McAfee VirusScan 8.6.1 (Mac OS X)

Really necessary?

OK. I admit, back on my iMacDV I did run Virex during the free beta period. When that ended, some insane paranoia caused me to switch to Symantec. Upon benchmarking and other speedtesting on my MacBook, I removed it. I haven't run ANY antivirus on my MacBooks in the last 2 years without any failure. I find that simple firewalling and router settings have kept my machine problem-free? I have an external HDD that Time Machine keeps updated for me hourly, and I don't understand the need for this product, or others like it? Really. I've got 30 years of I.T. experience and I simply choose not to slow my Mac down with this sort of thing. I open all my email, download lots, and browse tirelessly without worry. Is it just peace-of-mind that necessitates the expense of a product like this? I'm happy with Time Machine and wonder what it is that you're getting with this software that Time Machine's scheduled FREE hourly backups doesn't provide? Especially when I see that Time Machine actually cures all of the issues I've seen mentioned which are caused by this software... but if it makes you feel better... send me your money, I'll tell you that you're OK weekly rather than running a long laborious scan getting the same result... This might be better discussed in a forum, but I couldn't hold back, and wanted to put it out there for people like my dad who are looking at this going "eek! I need to protect myself against terrorism!" [alert admin]

SEEdit Maxi 2007 r6 (Mac OS X)

SEEdit for all HTML/XHTML/CSS needs

I've been using SEEdit for a while now, and it's become my favorite sitebuilder. It does not crash, unlike many/all of the others I've tried, and it's quite agile. It has autocomplete, spellcheck, tidyHTML, while at the same time organizing all of your files for you into their respective folders. Sven is the most mindful author I've encountered, offering solutions and recommendations, support, and new versions CONSTANTLY. I believe it's every week that a new version of the beta arrives, which is easily obtained as SEEdit checks automatically for any updates, which you can restrict to only full releases or betas. I use it daily to instruct in my classes, and find it very navigable and customizable. It works hand-in-hand with your CSS editor, or you can use it instead. It has taught me quite a bit, also, as I instruct. If you submit a problem, you can count on getting a reply within 10 minutes, and a fix in either the current week's release or the following. This is how applications were meant to be supported, long before the huge corporations took over and blotted out the sun from smaller developers. I will NEVER be without it! I don't usually comment on alot of software, but I believe that every Mac user should buy a copy of this software, even if they're just learning. [alert admin]
