Intego ContentBarrier X5 10.5.4 (Mac OS X)

Don't trust X5

I've been using CB since version 3. It worked as advertised - blocked the sites I wanted blocked. I have a small issue with X4 on my son's PPC using most of the CPU cycles, but killing the process and restarting usually fixed that. When X5 came out I bought it immediately. They cleaned up the gui. Unfortunately, they also killed the ability to handle network clients (users with their home directory on another machine). This made the product completely unusable for me because my kids all have network accounts. I called tech support and their response was that they never "officially" supported network accounts. I finally got hold of a marketing person and tried stressing how important that feature was. I did get a refund. I've tried every new update since X5 came out and they still don't support network clients reliably. I discovered in my test of 10.5.4 that a PPC iMac wasn't blocking anything. I uninstalled and reinstalled twice and still couldn't get it to function properly. I don't trust X5 and will be sticking with X4 for the foreseeable future. [alert admin]

MenuCalendarClock for iCal 3.1 (Mac OS X)

Simple Calendar to unneeded App

I don't understand the thinking - but they've now taken a handy, simple, menu item and made an app out of it. I've gone back to 3.0.6 until this is fixed. [alert admin]

Default Folder X 4.0 (Mac OS X)

Comment on recent posts

I have been checking Unsanity's website (creator of the previously mentioned "VERY DANGEROUS APE") and they are quite explicit in saying that APE is NOT compatible with 10.5 and will not LOAD on 10.5 machines. I then checked my /Library/Frameworks directory, found the APE framework, deleted it and rebooted. Default Folder is STILL working. From this I conclude that DF v4 is NOT using this APE. Second, the list of "approved" developers is ONE person's opinion - nothing more, nothing less. My references: compatibility page http://unsanity.com/products/compatibility/ Weblog - look at the October post for info on APE http://unsanity.org/ [alert admin]

Default Folder X 4.0 (Mac OS X)

A great timesaver

I started using DF over 10 years ago. I've upgraded every time there was an upgrade - including v4.0. I find this to be a GREAT timesaver and the time it's saved me is well worth the price I've paid for this over the years. Now with DF incorporating QuickLook into an open dialog box I can see this being an even more useful utility (and I'll bet Apple will incorporate this is 10.6 - sorry Jon).

Whether DF uses some APE or not doesn't matter to me - DF saves time. Has DF crashed? Yes! Over 10 years it's crashed perhaps a dozen times. I can live with that. The few times I've had problems - a quick email to Jon and he's on top of it - usually having a fix available within a week. For my money, you can't ask for better service.

Parallels Desktop 3.0 Build 4128.0 (Mac OS X)

Horrible customer support

I ordered the upgrade with 1 year mx via a call to customer support over 2 weeks ago. I was told that I'd receive a confirmation email within 24-48 hours. I called back 3 days later after not getting any confirmation and was told they were swamped and I'd be getting a notice shortly. I called again Tues (12 June) and was told my order would be "express" processed. I called back today (15 June) and cancelled the entire order. I guarantee that VMWare will not have customer service issues. Service this bad doesn't deserve anyone's support. Reviewing the product. I think v3.0 is the most unstable version since the early betas. I've had it crash on me on three occasions while trying to upgrade the tools. [alert admin]

AirTrafficControl 2.0.1b400 (Mac OS X)

Please bring back the throughput numbers

I used the 1.2 widget for seeing what the throughput is on my wireless connection. Unfortunately this seems to be missing from the new beta. PLEASE BRING IT BACK. Otherwise this is a great and handy little widget. [alert admin]

iPartition 1.5.7 (Mac OS X)

Exactly what I was looking for

I've repartitioned 3 disks with this app and all have been smooth - set it up and walk away. It's exactly what I was needing to repartion my lowly 60 G HD on my iBook. I first tried DiskStudio but found that app to be clumsy, slow, and inconsistent. I wish I'd tried iPartition first. [alert admin]

VersionTracker Pro 4.1 (Mac OS X)

Frustration

Version 4.1 is more thorough than previous versions but it crashes on half my computers (4 out of 8) so I've had to revert back to v3.5 on them. It's been this way and was reported months ago.

The other frustration is that it doesn't recognize most Omni Group apps - OmniOutliner, Graffle and Web don't even show up in the list of installed apps.

VersionTracker Pro 4.1 (Mac OS X)

Watch out for diminishing services

This is more of a comment on the service that is VT Pro than the app itself. Last year I bought this service and it was good for 5 computers. I bought another license this year through .Mac and didn't notice that the new version is only good for 3 computers. The 3 computer version costs $49.99. There's a 10 computer package for $79.99, so I asked how much it would cost to upgrade. You'd think $30 right? How about $64 to upgrade. I sent a note to the VT folks three days ago complaining about this - still haven't heard back from them. [alert admin]

Why not an alert...

For every simpleton who states that the President is sending anyone to die. They are being sent to fight and unfortunately some will die. Or we could have another alert for every comment about this fight being for oil. If this was about oil there'd be an US flag over Kuwait City right now because the Kuwaitis were in NO position to put up a fight after the first gulf war. Yet we left their…
