Dali Clock 2.25 (Mac OS X)

Brilliant, and nostalgic

As per Docbaron's comments, it's great to see this back on the Mac. And as the author says "it's gone full circle". And it's not 1 app, it's 3 (screensaver / widget / Palm) plus the program itself. AND this is free. I'm giving it 5 stars as I share the same misgivings about how VT calculates the overall score. [alert admin]

Sharpshooter 0.3 (Mac OS X)

PITY!! ......

.... it's a terrific idea. Installed on a Mac Mini G4 PPC with OS10.4.10. After 4 screenshot captures the app kicked in, and worked fine, but the first 3? Nothing happened. To the developer - keep at it. I will happily pay a modest shareware fee when this is fully functional. [alert admin]

Desktop Transporter 2.5 (Mac OS X)

Teleport

I use Teleport http://abyssoft.com/software/teleport/ which has been developed by an Apple Inc. programmer, I recall. It's free and works for me on my LAN. Maybe I am missing something, but I od not see what Desktop Transporter does for $30 that Teleport does for nowt. If the developer would like to come back on that with some distinct advantages I would certainly give the app a go. Effective shareware apps are one oif the best reasons for using a Mac, so come on Developer, give us your sales pitch versus Teleport! [alert admin]

Carbon Copy Cloner 2.3 (Mac OS X)

RTFM !!

Works perfectly. Take your time children, before flaming the developers, supporters, and forum contributors - RTFM!! Do not be upset by developers that provide great donation-ware who get upset by dorks, posting stupid questions, after it's not working for you. When all else fails - Read The Fabulous (insert any other F-word as you wish) Manual. Basic reading and comprehension skills are a pre-requiste when reading about utilties that access your operating system. This is a great piece of Mac community software. [alert admin]

Intego Personal Backup X4 10.4.6.2 (Mac OS X)

Caveat Emptor (Buyer Beware)!

As far as I am concerned Intego stinks. Worthless products at over-inflated prices. I bought Intego Virus Barrier - great "Gucci" interface! - when first upgrading from OS9 to OSX. Macs prior to OSX did get viruses, that's why I bought it. One year later, without a single OSX virus being intercepted, I declined the (expensive) offer to renew the subscription for virus updates. Many years later, still no Mac OSX viruses other than proof of concept that Apple squashed pretty damned quickly! Then I went (FOOL!) for Net Barrier. Even more "Gucci" interfaces. The product did absoluteley nothing that OSX does not already handle with its own Firewall. All I had to do was enable Firewall in System Prefs. Dohh! Once bitten twice shy. Twice bitten, and Intego can stick this application where the sun does not shine. I will stick with File Synchronization. http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/16975 [alert admin]

Apple Security Update 2007-001 (Mac OS X)

Installed without a hitch

I long ago adopted the policy of partitioning my HD with 2 bootable volumes. Whenever an update comes along to OSX I install onto the back-up volume first. with Repair Permissions before and after. Today was no exception, and the update was fine on the back-up volume. I also checked the CPU usage, no issues there. So, conclusion = safe to update the default start-up volume. Next I repeated the process on the primary drive. Again no problems. I feel sorry for those with difficulties, but regular permissions repairs are a life-saver. [alert admin]

AddressMatrix 1.0b2 (Mac OS X)

Why?

The Royal Mail Postcode finder is free to use, for up to 20 searches per day. http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/postcodefinder If you need more than 20 a day, then it is likely that you are pulling down addresses for direct mail or telecanvassing purposes. For that you need a clean list that conforms with strict rules about not including people who have registered with the TPS and MPS opt-out registers. Contravene that and you face a fine of £5,000. I'd like to hear from the author what his/her justification is for this chargeable service. I am certain that zip codes can alos be retrieved fro free in the USA. [alert admin]

teleport pr4 (Mac OS X)

Stunningly good ......

..... application. I endorse everything that cyberspread wrote. However ...... ..... stunningly bad documentation. It took me 2 hours to get this going. But then WOW! All it needs is a step by step detailed user manual, not the shorthand notes currently provided. e.g. 1. Machine A only talks to machine B when they are actaully touching one another in the window in the Prefs Pane GUI. For AGES I tried dragging the icon of the other machine into the top left corner thinking that that was the 'hot-spot' only to find that it did not want to go there. 2. After that, it took a re-start on both of my machines to get this thing to fly*. And then .... VIOLA! Brilliant. * My inter-machine link is via a firewire cable. Not sure if that makes a difference, but it may. Conclusion - go for it, and (perhaps) ** pay the author a tip-ware fee when the documentation is up to scratch. ** Is it true the author works for Apple, webdaddy? Rgds [alert admin]

Trivia Machine 1.0 (Mac OS X)

USA only

This program appears to be elegantly coded, BUT, it's horribly slow to load and the questions are USA-centric. Living in the UK, this is not for me. There is a world beyond Baltimore. I don't like leaving poor feedback as I subscribe to the notion that the Mac community is well served by some excellent developers, and as stated, this appears to be good coding. But it would be nice if the minority 200 million US citizens would recognise that the total market is vastly larger. [alert admin]

UNINSTALL OLD VERSION FIRST!

Thanks for the tip. I was amazed at the number of permission errors that needed correcting after the install. Have tested this update after permissions repair and it runs as sweet as a nut. Also, the flaky behaviour whereby the viewing window disappears depending on the scroll bar position seems to have been fixed.
