PhotoFrame 3.1 (Mac OS X)

No problems upgrading; huge improvement

For whatever reason, with free upgrade from 3x. Just downloaded the .dmg, opened, and installed. Worked like a charm. Find 3.1 a substantial improvement over 2x. It's a pleasure to work with and the video tutorials are great. Nice work OnOne! [alert admin]

Concorder Pro 1.0 (Mac OS X)

A genuine miracle!

Concorder Pro is an astoundingly capable application. It generated a concordance listing all instances of every word in a 160 page book in probably less than two seconds. Not only does it show the frequency of occurrence of each word, it also will show you the *context* -- i.e, a *lot* of surrounding text -- in which that word occurs. And, it also does the latter like lightning! // In addition, and equally fast, it will create a simple word list of every word in the text (without the occurrence frequency or the "lookup" function). // The creator may think the code is suboptimal, but the level at which this app works is phenomenal. Not only will it generate the concordance for a lot of text in seconds, it will find and display instances of the word *much* faster than major applications costing hundreds of dollars -- *after* the other app has created its own index. // I found only one seriously insignificant flaw; for some reason, while it will "Save" a word list, the "Save" and Save As" commands don't seem to work when you've generated a concordance. However, exactly the same result as "saving" is accomplished by using the "Export" function. // Of course, there is the little matter of price . . . Oh yeah, IT'S FREE! [alert admin]

Bookdog 4.0.1 (Mac OS X)

WOW!

Been using Bookdog 4.1 for a couple of days now. This little beauty is truly a KILLER APP! Even though some of the competition -- Butler, for example -- does work reasonably well, they don't even come close in terms of power, simplicity, and the just plain pleasure of something that works *exactly* as claimed . . . and as you might wish! Adobe Creative Suite 2.0 (Mac OS X)

Activation a big mistake; Remember Quark Xpress!

Activation -- if its the kind where one has to apply to the manufacturers website *any more than once* for an entire version sequence including updates -- places a completely inappropriate burden on the consumer. (Can you imagine what it would mean to have to re-apply to General Motors to activate your car if you'd had to change the engine out in the boonies someplace?! And, NO, Adobe's site is NOT always reliably operational.) To keep my system and many apps up to date and running well, I use multiple drives and clone my system and applications from a master drive that is kept "clean" and never used for daily work. If "activation" should require that I had to apply to Adobe every time this happened, I'd consider it harassingly burdensome and unacceptable. That would be triply the case as regards my powerbook, which I only rarly -- and generally do not wish to -- connect to the internet. I know dozens of graphics professionals -- and I'd bet there are thousands -- who would just *love* to leave Quark Xpress far behind because of the very practice that Adobe is now apparently embracing. For many reasons, I believe Adobe should be particularly committed to their heavy users. Many of their recent practices -- including pricing of CS1 for those who had already purchased Acrobat Professional constitutes a kick in the teeth. Enouogh said! [alert admin]

Snapz Pro X 2.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Wonderful Substitute for this App

I have been waiting for a long time to be able to replace Snapz pro X. At last, I have found an excellent substitute YellowMug Software's -- SnapNDrag -- and it's free! (No, it won't copy movies; but it will even make *timed* screen shots so that one can get the cursor off screen when the image is recorded.) Why is Snapz Pro X a pain in the neck? I keep a consistently "clean," updated backup of my main hard drive and every couple of months reformat that drive, then restore all my apps along with any new additions. Every single time you do this, when you try to open your fully licensed copy of Snapz Pro X, you are told your serial number has expired and you cannot use the application until you have applied to Ambrosia via the internet for a new one. Any of you who *think* you have backed up your applications, if you have Sanpz Pro X, think again! On restoration of your hard drive, unless you can get onto the internet, which can be a major problem with a powerbook and in many other circumstances, you are SOL! (I have over 100 apps on my drive; can you *imagine* what it would be like if you not only had to re-enter the serial number for each app -- bad enough! -- but *also* had to apply to the creator's website for a new one???) Once in a long while, when, e.g., I have to copy a movie, it might be worth renewing my serial number. In the meantime, I'm extremely pleased with freeware SnapNDrag . . . as well as other shareware YellowMug products. [alert admin]

CopyPaste-X 2.0b3 (Mac OS X)

Communication Problem Corrected!

This is a follow-up to a comment I had made a month or so ago concerning problems I'd had communicating directly with ScriptSoftware across an extended period of time. I have now heard from Julian Miller and am very satisfied with his response. (I understand that the ScriptSoftware system for handling comments/questions addressed directly to Julian, et al, has now been considerably strengthened so that inquiries that don't belong on their Forum -- eg, involving problems with specific serial numbers, etc -- will no longer be misssed.) The CopyPaste app has always been remarkably effective and trouble-free, in my experience. I know of no better way to make inputs that require multiple clipboards. (Think about how many times you need to input two or more items from a data source you'd rather not have to keep going back to!) It's *well* worth the money! -- now particularly when it's so easy to turn on and off! I appreciate the continuiing improvements as well. [alert admin]

CopyPaste-X 2.0b3 (Mac OS X)

pneaman

Incredibly poor service. My CopyPaste Serial number for CopyPaste X has never worked for over a year -- both in Jaguar and now in Panther. (No Problems with the OS 9 version in the past.) Despite having written to Scriptsofware Support as well as to the two principles, i've never heard back one word. Pathetic! Yes, I do know they have a forum. This sort of question, as well as another one concerning switching licenses for an OS-9-only application I inadvertantly purchased in error, is not the sort of question for a forum. The creators of almost all other Shareware providers I've dealt with -- the ones rated highly in VersionTracker -- usually respond in a day or so, often within hours! I suggest staying away from their products unless you are absolutely confident you'll never need help. [alert admin]

Just doesn't fit my usage pattern

I couldn't agree more. Like many pros, I use a *number* of drives -- all with the same system and apps I clone from a master drive I keep clean and never use for work. Activation is going to make that a nightmare. On the other hand, I don't think Adobe has any right to stop you from using it CS on as many DRIVES as you wish -- so long as they are connected to…

Only the first 16 digits are needed.

I, too was surprised when your registration process required my Photoshop registration number. I have a *large* number of Photoshop plug-ins and have never experienced such a request -- despite your statement to the contrary. Even more interesting, is the fact that, for huge numbers of Adobe product CS users, their Photoshop registration number is *also* the registration number for either two or four *additional* Adobe products. In sum, Adobe is trusting…

Re Snapz Pro vs SnapNDrag

I don't believe that in my previous comment I meant to imply that SnapNDrag is fully equivalent to Snapz pro; it isn't -- *except*, so far as I can see, in regard to capture of screens that do not contain moving images or sound. In the case of "still" screen images, I believe it actually has an advantage over Snapz Pro in that with its "timed" shutter release, it's possible to get the cursor…
