Webbla 1.0.3 (Mac OS X)
I'm still not willing to pay $15 for a bookmark manager that can't add bookmarks from one's browser. Sorry. That said, I'm very happy to see the addition of a tag cloud for searching. It's not nearly as nice as Yep's tag cloud, but it will do. Add the ability to bookmark from within the browser AND specify bookmark tags when adding, and I'll gladly pay for it! The UI is very slick. I really like the thumbnail icon view. Very nice! The gray-on-gray bookmark info area is a bit hard to read, though. I'd also like the ability to show more bookmarks and less of the top bookmark info area. The note area is HUGE. Does anyone really need this much space to make notes about a bookmark??? Personally, I'd rather see the top bookmark notes area and the info area consolidated into a right-side inspector pane so that one can use the full window for viewing bookmark icons. Again, see Yep. Finally, I'm probably never going to use Collections. I'd like the ability to hide them so that I only browse by tag. The ability to switch between Collections and Tags in the left-side source pane would be really nice. Again, see Yep. It's looking good. At this point, I give it 3 stars. Webbla definitely has the potential to be a five star app. It just needs a bit more work to get there... [alert admin]

RipIt 1.0 (Mac OS X)
Not to bag on this product, because I haven't used it, but why pay $20 for this when I can get MacTheRipper? Or Handbrake - for free? What does RipIt do that these don't? Nothing, from what I can tell. Furthermore, looking at some of the discs causing problems for RipIt, I can say that MTR fixed these problems (Ice Age, for example) more than a year ago, maybe two. I rip with MTR, then batch process conversion to MP4 with Handbrake. MTR works like a charm, has a ton of "expert" features, but is simple enough for anyone to use. And it works. Always. Webbla 1.0.2 (Mac OS X)
Needs better browser integration and tag UI
Unless I'm missing something, is there no way to add a bookmark from Safari other than drag and drop? Not that I'm complaining about drag and drop, but I want to specify tags, etc. when I add the bookmark. Otherwise, I have to drag and drop, switch to Webbla, find the bookmark, add the tags, etc. Not very efficient... Also, I'm most interested in Webbla for being able to tag my bookmarks and organize them that way. The absence of a tag browser (see Ironic Software's Yep) really makes tagging a half-baked feature. And it's not just Webbla. It seems that so many software makers implement tags, but fail to provide a good search UI. Instead, we're stuck creating "Smart" folders, which is grossly inefficient compared to a tag browser like Yep offers. Overall, I like Webbla a lot, but until it offers better browser integration (Webbla menu bar item???) and a better way to find tagged bookmarks, I won't be buying. [alert admin]

Schreiben 3.0.1 (Mac OS X)
...is there a reason the Leopard demo won't work on a 10.5.2 Intel system (iMac Core2 Duo)? Every time I try to launch the demo, I get an error telling me that the app cannot run on "this version of MacOS X." Looks interesting. I'd like to check it out. [alert admin]

Great features...but the UI gives me a serious headache! I can't deal with something that cluttered. Sorry. [alert admin]

Flock 1.2b (Mac OS X)
Do we REALLY need another browser?
Seriously? Do we really need ANOTHER browser? I've tried them all and still come back to Safari and Camino. Why? They're reliable! Sure, Flock promises some interesting features, but every time I've tried it, it's been so buggy that I've given up in no time. Same goes for most of the OS X browsers out there. Safari is pretty rock solid and performs very well. If I ever have a problem with a site, Camino usually handles it. Enough said. [alert admin]

Shoebox 1.7.2 (Mac OS X)
Nice UI, some great ideas at work. Unfortunately, it's about as stable as quicksand. Not to be trusted! And, despite having been around for several years, it doesn't get better. Me thinks the developer needs a little Cocoa refresher... [alert admin]

iBank 3.1 (Mac OS X)
I don't understand the developer's resistance to addressing data entry. The current approach is slow and error-prone. How many people need to complain about it before something is done? Were it not for the abysmal data entry UI, I'd probably buy iBank. [alert admin]

1Password 2.5.13 (Mac OS X)
Definitely the best password manager for OS X. That said, I'm not a huge fan of the UI. It's good, not great. It lacks the "modern" OS X/Leopard look and feel, especially in the source pane. Adding wallet items is a bit clunky. I'm not a big fan of the ProjectBuilder/Xcode-style drop down that appears. Too many disclosure triangles to open to find what you want. I think a Pages-style template chooser would be much more efficient. I'd also like to be able to view different types of wallet items (ie: all software licenses) easily. Right now, the wallet is a bit of a catch-all. Importing is very difficult unless 1Password specifically supports a particular file type or program. How about a generic importer for text files? Let the user decide how to map the fields. I'd love to migrate all of the software licenses and other info I have stored in another program. Unfortunately, 1Password won't let me - which keeps me from fully utilizing it (I'm not re-typing several hundred entries). I've suggested a three-pane interface to the developers: source pane -> results list -> data view. While very friendly and responsive, I don't think they much care for the idea. Pity, because I think it would make the program far more visually appealing and simpler to use. But that's just me. I'd be happy with some improvements to the Wallet and importing. It's still a good program and definitely a step above the Keychain, but not quite five stars yet... [alert admin]

I was just going to suggest the same thing! Yep is phenomenal!!! Hands down my favorite third party OS X app. Nothing touches it for PDF management. Not even close. And if you need more than PDF support, check out Yep's (arguably more complicated) sibling, Leap. www.ironicsoftware.com

Why is this version getting 5 starts in VT Summary
Pretty easy. One person rated 7.7 five stars, hence the five star rating for 7.7. Versiontracker isn't encouraging or, for that matter, discouraging, anyone from upgrading. It's just reflecting the ratings users have given iTunes.

Another worthless review. Seriously, what's up with the whining. What do you want iTunes to do that it doesn't do? So, maybe you don't like the store, etc. Fine. Don't use it. But how does beefing up the storefront aspect of iTunes take away from it being a great jukebox application?

Not as good as it claims to be
Question...why do you want AVI anyway? Why not just use H.264/MP4 and get better compression, iPod/iPhone/AppleTV compatibility, etc??? That said, there are plugins that allow AVI to play just fine in Quicktime. I still have no idea why you'd want AVI, but it's very easy to get that working. I do agree with some of your comments re: VH, though. I much prefer HandBrake as well and have had no issues with…

I haven't upgraded yet. If 10.5.3 is *required*, why does VT say 10.5? That implies 10.5 or later.

Don't believe the trash talk? Pointing out that a piece of software is hopelessly buggy and has been from day one isn't trash talk. It's reality. That's the point of these reviews. If something's good, people praise it. If it's a buggy mess, well, maybe the developers should fix the problems???

While I respect the developer's right to set whatever price he thinks is fair, $35 is pretty pricey for an application like this. I don't think the developers are doing themselves any favors by setting a higher price. I got 1Password as part of a MacHeist (I think) bundle. Although I like it, I wouldn't come close to paying $35 for it. If the upgrade price to the next version is…

Data Guardian is not listed as a support file format when importing. The problem with 1Password is, the developers don't think we're smart enough to map our own fields. I exchanged a few emails with them about this. I've got most of my software license keys in Steel. It very nicely exports a text file. This file can contain just one category (ie: software licenses) or all categories (ie: licenses,…

I've been using Quicken for years and never have a problem reconciling. With iBank, I've never reconciled successfully. The reconcile UI is rather odd, too. Don't get me wrong. I'd like to see an alternative to Quicken, but this isn't it. iBank's got glitz to spare, but when it comes down to functions, I don't find it very intuitive, nor easy to use. Data entry is the biggest problem for me.…
