Intego VirusBarrier X5 10.5.10 (Mac OS X)

Warning: do not purchase or upgrade

I bought this program as part of a bundle from Intego. They claimed it was compatible with Snow Leopard. It is NOT. It slowed my System operations by 500% and often forced applications either to hang (beach ball spinning) or crash. If you choose the "constant protection" option, it examines every application, web link, and e-mail very slowly before letting the process run. That is redundant and unintelligent protection. When I complained and asked for my money back, the company refused. As far as I'm concerned, the offer is a scam and the software worthless. And it's NOT compatible with Snow Leopard, despite their claim that it is. Be warned!! [alert admin]

Internet Cleanup 5.0.4 (Mac OS X)

Try the Download Button?

You're all complaining about no trial version, yet in the upper right corner of this page is a Download button. Someone ought to see if it's a working demo before complaining so much. [alert admin]

pearLyrics 0.3 (Mac OS X)

Outstanding for lyric searches

I've tried several lyric-search apps and widgets, and pearLyrics is the best so far. It finds lyrics quickly, you copy them to the clipboard with one click, and then paste them where you want--for me, it's Kara Tunes, which also has Google and Lyrictracker search buttons. 8 out of 10 times, pearLyrics finds the lyrics. Of course, it helps to keep the artist and tune title correctly spelled! [alert admin]

VueScan 8.0.7 (Mac OS X)

Upgrade problems?

I could not get 8.0.6 to recognize my ScanJet 5300c. Worked fine with 8.0.5, but suddenly No Go. Directions now say not to plug the scanner into a USB hub. But again, that worked fine before. Also, I thought that a buyer was entitled to free upgrades forever. What's this about a shrinking time limit? [alert admin]

Hog Bay Notebook 3.01 (Mac OS X)

A great product getting better!

When we encounter change in life, it's always a challenge to the learning circuits: do we advance along this new trail or look fondly back at the beaten path? I've been a computer user since 1978, and every time a new interface comes along, I hear a chorus of agonized dissent about "my old favorite" app or system rise and fall. The Mac platform rouses more of this noise because its loyalists are fierce devotees and they also see more rapid changes than users of Windows, which evolves at a glacial pace. To the nay-sayers here about HBN 3, I say....come ON, where's your pioneer Mac spirit? Some of us like to see new light bulbs installed, others want to stand around and praise the old dead one. HBN is a fantastic tool and it's only gotten better. You should play around with the new outlining service and other features before complaining so much. And if you just can't bear to evolve, then use version 2 as long as you wish. It's not going to break. Me, I am delighted with version 3 because it's become such a complete writer's tool: I can grab bits of text from the Web, organize them in HBN, and then begin to create an outline of what I want to write. Combined with DevonThink and DevonAgent, HBN 3 is a giant step forward, and I hope the developer keeps working to stay well ahead of us all. And to him I say, never fear, there will always be NEW customers who don't need to cling to System 9 and its Apple menu. Onward! [alert admin]

Spamfire 1.4.5 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Build a good Address Book

An easy way to deter spam is to write a Rule for your Address Book, whether in Entourage or Apple Mail. Make the Rule say: (1) accept only mail from senders in my Address Book, and (2) throw everything else in Trash. You may quickly review Trash to see if anyone legit got tossed. If they are frequent correspondents, click on their address, and save the v-card to your Address Book. Then (o happy day) delete permanently the spam messages. This will not stop them from reaching you, but you don't have to read anything but the headers (Select All and Trash), they won't get any cookies back from you, and in my experience, eventually the amount of spam declines. Pyramid 1.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Promising, but.....

