ZopeEditManager 0.9.7 (Mac OS X)

A little more explanation

For those who know Zope but are not familiar with this.. If you install the ExternalEditor product on your Zope server, then when you're browsing through your Zope system, in addition to being able to edit the files through your browser, you get a little pencil icon beside the objects, which is a link to a .zem file representing that page and how to edit it. If you click on it, your browser will download the .zem file. This program understands those .zem files and can use it to grab the file from the server, and pass it to an editor of your choice. (TextMate, in my case). It also monitors the local copy so that whenever you hit save in your editor, it copies it back up to the server. This is very cute. If you use Safari as your browser, it will just download the .zem file and you'll need to double-click it to get it into ZopeEditManager. If you use Firefox (and some other browsers), you can configure it to open .zem files automatically in ZopeEditManager so it really is as if you're editing the remote file in your local editor with a single click. I've only done a quick trial, but so far it seems to work nicely. [alert admin]

Transmit 3.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Lovely

One of my favourite Mac apps. The new DockSend and 'Link Folder Navigaion' features in v3 are great. [alert admin]

DiskWarrior 3.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Saved us!

I was trying to help a friend recover his home directory this morning. It had got lost, and fsck was reporting an 'invalid extent entry' that it could do nothing about.

We bought and downloaded this on my machine, put his in target disk mode and mounted it on mine as an external drive, and DiskWarrior found and fixed his directory. Your mileage may vary, but for us it was worth every cent of the $80. [alert admin]

Intellisys Project Desktop X 2.5 (Mac OS X)

unintuitive but powerful

I agree with previous feedback suggesting that this is a very counter-intuitive user interface. I really dislike it for that. And it's a little bit buggy. And it's not cheap. But despite this, I do think this is the best of the bunch. The facilities for automatic scheduling and the flexibility of mapping resources onto tasks are great, and I haven't seen the like in FastTrack, PMX or any of the others I keep trying in the hope of finding something similarly powerful. Some key things I want from a tool like this is that it will stop me from allocating a task to somebody who isn't available, let me enter different working times and vacations for different people, attempt to schedule things automatically for me, and allow me some flexibility in allocating tasks to resources ('This could be done by either John or Bob') I haven't found anything else on the Mac that will do this. iSVN 0.8.2 (Mac OS X)

Early days

This freely admits to being incomplete alpha software, but it's looking quite good. We're badly in need of user-friendly SVN clients on the Mac, and svnX has never seemed very intuitive to me. I hope the author keeps working on this - it has potential [alert admin]

ClamXav 0.9.0f (Mac OS X)

Filenames too

I removed the space from my quarantine folder name, but I notice that many of my files still get the 'No such file or directory' message when trying to quarantine. I think spaces (and perhaps other characters) in the filenames also cause problems. Many thanks for a nice app! [alert admin]

Ulysses 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Interesting license

I agree this if very cute. I agree that it's also overpriced. But it's also interesting that the site says it's a "3-Computer Multiple-user license". So if you have a friend or two who might also use it, it starts to look more reasonable. [alert admin]

Command line tool

The real limitation with this is for scripts etc that need to know when you've finished editing the file, so they can carry on. Anyone got a good solution for this with SEE?

Re: "Bloat"

Peter - This is a good point. But my concern about 'bloat' was more about complexity and ease of use (ie. how many preference options a single app can have before it becomes too hard to navigate) than it was with processor/memory resources. Quentin
