Enigmo 2 1.0.6 (Mac OS X)

Great Game

I got this game during a promotion for $10, which was a steal. Other reviewers have hi-lighted the major points already, but I wanted to contribute my 5 stars. It's a great game with stunning graphics. The user interface takes a little while to get used to, but 3-D object manipulation tends to be that way. And while the included levels are fun, the downloadable levels others have created are what really makes it all worthwhile, so make sure to check them out. Better still, make your own levels and submit them to Pangea for others to play. I just wish there were more independent game developers putting out software of this quality. [alert admin]

Fairies 1.4b (Mac OS X)

Pretty lame

If you liked Bejeweled 2, then you might like this game. If you didn't like Bejeweled, you will hate this game. Personally, I think its really boring. Its very similar in style to Bejeweled (you might even say a rip-off of Bejeweled), but with the flaws magnified. Specifically, that once you get past the fifteenth level or so, luck plays a much bigger role than skill in advancing. If you happen to make a few moves that produce huge combos (as in more than ten successive reactions, which you can't possibly predict since most of the pieces will come from off screen), then you beat the level. So generally you do the same level over and over again until you happen to get good combos. I didn't play earlier versions, which were supposedly terribly buggy. This version never crashed on me, but does have bugs (e.g. the "mystery" bonus often doesn't work if you win it during the middle of a combo, which is more often than not). The only thing the game has going for it is the eye-candy. The graphics look good for a game that doesn't require much in the way of system resources, but that unfortunately doesn't make up for poor gameplay. Also, the music gets really annoying fast, as does the breathy pseudo-british voice-over. And finally, at $5 the game would be somewhat disappointing. Expecting $20 for this game is absurd. sixtyforce 0.8.5 (Mac OS X)

First Impressions...

I've been playing with Mupen64 and SixtyForce today to see how feasible it would be to play Ocarina of Time on my Powerbook (12" 1.67 GHz, OS 10.4.8, 1.25 GB ram). While things have improved dramatically since tried about a year ago, unless you have a newer faster machine, there is still a ways to go before it becomes enjoyable. Mupen64 seems slightly faster than SixtyForce, but both are jerky on my machine, which makes the audio essentially unlistenable. Mupen supports more ROMs (e.g. Master Quest wouldn't get past the profile creation screen on SixtyForce), but Ocarina of Time seems to display the same glitches under both emulators. The deal breaker for me is that Mupen doesn't yet support USB gamepads. Navigating with arrow keys just doesn't do it for me. SixtyForce has a few more options on how you can configure the level of detail, some of which are buggy at this point, but with all the bells and whistles turned on, Ocarina is absolutely gorgeous, albeit unplayably slow. I'm not putting a star-rating at this point, as it seems a bit unfair to rate the software this early in its development. Both look like they will be great emulators given another 6 to 12 months of development. If I get a new Intel iMac in that time, I might try it again to see how much the extra horsepower makes a difference. Much thanks to the developers for all their efforts. [alert admin]

Slow as grunt

I have been playing this game on a Dual 2.3 GHz G5 with a ATI Radeon X850 XT and...its pathetically slow. I think you could play the PC version in emulation and it would be about the same speed, and more reliable. Its a fun game, but Aspyr has A LOT of optimizing to do before I would consider buying the game. [alert admin]

Bits on Wheels 1.0 PR1.2 (Mac OS X)

so far beyond awesome

far and away the best torrent app ive seen on any platform. cant wait to see a final product. primary request i have is that the file chart behave consistently with the rest of OS X, i.e. same resize functionality and sort by clicking on the top of the column. [alert admin]
