One Finger Snap 1.4 (Mac OS X)

A slightly irritated paying customer.

The software works well. I feel a bit put out that I paid for it and now the developer has decided to give it away for free. [alert admin]

pdfselect 2.1 (Mac OS X)

Not quite ready for release.

Product requirements should mention the need for a modern TDS-style TeX installation including the pdfpages package, as well as OS X 10.4. The VersionTracker download link doesn't work properly - the data downloads as a Web page instead of a file (Firefox 1.5.0.9). The file's available via the developer's site without trouble. The supplied help has not allowed me to set up my Mac in order to try out this software, so I've been unable to discover if it works. The setup program meant to help with this uses a fixed size window that puts controls off the bottom of a 1024x768 monitor screen. I suspect that the software functions, but I have so far been able to put it to the test. It needs proper documentation and a bit more development. [alert admin]

NotLight 1.4 (Mac OS X)

Not so good

This might well be an excellent application, but it's a bit hard to figure out exactly how to use it intelligently from the supplied documentation. A request to the author for help with figuring this out resulted in a rather bad-tempered response. Just so people know. [alert admin]

Tiger Cache Cleaner 3.1.4 (Mac OS X)

Avoid this rip off

Save your money: there are many freeware utilities such as MainMenu which do the same jobs but with fewer bugs, greater ease of use, and better support than this rip-off. I paid the full fee for this and got left without working software. Every time a new major MacOS update comes out, the author of this software drops support for earlier versions of his software and releases a new one for which he expects all his customers to pay a full fee for. Support is dropped for the old version (this has been the case since MacOS X 10.2 and Jaguar Cache Cleaner). I found this out after buying Panther Cache Cleaner (tcc's precursor) only to be left without software that didn't work. What happened was Apple released 10.4 before the 10.3.9 update came out. The author updated Panther Cache Cleaner (pcc) to work with 10.4, called it Tiger Cache Cleaner (tcc), and dropped support for the software I'd just paid for. Then Apple released the MacOS X 10.3.9 update. This meant that pcc failed to work and existing pcc users were expected to pay a new full fee (not even a reduced price upgrade route) for tcc if they wanted to continue to use the functions they'd already paid for. I asked the author of pcc/tcc about this, as a paying customer, and he ignored me. Tiger Cache Cleaner is a pure rip-off and the business tactics used by its author is illegal in the EU where I live: software firms are required to support software for a reasonable time in the EU. I found out that there are free applications that do everything that pcc/tcc can do. MainMenu in particular works much better than pcc/tcc, the author is friendly, and he fixes problems very quickly. For example, rebuild LS database didn't work properly in either pcc or MainMenu - the function only checked the boot volume in both cases. MainMenu's author fixed the problem quickly when I told him about it. The author of pcc/tcc - software *I had purchased* - ignored the problem when I, a paying customer, reported it to him. iPodVolumeBooster 1.0 (Mac OS X)

100dB will send you deaf.

Be warned: even 100dB (which is pretty damned loud) will damage your hearing quickly. If you use this hack and *exceed* what is already a dangerous sound pressure level for the sort of time you'd listen to music for, you'll go deaf. Search the Web and find out about the details. [alert admin]

MPlayer OS X 1.0pre8rc4 (Mac OS X)

MPlayer and 10.3.9 - Just Doesn't Work.

That's it: I downloaded the archive file, unpacked it, double-clicked the MPlayer application icon, and nothing happened. No life at all. Trashed my existing MPlayer prefs, still no joy. The readmes suggest compiling the application as the best way to get a working version of MPlayer. [alert admin]

Tiger Cache Cleaner 3.0.5 (Mac OS X)

Rip-off price, poor function, and poor support. Use MainMenu instead.

Tiger Cache Cleaner 3.0.3 (Mac OS X)

Paid the fee, and got left without working software

I paid the full fee for Panther Cache Cleaner (PCC) - the precursor to Tiger Cache Cleaner (TCC). When TCC came out, the author dropped support for PCC. OS X 10.3 was then updated to 10.3.9. PCC does not run on 10.3.9. When I emailed the author about this problem, he completely ignored me - and I am a paying customer. There is no upgrade path for PCC licence payers to move to TCC: we are expected to pay a full new licence fee. This was his policy for the change from Jaguar Cache Cleaner to Panther Cache Cleaner too. MainMenu does most of what I need, and it's freeware. Both TCC and MainMenu get the rebuild LS database function wrong (all Mac utils I've tried fail to rebuild the LS database successfully). The following works on my Mac: /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user /Volumes/ (MainMenu might well be fixed soon - I've emailed what I know about the issue to its author) [alert admin]

herbicide and pesticide... whoa !

"i don't think versiontracker should be promoting any product that says that endangering the health of people and animals and poisoning the earth is ok." Don't you think you'd better start by getting all the games involving war and dangerous driving etc., banned first? I'm a hippy and I eat organic wholefood as much as practical (yes I wear sandals and ride a bike too); I also happen to know that organic food production rules permit some…

Works Well

I wonder if Mac 1984 is the author of TCC? Certainly, his reports are very positive and bear no relation at all to the experience I've had with this software and its author. Smells like lying to boost sales to me.

Still the Most Reliable

The other utilities to do these jobs are *free* and much better supported. The suggestion that this is the best priced such utility is a lie.

It's only 9 clams!

Stopping whining about a software author who uses despicable (and illegal in my part of the world, AFAIK) tactics to rip off his customers is a dis-service to the software using community - so I ain't gonna stop whining until people stop trying to make out that this rip-off merchant's software is worth paying for.

Paid the fee, and got left without working software

That command line should have been: /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/ LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user /Volumes/* (with an asterisk on the end)