Pyramid looks like a poor man's Inspiration. It allows you to make text containers of two shapes (ovals and braces) and add lines that connect various topics. It's extremely compact and saves files as normal documents; you may also export as RFT (it corrects you if you try to save as TXT or DOC). I found the demo version so limited that it's very hard to tell how useful the program may be. You cannot have more than 2 worksheets open or a total of 15 items.....when I created 4 items, several annoying dialogs popped up, warning me of the limit. This early version (1.02) may be a little buggy still. In following the demo directions, I found that some of the objects did not behave as described: I made a new text box and dragged it toward one already created. Lines are supposed to appear, suggesting relationships, but that didn't happen. Some folks may find the $29 price a bit steep for what you get. Inspiration runs $69 for educators. I wish the demo were more flexible to allow me to decide if this program really is a help for writers. [alert admin]

EndNote 6.0.2 (Mac OS X)

I asked EndNote…

Tech Support how to install this update and what is it for. They confirmed that you have to remove 6.0.1, reinstall 6.0, and then run the 6.0.2 updater. Before you do that, make sure you are a medical researcher, because the update mainly fixes connection to the PubMed database. Here is the explanation from EndNote: "The 6.0.2 update is for the PubMed connection search within Endnote. PubMed made changes to their servers. Because of these changes we had to create an update. If you do not search PubMed, you don't need to install the 6.0.2 update. However, if you do search PubMed, we highly recommend that you install the 6.0.2 update." [alert admin]

eMessage Archiver 3.07 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

If you have…

any trouble with eMA, its developer, John Carlsen, will help you out. He endlessly improves eMA, churning out updates and asking for feedback. The faster your machine, the faster eMA works. No other e-mail archive works on such a wide variety of applications. I have evolved from CMS Mail to Eudora, Outlook Express, and Entourage, and eMA has archived it all in a uniform FMP database. For 15 bucks you will not find a better or more versatile e-mail archiver. Thanks, John! [alert admin]

Storyist integrates word processing and database management.

Storyist is not a new product. It's a direct steal from Scrivener, which is licensed and copyright-protected software from Literature and Latte, a small company in England. Scrivener has a two-year lead on Storyist. It's also $35.00 for software you may install on up to five machines. Storyist wants you to pay $60 for a rip that simply copies many of the Scrivener icons and concepts, such as the Corkboard. Please do not support pirating.…

Causes many weird problems

I fully agree! I also did a complete rebuild after the updating, but now some new problems have arisen. In Entourage, I can no longer find or use my local Directory Services for addresses, and there's no way to delete the bloated "On My Computer" handle that shows up on the Move menu. May finally be time for me to move my e-mail to the Apple Mail.app....

Help!

Just export your data as a GED file. Reunion will import it quickly and re-map it as needed. You may also import any GED files that you find on the Internet.

Nice App, too bad it's impossible to license!!

I am having similar trouble: have all the correct info in for registration, and the server keeps reporting "Credit Card Declined." It's a Visa Check Card and there's plenty of money in the account. I agree that Kagi or PayPal would be an easy, safe way to register. Also, they accept American Express, my preferred method of payment. I have sent two e-mails and there's no response from the company. I read that their chief designer just…

Another Reconsideration...

First you trash the software, then you praise it, then you say you will never pay for it, and then you send good wishes to the developer! I cannot imagine that you have a very long friend list in this world. To David: many of us DO pay and we thank you for the constant updates.

Safari is totally unstable.

You may transfer bookmarks easily from Safari to Firefox (and to 10 other browsers) by using URL Manager Pro <http://www.url-manager.com>. My biggest complaint about Safari 1.2.4 is that pop-up ads are getting through, although I have the block-ads preference checked. Have sent numberous bug messages to Apple, but of course no response.

What is your Entourage backup strategy?

Here are my suggestions: 1. Keep your Inbox small. At 100 messages, transfer 50 of them to Sent Mail. 2. Ditto with Sent Mail. Archive mail in dated Entourage folders. I break down 2003 to 6 folders: 01-02, 03-04, etc for Jan-Feb, Mar-Apr, etc. For some special projects, I keep separate folders, but it's easier for me to find e-mail when it's stored in chronological order. (I do this with paper files, also.) 3. On a regular basis,…
