Memoires 1.1.40 (Mac OS X)
Another good journaling alternative
Since other journal alternatives are being mentioned, I’d like to suggest people look at ViJournal by SkoobySoft. I've been using it for a couple years and would hate to be without it. I’ve never tried Memoires, but from what I read here it doesn’t seem to have the flexibility of ViJournal and costs more as well. Of course tastes vary. That’s one reason I tend to prefer ViJournal for any sort of journaling over the highly-touted MacJournal, which I also own. [alert admin]

MacNote3 1.1 (Mac OS X)
I've been using MacNote 3 for several months now and I find it quite useful, stable, easy to learn and easy to use. I recommend people download it and try it out for the 30-day period. The current downloads, by the way, include manuals in both Japanese and English, so the language problem no longer gets in the way. Well, except when you visit the web site, which is still pretty much in Japanese. But given how well the app works, this shouldn't be necessary anyway. At $15 I think it's a bargain! [alert admin]

A year ago I wrote that: "I purchased myNotes almost as a kind of stop-gap rather than to be anything significant. But its convenience for note taking and snippet storing (including BIG snippets) has been terrific, as has its ability to handle RTFD nicely. . . Overall, then, a small program that does what it says it will and does it quite well." All that continues to be true; I wouldn't be without myNotes. Ray [alert admin]

Listz 1.2.0 (Mac OS X)
DCAttorney commented about Listz' "depth." Thanks for the word: I've been looking for the right word to describe this aspect of Listz. Other words come to mind, such as power, flexibility, robustness, and charm. "Charm"? Yep. Along with its other attributes, its power, flexibility, robustness, and so forth, Listz is a visual treat which the user can shape to his/her own tastes. It's actually fun to play with, even though its charm has very practical applications within its Lists. (Incidentally, I rated its Ease of Use at four stars rather than five chiefly because, although it's very easy to get started with, its depth does take a bit of time to understand fully.) I've been beta-testing Listz for months, and as time goes by I find it more and more useful. As I said in a review of an early beta, it has found a central place on my desktop and I would be a bit lost without it. If you have any doubts or questions about Listz, look it over. If your experience is at all like mine, you will be captivated by its combination of power, flexibility and charm. (Incidentally, I am not affiliated with Robochanz in any way except that I have corresponded with them over time about the various betas.) [alert admin]

I've been using Listz through a number of beta versions now, and have corresponded frequently with its developers. I was excited about the application quite a while back, and I'm extremely pleased with how it has matured. I see that it is still labeled a “beta,“ so I want to comment that in all the time I've been using it, even in its earlier betas, I have never lost data because of beta glitches. In fact Listz has long since assumed a central position on my Mac, the reference point where my computing day starts in the morning, where it ends at night, a place where all kinds of data are collected, stored, manipulated, and distributed. Along with its considerable utility, Listz has turned out to be fun to use and has a visual appeal that is inviting and rare. This ”beta” strikes me as a promise of more good things to come. I am very enthusiastic about Listz (in case you couldn’t tell) and I encourage you to download it, play with it, put it to work, and explore its charms, which are many. Use it as a demo, and if you have questions that the QuickStart list doesn’t answer, then email the creators, who are very gracious and responsive to questions and suggestions. [alert admin]

Listz 0.9.17 (Mac OS X)
I just downloaded this a few days ago and became immediately fascinated with it. I have found Listz, even as a beta, to be stable and flexible, with some very handy tricks up its sleeve, and fun to play around with as well. It has already become a standard part of my computer environment. I encourage people to download it and explore it for a few days. By the way, the developers have been amazingly responsive to several emails I have sent them with observations and suggestions. I'm sold on these guys and their program. [alert admin]

iProtector 1.1 (Mac OS X)
It seems to work without a problem ![]()

