Capture Me 1.4.1 (Mac OS X)
the image capture is nice and simple, but the movie capture needs work. on a G5 with plenty of RAM, capturing a Quartz Composition at 640x480 and 320x240, 30fps, turned out files that appeared to be 20fps, 4200kBps and 3500kBps, respectively, but never played more than 7 or 8fps.
too bad, otherwise it's very simple and nice to use. i look forward to future versions. [alert admin]

Belkin UPS Bulldog 3.0.6 (Mac OS X)
mediocre software, mediocre UPS ![]()

well, it does most of the things you'd expect UPS software to do. i use a Smart-UPS 1500VA with a G5, LCD, and OS 10.4.6.
first off, the hardware leaves something to be desired. if you lose power and the battery totally depletes... IT DOES NOT POWER UP WHEN POWER IS RESTORED. wow. just... wow. i'm also having some issues with it detecting the battery levels properly: if i yank the cord to test it, the reported level will drop quickly, then fluctuate between roughly 10% and 40%. i know my G5 2.5DP is a power hog, but this should handle it.
the software's interface is clunky. buttons are unlabeled and lack tooltips, the prefs windows are laid out strangely ("Exit" button midway down the right side?!).
the documentation is labeled for the OS 10.3 version, and does not have a change log.
the software has a small fraction of the functionality of the Windows version. that's pretty pathetic, in my book. go ahead, look at the Win version's manual: SNMP support, e-mail warnings, better graphs and loggins, a gazillion more actions...
the logging and warnings are obnoxious: do i really have to be constantly reminded that the power is gone? i think the incessant beeping lets me know, thanks - and, no, the software buzzer disable doesn't always work. sometimes the software likes to run multiple instances of Bulldog.app - wtf?
the installer is stupid. i've seen Bulldog.app "lose" preferences: you set something, like changing the low battery level, click OK and reopen the box and... just kidding, fooled you! the installer PUTS THE WRONG PERMISSIONS ON THINGS - that's a big throbbing check in the "don't know jack about Mac" column. check the permissions of all the files in the Bulldog folder! owner should be the main user, R+W, group should be admin R+W.
what's the bottom line? it's moderately better than the Energy Saver panel's controls, and, dejected and defeated, i'll keep using it unless i buy a different brand. if you happen to be a Belkin dev, it would be even nicer if everything worked closer to the Win version. the only advantages over Energy Saver: more displayed info; more flexible shutdown and warning options; logging; and the part that makes it really, really better than Energy Saver is the ability to run scripts on shutdown. however, that's hardly a saving grace.
i don't know what the hell people do when they have a critical Mac server that needs a battery backup, but i think they'd be pretty screwed. Belkin has a lot of work to do, and could profit by trumpeting better Mac support. [alert admin]

Xkeys 1.1.1 (Mac OS X)
so, i guess i'm a dirty liar. or i just jump to conclusions.
Xkeys DOES work under 10.4. pretty much just as it did before, which is fantastic and exactly what i want it to do. the problem relates to not being able to use F14/Scroll Lock and F15/Pause without modifiers on my PS/2 keyboard via a USB adapter. dunno why, but HotApp does the same thing. hope there's a way around...
i suppose i have a couple of issues, then:
- Apple-any Fkey makes Fkey Listener crash, regardless of something being bound to it. "OutOfBoundsException" - can't find a crash log.
- could be a little more robust. i love the feature set, but one thing that i'd like is to at least emulate all of the bezel-friendly Apple "special" keys: volume and eject, and perhaps brightness and contrast (never use them, though). anyone know how to do that in AppleScript?
otherwise, i love it as usual! [alert admin]

Mail Fixer 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)
clean and simple, and the default theme isn't too shabby... however, if i use the default theme and install buttons and icons, it'll hang on the installer barber's pole bar but will quit fine. when i open mail.app, the buttons and icons are there, but the icons have a blue stripe down the middle of them. restore also hangs, but is fine if i quit the app and reopen mail.app. if i don't install the icons but do install the square buttons, it does not hang and executes just fine. it looks good with the square buttons and default icons. HotApp 1.9 (Mac OS X)
...except without modifiers it won't respond to F14/Scroll Lock and F15/Pause on my IBM Model M with a PS/2-USB converter (F13/PrintScrn works). which is exactly what i downloaded this for: mapping those specific keys to the volume controls. but KUDOS for tapping in to the volume controls with bezel feedback. this app looks really great, and seems to be just what i'm looking for to wrangle my keyboard since Xkeys is kaput under 10.4 (and my apple pro keyboard is kaput under ginger beer). Tofu 1.3.3 (Mac OS X)
this is wonderful for readability, as it maximizes the aspect ratios of standard computer resolutions. smooth scrolling to the columns is very, very nice. the perfect thing for reading long, dry, military reports converted to text by Italian bloggers.
sugestions:
- a problem: an opened document will have part of the first and second columns blank. select all or a window refresh will fix it
- let me print (and hence save to PDF) by selecting fixed numbers of columns (and rows?) per page.
- make a browser that lets me view a page in columns (that might be asking too much)

Prefling 2.1 (Mac OS X)
pretty darn nice. i miss having pop-up folders with the control panels in OS9, so anything that lets me compact navigability in to a single dock icon is very, very welcome. it's a simple replacement for having System Preferences.app in the dock: the .app dock icon has a popup menu of the prefpanes, but only when the app is open. and since closing the window closes the app... yeah.
one request, however, is to have the option to mimic System Preferences.app by opening the "Show All" prefpanes view with a single click and control/right-clicking for the popup menu. still, though, the option to do it, as this would be a little annoying for the one-button mice among us. Xkeys 1.1.1 (Mac OS X)
fantastic utility. doesn't work in tiger.
this is a great, GREAT utility that worked well (occasional quits) up to 10.3.9. it does NOT work in Tiger 10.4 (8A428), sadly. i still have use for it, and i hope the author will update this. in case you don't know what it does, it lets you launch applications, folders, or applescripts with f-keys or combinations thereof. it can also bring up a menu of options, which is how i used it. F14 would bring up a menu with some utility programs that i use often enough to not want to dig for them, but not so often i want to use space on the dock. calculator, toast, etc would live in there, and on F14 i also had a script to eject my iPod, so F14+F14 would eject it as i'm getting stuff ready for school. cmonnnnn, 10.4 compatibility! PowerChute is a complete waste of time & space
incidentally, the Belkin Bulldog app is pretty crappy, too. the bottom line is that OS X UPS support sucks.
