Metronome 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Pretty nice... (4.5 stars)

After 20 years of playing the bass, I'm finally taking up drums so I've been downloading and sampling as many metronomes, drum machines and beat generators as I can for the Mac.

This app is simple, it works, and being able to change the tempo via -/+ keys is really convenient. Being able to select customized accent sounds is nice, as is the incremental stepping preference.

I deducted one star because ony my PB G4/1.5, the tempo will stutter or fluctuate if I have a lot of processes going on, ie, have GoLive and Photoshop and three browsers running on my 512MB of ram. Granted, that's really not the app's fault, but in real world situations I could potentially have iTunes, GarageBand and a few other apps running alongside the metronome. To be honest, I only notice the stuttering when I switched apps, and I'm sure it wouldn't happen on my G5 or on a duo core intel.

I'm tempted to request a slew of options like support for odd meters, etc, but that would lead to featuritis/bloat and probably not the scope of this clean little app. Still, I quite haven't found the perfect metronome/beat box combo that features a metronome with easy programming that supports meter/tempo changes, etc.

Nice work, and this app is now part of my home drum studio.

Homebrew Formulator 2.5 (Mac OS X)

Finally -- pro-level brewing app for the Mac!

Finally -- I don't have to use ProMash in VirtualPC any more! Homebrew Formulator is incredibly comprehensive, from helping you formulate your recipe to developing a mash and boil schedule. All the fermentables, yeast (white labs, wyeast and safle) and hops you could possibly hope for are all here. This app handles complex water chemistry (sulfites, carbonates, magnesium, etc) and decoction mashes, so this isn't just a simple recipe formulator. I can't believe such a full-featured professional app is free. Kudos to developer. Prost! [alert admin]

Ophiuchus 0.3.1.2 (Mac OS X)

Definitely old school

Would be nice to at least have a GUI... running this from the terminal will probably eliminate 90%+ of Mac gamers out there. Interesting concept, though. [alert admin]

GTN(Guess The Number) 2.3 (Mac OS X)

Good start...

Not bad... functional, and does what it says. Gets pretty addictive when there's some time to burn and bored with the rest of the games on my hard drive. Could use more options and eye candy. Good start, though! [alert admin]

Acquisition 114.1 (Mac OS X)

If you don't like the nag notices...

Then either register the app or don't use it at all. This is the only app in my 13 years as a Mac user that I've ever registered. It's awesome, and blows away anything similar like Limewire, etc. [alert admin]

OmniWeb 5.0 (Mac OS X)

A vast improvement!

I remember when OmniWeb was the only viable browser. Since them, it seems like every browser under the sun has bested OW in terms of features and speed. When Safari was released, I thought I'd never use OmniWeb again. Thi has been the first release of OW that actually feels *usable*. Ugly toolbar, beautiful rendering, and speeds that almost match Safari. I'm holding out, but this final version is very, very close. [alert admin]

Ocean Waves 0.8 (Mac OS X)

Good start

Could use some more variety, especially in simulating the sound of water crashing against rocks, rippling pools, etc. Overall, sounds pretty good but is too 'uniform' to sound realistic. Nice stereo effect. Great options for starting/stopping sound. [alert admin]

Shiira 0.9.2.2 (Mac OS X)

Very, very promising!

Wow -- this could seriously give Safari a run for the money. From my limited time with it, seems very mature and stable with more options than Safari. I'm tempted to give this a full 5 star, but something may rear its ugly head after some prolonged use. Still, I'm definitely keeping Shiira around. [alert admin]

Age of Mythology 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)

One of the best RTS games for the Mac

Yes, AoM was crash prone on my dual G5 2.0/9600, but this update has fixed the problem. A great game, and I hope the expansion pack gets ported to the Mac. [alert admin]