I got annoyed at the inappropriate one-star rating and decided to download and try the app myself. It works, at least in the 128 bit configuration, the only one available in the demo mode. You enter a password and then drag and drop one or more files onto the iProtector window. From there it's a one click operation (two if you want to get rid of the unencrypted copy of the files being encrypted) and you're there: encrypted files. Unencrypting is the same process in reverse. There is little in the way of instruction, so there's a bit of guesswork involved. Nothing brain-numbing, however. And I think there should be a requirement to enter the password twice to make sure you don't accidentally mis-type and thereby lose your encrytped file forever. But it works, and for only ten dollars it's worth a look. (By the way: I'm always nervous about trying encryption programs, and until I can really trust it I always keep an unencrypted copy tucked away somewhere. Just in case. Nothing wrong with a little electro-paranoia, right?) My four rating is partly to indicate the above, and partly to offset the meaningless one rating. (I would probably want to give it a three-plus rating otherwise.) RayCee [alert admin]

Amigos Spanish 2.1 (Mac OS X)
I agree with kfenwick all the way down the line. I've also had some email contact with the developer, whose responses were quick, friendly, and helpful. I strongly recommend that you download the demo and check it out. I did, and I bought almost immediately. (You might also download the Amigos Puzzles, a new release for the Mac, and a bargain, especially when bought with Amigos.) [alert admin]

myNotes 1.2.1 (Mac OS X)
I purchased myNotes almost as a kind of stop-gap rather than to be anything significant. But its convenience for note taking and snippet storing (including BIG snippets) has been terrific, as has its ability to handle RTFD nicely. To my own surprise, I've abandoned iClip, which is itself pretty handy, in favor of myNotes. Overall, then, a small program that does what it says it will and does it quite well. Truckstopboy's one-star rating is so far off the mark — apparently a comment on his irritation rather than on the software — that I wanted to add this review [alert admin]

No problem: Just click the little pencil in the upper right corner and you're good to go. (I suspect it's arranged that way to prevent accidental changes.)

It's too bad you couldn't open it on your Mac. That experience always frustrates me. Reporting the problem here is helpful, especially reporting it to the developers (which I hope you did). But giving it a star rating when you haven't actually tried it out [since you couldn't open it] seems misleading to me.

Just thought I would comment that I have had no problem using iSticky on my Intel iMac. So I suggest that readers not be scared off; it's worth a download and test drive.

So, let's see: you're annoyed because the app doesn't "honour CSS styling of reply form widgets" so the entire app rates only two stars? Are you rating the application or expressing your irritation? I've used OmniWeb for a long time now, and I have yet to find a good reason to trade its strengths and virtues for those of any other browser. (But I certainly recognize that many others will not see it my way.) Seeing…

This strikes me as a largely incoherent polemic against something or other. Possibly against the software itself. Maybe. Still, it's hard to understand what the one star rating really refers to. Possibly the writer's moral or ethical stance? Or his notion of what's practical? Or. . . ? Please, if you're going to use the star ratings, rate the software, and not your moral outrage (or whatever).

Sorry about your problem. Just for the record, I've been using OmniWeb for quite a long time and found it to be quite stable. I'm using an intel iMac and a G4 iBook, both with OSX 10.4.7 (don't yet trust 10.4.8) and I've had no stability problems at any point in the 10.4.x progression. Of course, YMMV. . .

Unfortunately this kind of review probably says more about the reviewer — or at least about the mood he or she is in — than it does about the software being reviewed. I've been using SuperNotecard with none of these complaints. It's been stable and, overall, satisfying to use.

For a different take, I've had very good luck with Notes, and I wouldn't be without it. I wonder if you have checked Chronosnet's web site? They have a very active forum there, with considerable help available.

Version 5.0.5 had numerous bugs, but the 5.1 beta sequence has been greatly improved, is readily available for download. Try it; you'll like it. As for no support — that is simply false. Apparently the writer hasn't bothered to use the SOHO forum. I have, since the buggy early versions, and have been impressed with the level of support Chronosnet has offered. The fact is, they rushed Organizer and Notes to market before it was…
