CPUMenu 1.1 (Mac OS X)

ok in leopard

the venerable cee pee you haxie is still broken. so, i just loaded this on my macbook running 10.5.2. seems ok so far. it loaded automatically in english for me... the screenshot shows it in french. the only negative is that it's hogging about twice the menubar space that the display requires. btw, you can delete it by cmnd dragging it off the menu bar. Shomi 2.0.3 (Mac OS X)

great but not in leopard

i use this constantly in tiger but the contextual menu doesn't work in leopard :-( some of the functionality is available in leopard's quick look but shomi is still the champ. [alert admin]

was the best, but now there's a better way...

to do this: <http://paulstamatiou.com/2006/06/11/how-to-display-date-in-os-x-menu-bar/> i've used wclock forever and liked it, especially the popup calendar. menucalendar clock is just nagware. so i stuck to wclock which is simple, even elegant. but with tiger and no updates,it's showing it's age. you can no longer position it where you want in the menubar and it's a terrible memory hog. follow the instructions at the link above for using the international system preferences to fix the menubar issue. you can use either a dashboard widget or the date and time preference pane for a quick calendar [alert admin]

Perian 0.5 (Mac OS X)

nice try, but doesn't play well with others

it did work on some, but not all msoft mpeg4 v2 files i tried. however it prevented qt player from playing some uncompressed avi's i had. in fairness, i have a lot of codecs loaded including huffyuv, blackmagic, avid, 3ivx, & divx. but, they all got along before i introduced this one. i would love for this product to work. it does show promise and did i mention that it's free? mNo-IP X 3.1.1 (Mac OS X)

could use some support

version 3.1 works flawlessly on my ibook. version 3.1.1 doesn't work on my mini. i get a null exception and it quits. both systems are running panther. it's probably something simple, but there is no documentation for this thing. so who knows? the no-ip free service is great and i thank them whole-heartedly. if they would just add some documentation or at least a faq to the site pertaining to the mac client, it would be very helpful. Scanner 1220U 0.1 (Mac OS X)

1200S too!

for the hell of it, i just tried this with my Umax 1200S SCSI scanner running through a Ratoc SCSI -> firewire convertor. Worked like a charm! I'm in tiger. My transparency adapter didn't show up. Like the cropping feature in this application which isn't available when i use the sane import in photoshop. would be nice for us americans if it was in inches instead of metric. also, it's a little scary to read the notes and find out invalid scan size could damage your scanner. that's what is preventing me from recommending it. still, it could be developed into something nice. ToyViewer 4.80 (Mac OS X)

nice preview replacement

i really like the simplicity and elegance of this application. it loads fast with minimum screen clutter. so far, it's been able to open anything i've thrown at it. it's got a lot of functionality to it that preview lacks. also, i love that it displays all the info at the bottom of the frame and that it automatically starts a slide show when you drop a folder of images on it. i also like the application xee another japanese freeware gem with similar functionality. Notes 1.3.4 (Mac OS X)

good & simple

it's a very good notepad. here's my comments that i sent to the author:

thanks for making notes. my 77 year old mother has been using it for her recipes. kudos to your design because this is one of the few applications that she gets intuitively.

however, she did uncover an interface quirk (dare i say bug) that you may wish to address. she has developed this bad habit of using the "close" button when she means to quit an application. i've tried to break her of this habit to no avail. in notes, when you use the close box it's especially confusing because there is no way to get the notepad back without quitting the application. even worse, when you use the "open list" command the list comes back with a big white box where the notepad should be...

i'd suggest removing or graying out the "close button" to prevent this. i'm not sure that technique is possible, but i have seen something done in Apimac Secret Folder that would also fix the problem. when you click the "close button" secret folder quits.

works with scsi convertor!

i'm using the default settings. the important thing is to open the utility and load the firmware then restart the mac. then open the utility and disable it. then restart the mac. you should see the ratoc in the "about this mac" system info under firewire. AFTER you the system recognizes the ratoc, turn on the scanner. open photoshop and you should have an option for sane under import.
