet should be your #1 priority for the next major release of 1Password. I personally won't be paying for a 1Password upgrade until the wallet is up to snuff. Don't get me wrong. 1Password rocks. I love it. But it's really time to fix the wallet. [alert admin]

Webbla 1.0.3 (Mac OS X)

Getting better

I'm still not willing to pay $15 for a bookmark manager that can't add bookmarks from one's browser. Sorry. That said, I'm very happy to see the addition of a tag cloud for searching. It's not nearly as nice as Yep's tag cloud, but it will do. Add the ability to bookmark from within the browser AND specify bookmark tags when adding, and I'll gladly pay for it! The UI is very slick. I really like the thumbnail icon view. Very nice! The gray-on-gray bookmark info area is a bit hard to read, though. I'd also like the ability to show more bookmarks and less of the top bookmark info area. The note area is HUGE. Does anyone really need this much space to make notes about a bookmark??? Personally, I'd rather see the top bookmark notes area and the info area consolidated into a right-side inspector pane so that one can use the full window for viewing bookmark icons. Again, see Yep. Finally, I'm probably never going to use Collections. I'd like the ability to hide them so that I only browse by tag. The ability to switch between Collections and Tags in the left-side source pane would be really nice. Again, see Yep. It's looking good. At this point, I give it 3 stars. Webbla definitely has the potential to be a five star app. It just needs a bit more work to get there... [alert admin]

RipIt 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Why not stick with MTR?

Not to bag on this product, because I haven't used it, but why pay $20 for this when I can get MacTheRipper? Or Handbrake - for free? What does RipIt do that these don't? Nothing, from what I can tell. Furthermore, looking at some of the discs causing problems for RipIt, I can say that MTR fixed these problems (Ice Age, for example) more than a year ago, maybe two. I rip with MTR, then batch process conversion to MP4 with Handbrake. MTR works like a charm, has a ton of "expert" features, but is simple enough for anyone to use. And it works. Always. Webbla 1.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Needs better browser integration and tag UI

Unless I'm missing something, is there no way to add a bookmark from Safari other than drag and drop? Not that I'm complaining about drag and drop, but I want to specify tags, etc. when I add the bookmark. Otherwise, I have to drag and drop, switch to Webbla, find the bookmark, add the tags, etc. Not very efficient... Also, I'm most interested in Webbla for being able to tag my bookmarks and organize them that way. The absence of a tag browser (see Ironic Software's Yep) really makes tagging a half-baked feature. And it's not just Webbla. It seems that so many software makers implement tags, but fail to provide a good search UI. Instead, we're stuck creating "Smart" folders, which is grossly inefficient compared to a tag browser like Yep offers. Overall, I like Webbla a lot, but until it offers better browser integration (Webbla menu bar item???) and a better way to find tagged bookmarks, I won't be buying. [alert admin]

Schreiben 3.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Looks interesting, but...

...is there a reason the Leopard demo won't work on a 10.5.2 Intel system (iMac Core2 Duo)? Every time I try to launch the demo, I get an error telling me that the app cannot run on "this version of MacOS X." Looks interesting. I'd like to check it out. [alert admin]

Flock 1.2b (Mac OS X)

Do we REALLY need another browser?

Seriously? Do we really need ANOTHER browser? I've tried them all and still come back to Safari and Camino. Why? They're reliable! Sure, Flock promises some interesting features, but every time I've tried it, it's been so buggy that I've given up in no time. Same goes for most of the OS X browsers out there. Safari is pretty rock solid and performs very well. If I ever have a problem with a site, Camino usually handles it. Enough said. [alert admin]

Agreed

I feel much the same way. I've wanted to embrace Things because of its very elegant UI. OmniFocus, on the other hand, could have been written by M$. Yet I bought OmniFocus and keep downloading each new version of Things hoping that it might finally be the right app for me. At this point, I've given up on that idea and decided to stick with OmniFocus. It's not that I don't like…

Been there, done that

I've submitted feature requests in the past regarding data entry. They obviously didn't resonate with the developer. That said, the data entry problems are OBVIOUS to anyone but the developer it seems. Oh well.

Agreed!

I've tried PowerMail a few times over the years and it's always been a buggy mess. The UI is incredibly primitive and feels very out of place next to "modern" OS X apps. Apple Mail is pretty good and there are numerous other mail client choices. I can't figure out why anyone would spend $5, much less $50, on PowerMail.

Who the hell is leading this project?

Ok, so you're complaining about what appears to be (downloading now...) a phenomenal update because they have separate Intel and PPC binaries and because DVD decryption is gone? Seriously??? Separate binaries are great. I don't have a PPC box, so why do I want all that extra code on my hard drive? And there may well be strong technical reasons for this decision. But it's such a NON-ISSUE in the first place. As…

another day, another update

And why, exactly, is that a bad thing? I'd be happy with daily updates to any app - if those updates fix problems. No one's making you install them.

Still too many shortcomings

BINGO!!! I, too, have tried to like this app. Several times. On the surface it looks good and some of the functionality (ie: iPhone support) is VERY nice. But entering information is an exercise in frustration and reconciliation is just plain bizarre. No matter how many times I try iBank (and other assorted OS X finance managers), I always come running back to Quicken. It may not be ideal, but at least it…

Yep !

I was just going to suggest the same thing! Yep is phenomenal!!! Hands down my favorite third party OS X app. Nothing touches it for PDF management. Not even close. And if you need more than PDF support, check out Yep's (arguably more complicated) sibling, Leap. www.ironicsoftware.com

Why is this version getting 5 starts in VT Summary

Pretty easy. One person rated 7.7 five stars, hence the five star rating for 7.7. Versiontracker isn't encouraging or, for that matter, discouraging, anyone from upgrading. It's just reflecting the ratings users have given iTunes.

Worthless review

Another worthless review. Seriously, what's up with the whining. What do you want iTunes to do that it doesn't do? So, maybe you don't like the store, etc. Fine. Don't use it. But how does beefing up the storefront aspect of iTunes take away from it being a great jukebox application?

Not as good as it claims to be

Question...why do you want AVI anyway? Why not just use H.264/MP4 and get better compression, iPod/iPhone/AppleTV compatibility, etc??? That said, there are plugins that allow AVI to play just fine in Quicktime. I still have no idea why you'd want AVI, but it's very easy to get that working. I do agree with some of your comments re: VH, though. I much prefer HandBrake as well and have had no issues with…
