I don't get any error or indication of problems, it just doesn't show any new posts. so I jumped over to Shrook and all is well. I was trying to switch from Shrook with the hope that NNW would be less RAM-hungry, but I guess I'll never know. to make matters worse, it sounds like the latest full version has not gone over well. the horizon looks rather unpleasant for what seems to have been an excellent app. sorry news gator! GimmeSomeTune 3.5 (Mac OS X)
this looks like a great app, I just can't get it to work! I set up my hot keys, but they weren't working. so I quit the app and tried to restart, but it wouldn't show up. I dumped the prefs and tried again -- no luck. I used the uninstaller, then reinstalled -- still nothing. so I tried starting it from the disc image and viola! so I copied it back to my apps folder, logged out, logged back in and it worked... until I tried to restart it again.
for now, I'm back to ByteController, which drops out on me very rarely. not as well appointed, but it does it's job.

first of all, let me say that I love this app! for an obsessive classifier of type and this is the greatest thing that has ever happened to font management. I use the smart sets to put all of my fonts into style-based sets based on the style-based folders on my disk. I then use manual sets to build client sets. I am experiencing a couple of challenges though. for one thing, I find that it's using a tremendous amount of ram. but I'm a little surprised that I don't see any other comments at the top of the list about that -- maybe I'm doing something wrong. I don't have an enormous catalog of fonts; something like 2400, big but not unheard of. I do leave my workstation running for a week at a time, so maybe there's a small memory leak that's adding up. in any case, it's for this reason I've stopped using it for management. I was also really excited about using the comments feature to augment my cataloging. unfortunately, the feature works so sluggishly that it takes 15 seconds or more for one typed word to appear on screen. it makes the feature so frustrating that I've simply not used it. the bottom line, for me, is that whether you use it for management or just cataloging, it's a great app. in a cataloging-only workflow, the drag and drop copy feature even makes it a great manual management tool! absolutely superb. it handles large libraries beautifully, both on import and over time. there are great organizational tools, e.g. importing folders as sets, smart sets, and comments (that can be used with smart sets), exporting font preveiws, and so on. you can even dig into every last detail of a font's built-in info. possibly best of all, it allows you to clean out font caches. admins can even turn on admin-free mode allowing un-authorized users to delete these troublesome system files. I don't use the auto-activation junk -- I don't know why anyone does -- so no comment there. I will say, I don't recommend that stuff with any app. [alert admin]

well, for me anyway. I've been searching for ages to find something that allows me to get rid of all the scraps of paper on my desk and start taking notes on my Mac. this is the first app that I've stuck with for more than a week -- now going on four months. the basic functionality keeps it out of the way, but always at hand. my only complaint has already been stated here: why hide the stored data and make it hard to back up? I back-up my most important notes and preferences all the time, but sidenote makes it hard. all things considered, I love it! [alert admin]

Empire 2.0 (Mac OS X)
I can get the app to open, save a dat file, and then begin to create the map (according to the status pane at top). but, then it crashes as soon as I give it a command (which is requested via a dialog). I'm using 10.3.4 on a 1.3G PB G4 17". [alert admin]

DTP Multicalc 1.0 (Mac OS 9)
certainly nothing fancy in the freeware state (probably not in the shareware state either), but exactly what I needed to simplify grid calculations. I've been wishing for something like this for some time and I see it becoming on of my must-haves. I haven't had much time with the app yet, but I imagine that I will register it just to show my support for the authorâ019s efforts. thank you much, Mr Ohvo! [alert admin]

Convert 2 2.0 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
see continued investment in this great little utility. it's a very compact application that can make a big contribution to your day. I'm happy to report that on my Yosemite 400 OS 9.2.2 I did not experience the crashes reported by GomezAddams. - - - my only complaint is with the way points and picas are calculated. now maybe I'm just sloppy, but when I work with these figures in my layout apps 1"=6p=72pts... not roughly, exactly! furthermore, picas expressed with decimal points aren't very useful when I'm constructing a grid. for instance, 14pts should be expressed as 1p2 in the typographic world, right? these sorts of problems limit my need for the app greatly. - - - John61254, the *formula* you speak of is proper scientific notation of a number with extended decimal places. I am the wrong person to describe this given my amazing lack of training, but an explaination of this can certainly be found on the web somewhere. [alert admin]

iTunes Tool 2.0.2 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
withold my rating since everyone else is having such good luck -- I must be screwing up somehow! I found the controls (volume was my main concern) to be terribly unresponsive. after about half an hour I found it was faster to just dig for the iTunes window. it really seemed quite counter productive to me so I tossed it within an hour. update fix? i checked the developer's site, but i see nothing there either. there is no doubt that this is a wonderful app, but i don't want to replace my old version without some knowledge of why. [alert admin]
