Apple Epson Printer Drivers 2.1 (Mac OS X)

R340: No better, but no worse

On my C2D Intel 24" iMac, 10.6.1 I installed this rascal without problem, but I see no improvement. All was dandy before. I suppose this is because an R340 is "old", and Apple/Epson somehow thought it (too) qualified for a generic update. If Apple, or Epson, were on the ball (IMNHO) they would have included a list of N/A machines and ergo, Software Update would not show this as required. [alert admin]

CNET TechTracker app 1.0 beta 3 (Mac OS X)

My experiences...

I have not tried CNET Tech Tracker, but I was a subscriber to the former VersionTracker Pro (VTP), (owned by CNET). My results: 1. They are great in taking your money. The default for a 1-year subscription is to automatically renew (with a consequent billing to one’s credit card). 2. When I sent emails to express a false positives or negatives or ask for help, I always got the same computer generated reply. When I continued to pursue the matter, I received a real message promising that my problem would be looked in to. Then 30 days later I would follow up to the person who promised he would personally resolve the issue, and you guessed it, another computer generated reply. This scenario occurred several times, perhaps 6 times over a 2-year period. Eventually, I just quit wasting my time and quit berating myself for throwing money away. In place of VTP, I have happily begun using AppUpdate (donation ware): http://gkaindl.com/software/app-update It is a Dashboard Widget that, IMNHO, does what VTP was supposed to do. The interface is not as polished and some features are missing, but operationally, it's as advertised. Should you choose, it will simultaneously check for updates on VT, MacUpdate, and Apple, checks for updates manually or automatically (daily or weekly), etc. Works with 10.6.1 and is grief free. Mail Attachments Iconizer 2.1.5 (Mac OS X)

A first-rate application

Like others, I would prefer to pay less, but alas, over the years, I have paid much more for much less. IMNHO, the developer has done a first-rate job in creating a robust, problem and conflict free application that does what it promises; even the tech support is first-rate. In sum, to the developer, I can but say thank you and bravo! [alert admin]

CNET TechTracker app 1.0 beta 2 (Mac OS X)

An Alternative That Works

From the above CNET product description: "Updates are guaranteed safe and spyware free as TechTracker utilizes CNET Download..." Oddly, there are no details re the guarantee. Perhaps I could get a new pony for my granddaughter. Indeed I am pleased that I let my VT Pro subscription lapse. In place of VTP, I have begun using AppUpdate http://gkaindl.com/software/app-update (donation ware). It is a Dashboard Widget that, IMNHO, does what VTP was supposed to do. The interface is not as polished and some features are missing, but operationally it's as advertised. Should you choose, it will simultaneously check, on a scheduled basis, for updates on VT, MacUpdate, and Apple. CNET, Feh! [alert admin]

File Buddy 9.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Must Continually Enter Serial Number

Nearly every time I launch FB, I get the advisory that I must enter my serial number. This occurs so often (about 90% of the time) that I now keep an alias of the File Buddy.fbAutoReg on my desktop. I'm wondering if anyone is experiencing the same problem and if there is a fix. I just wrote the developer. Should I get a response, I'll post the relevant details. [alert admin]

CNET TechTracker app 1.0 beta 2 (Mac OS X)

"Updates are GUARANTEED safe" Or what?

Do your money back? Amazing how many companies promise a guarantee, but somehow fail to reveal the details... FWIW, I too suspect this is a rebranding of VersionTracker Pro. [alert admin]

PithHelmet 2.8.5 (Mac OS X)

Does PH Work With Snow Leopard?

I have tried the unofficial fix (changing the max bundle bit), but am unable to get PH to work with Sl. Might someone know the secret to PH success or where I may have messed up? Your comments most appreciated. [alert admin]

DiskWarrior 4.2 (Mac OS X)

v4.2 works as designed

Well, at least as far as I can tell at this early stage. The real proof will come when (if) I have a major directory problem. [alert admin]

Addressix 1.4.9 (Mac OS X)

Compatible with Snow Leopard???

Like others, I found this to be a very nice app, getting a bit old in the tooth, but still nice. Apparently, Snow Leopard, does not install Rosetta by default. One must choose the custom install and then proceed. Addressix is the last app that I have that was writtren for PPC, and thus, when installing Snow Leopard, I will move forward and switch to a different address app rather than installing Rosetta just for this app. Indeed I enjoyed the ride, but it is coming to an end... MaxMenus 1.5.1 (Mac OS X)

Will MM work with Snow Leopard

Since Proterian is no more, is there any chance that the source code will be (re) licensed, made open source or whatever, so that it can made compatible with Snow Leopard, etc. Indeed I am saddened to see Proterian fade away... [alert admin]

Developer Out Of Business

I have used DockChanger for years and have been quite satisfied. Indeed I shall miss Whimsicaly Plucky Software and hope they are soon able to return. As for me, their products are first-rate and costs competitive. Also, 'tis a class act to remove all registration restrictions prior to signing off. A sad day...

Little Snitch UIAgent still not 64-bit

I doubt if I would see a difference/improvement were LS really be 64-bit, but I do think developers should comply with "truth in advertising". For me, the issue is not the number of bits, but whether I can rely on the developer to do as he claims.

Does PH Work With Snow Leopard?

I should have caught this earlier as it answers the question. Alas it's not the answer I wanted. From the developer's site: "As far as I know, PithHelmet (and more importantly SIMBL) is not compatible with Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6). Once I get a new Intel-based Mac with Snow Leopard, I'll look into it." -- I fear this could be a very long wait...

Updater Problems

FWIW: If your original DW disk was a DVD, a CD won't work. You must, when burning, (as stated in the directions) use a DVD. I don't mean to be abrupt (really). Just hoping I can help with your frustration.

Doesn't work on OS 10.4

The "white globe" issue is easily resolved: 1. Launch GE 2. In GE preferences, select the 3D View tab. 3. On the far-right, within Graphics Mode, select: "Use safe mode". 4. Quit and restart GE I too had that problem Paradoxically, I found the solution by searching Google.

REMOVE GOOGLE UPDATE

I believe I followed the instructions precisely, but when I tried to relaunch GE, it went in to a loop that precluded the app from opening. Of course, it may have been operator error... At any rate, a reinstall and directing Little Snitch to block GE Software Updater put things to right.

Little Snitch To The Rescue

All the more reason to have Little Snitch. It won't hamper the GE operation, nor does it alter the GE configuration, but it does preclude it from calling home. It works great, but it is a bit pricy (IMNHO) $29.95. http://www.obdev.at/products/littlesnitch/index.html
