TinkerTool System 1.4 (Mac OS X)

Serious Problem with Mute StartUp Chime

When this option is selected, a small process called TinkerToolStartu runs in the background, eating all the CPU, and suffering from a terrible memory leak. Within 15 minutes, it took over 300MB of real memory. [alert admin]

CocoaJT 5.2 (Mac OS X)

Great App. Fantastic tv and radio news access from the world.

I love this little app. A great way to follow the visual news abroad, especially in the Francophone world. Good work. Frequently updated to correct broken streams. In some ways, however, I prefer the older GUI: easier and more natural to use. LCI doesn't work for me however; hasn't for the last couple of updates. Donations on the way! [alert admin]

iClip 3.5 (Mac OS X)

Nice look and feel, but still a hog.

For what it does, this is app uses too many resources. Compared to any other multi-clipboard, iClip is the worst CPU and memory consumer, even when idle. The most recent releases seem to have fixed the memory leaks, and reduced the memory footprint, but, still, it eats more processor than Entourage and Safari together. [alert admin]

iClip 3.3.2 (Mac OS X)

Why does this consume so much CPU when idle?

Nice... but consumes too much CPU (about the same as Entourage, and more memory!!). I'd expect such an app to stay idle when in hiding.... Makes no sense to me; it's not like it's doing much, yet it eats nearly 5% of my CPU. [alert admin]

MenuMeters 1.2 (Mac OS X)

The best for what it does....

This is by far my favorite menu extra, and one of the few to be the "real thing" so you can actually move this around. Also, it takes nearly no resources compared to other resource thingies, both in footprint and in screen real estate. Just one suggestion: I wish the throughput view of Network took less space. Thanks for a great (and free) app! [alert admin]

Virex X (.Mac edition) 7.5 (Mac OS X)

Amazing but true: FEATURES EXCLUDED FROM THIS RELEASE Scan Contents of Mailboxes -- This Preferences feature of Virex 7.5.0 has been removed from Virex 7.5.1. This product is not meant to be utilized for scanning mails and mailboxes. [alert admin]

PithHelmet 2.1 (Mac OS X)

Still buggy and slow for me. Downgraded once more.

0.7.3 is still what works the best for me. 2.1 takes Safari down, and slows my browsing considerably with temporary hangs. I have Saft installed, too. Maybe a conflict there? Anyhow, I'm staying with 0.7.3 until this is smoother. [alert admin]

WeatherMenu 3.6 (Mac OS X)

Nice features, but takes too much memory.

In my case, it takes a good 30MB (and it grows, as there seems be a small memory leak. Memory usage grows over time). In comparison, WeatherPop takes 6MB. And a much more serious background app like LaunchBar takes less than 10MB. Finally, as otehrs have said, a version history would be very nice--and, quite frankly, expected. [alert admin]

PithHelmet 2.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Love it but....

This version seems buggy. I don't want to blame PithHelmet at once... but since installing this new version Safari is slower, and even prone to hanging and I have to force quit it. Great product, but I suspect there are some bugs that need to be ironed out in this version. [alert admin]

as others have said... constant checking in the logs...

OK. It works. BUT it is going nuts checking for any device every second. Makes my logs grow ridiculously. Fine nonsense, especially since I don't know how to uninsintall this! No support there. [alert admin]

Wizard Creep

Your review of this little free app is pretentious and self-centered. Sorry this app wasn't design for the Mac genius that you are, but to some this is a novel approach and it makes sense. The scripts are well-known, just the presentation is different. You seem to be reviewing not the app itself, but the fact that it isn't designed for such intelligent users as yourself. Your tirade is a little…

Question regarding web-based mail.

I did several tests, and using Safari and Yahoo webmail, my IP was not revealed in the internet headers, etc. So, yes, it works here.

Now Costs

Stop the whining and the uneducated lying. At least, make sure you know what you're talking about. This dev still offers the free version, and this paying version relies on your goodwill. It works fine with no serial, and you can always be the cheapo you seem to be by simply checking the I PAID button. End of story.

compare to anacron?

The main difference is that Macaroni also does the Repair Permissions and the delocalizations automatically. Also, unlike anacron, it will take into consideration whether your laptop is connected to an outlet vs running from the battery.

Definitely a problem...

After trying Safari for several days with PithHelmet 2.0.1 uninstalled (and no problems), I reinstalled it. Within an hour I had my first Safari freeze, then later a second. Doesn't seem to agree with my setup, sadly.

Won't launch

Did you recently install Virex 7.5? If so, reinstall Stuffit Deluxe 8.0.2.
