VLC media player 0.8.1 (Mac OS X)
AC3 audio decode broken on new dual G5's =( ![]()

Everything works great except that video files encoded with AC3 audio produce speaker-blowingly-bad scratchy sound on my new Dual 2.5ghz G5. This is really unfortunate as VLC seems to be the only app that will directly open the .m2t (MPEG2 Transport Stream format) that AVCBrowser produces from my new cablebox =( Ah, the joys and sorrows of bleeding-edge... iEatBrainz 1.05 (Mac OS X)
1) I'm an extremely anal tagger with a very large music database and would thus be a great candidate for submitting song profiles, but I see no obvious way to do so. 2) I like to include the right Year in the tag (so that I can have release-year-based smart playlists) and MusicBraiz's database doesn't seem to include the year reliably. CronniX 2.1 (Mac OS X)
Can't extract gzip for some reason
I love this app but I'm at my mom's and need to schedule a backup job (go figure) but the file the download link here points to seems to not extract! gunzip CronniX_2.1i.dmg.gz gunzip: CronniX_2.1i.dmg.gz: not in gzip format [alert admin]

With the latest version (using 96-112kbps AAC and mp4), I can squeeze a 1.5hr FULL-REZ rip onto a 700MB CD at a quality that I simply cannot believe. And it plays in QuickTime! Also great for putting a few movies on my powerbook for the road... Time to join NetFlix... ;) Can't wait for 0.6 release, or 1.0 eventually! [alert admin]

Doesn't seem to work. Errors on every retrieve. Error: Can't get |Details| of "". (-1728) Does this have anything to do with why Synergy also doesn't work? (amazon.com apparently cracking down on this sort of thing...) [alert admin]

MacMAME 0.77u2a (Mac OS X)
Hangs when put in background for too long
MacMAME seems to hang your beloved game when you have hit Escape and then Command-H the app, do something else for a while, and then try to get back into the game. This is a G4/1.25GHz Powerbook, 1 gig RAM, 10.3. [alert admin]

Try a non-compressed file format
Perhaps you missed that day in Computing 101 but most media formats these days are already stored in a compressed fashion and trying to compress them further is usually going to be futile. This would include jpg, gif, mp3, m4a, png, mov, mpg, avi, mp4, etc. etc. Basically almost all formats except for BMP and uncompressed DV are going to already be stored compressed. PDF's are also usually compressed (but not always), TXT/DOC/XLS/PPT is not…

I note that SafariSIA IS a universal binary and does much of what Sogudi does. Pimpmysafari.com also has some other neat safari add-ons ;)

Uh, you just turned on your FTP server and the SIDE EFFECT was that Mac OS told your firewall to allow in/out FTP traffic. You should have just opened the FTP port on your firewall under the Firewall tab.

I have a Powerbook 1.25GHz. I can rip a movie at half speed (about 15fps); so a 2 hour movie takes about 4-5 hours. This is actually normal. I don't know why my Powerbook is doing it faster than your desktop unless you are doing lots of other things with the Mac in the meantime.

Don't use QuickTime for DivX movies
Use VLC (VideoLan Client) www.videolan.org. That's what people use these days to play DivX movies. Plays almost ALL known movie formats. There has never been a decent AVI codec for Quicktime, just accept it. VLC also has some other nice features.

Hey arsehole, I for one am happy I can find neat PHP web apps on Versiontracker. And PHP *IS* shipped with OS X by default, contrary to your obviously underinformed opinion, all you have to do is turn it on in the Apache config. I already use two great PHP web applications on my OS X machine (myPhoto to automatically share my iPhoto library and andromeda to automatically share my mp3's) and I think you're…

you are in fact retarded. your computer can't be asleep. duh, it's practically shut off when asleep. and you can connect to your home computer if you know its IP address. this is like basic Internet knowledge. every computer gets an IP address, like a phone number. If you want to give it a name, go to one of those free domain-naming services like dyndns.org which will allow you to give your IP address a…

re: Not as "light" as I would have liked
I found a command-line mp3 player! "mpg123". It uses 5% cpu on my G4/733. I guess that's the lowest I can get ;) There are also a couple of front-ends for it which conceivably also use little CPU. http://www.versiontracker.com/mp/new_search.m?productDB=mac&mode=Quick&search=mpg123&submit=submit&OS_Filter=MacOSX
