VueScan 8.4.79 (Mac OS X)

Excellent: Fast flexible and customizable

I reluctantly spent $40 for VueScan after trying unsuccessfully to fix the Canon TWAIN driver which broke after upgrading to OS 10.5.3. After using VueScan for about a month, I'll never go back to using the TWAIN interface (which is still broken anyway). VueScan is so much faster and has so many more options for customization and automation that overall I save a lot of time even if I have to save the scans and import them into other apps. Another plus is that it does a better job of cleaning up scanned 35mm slides and restoring the correct color of faded ones. I also really like the ability to save Profiles of settings for different tasks. My only quibble is with the documentation. The User Guide accessible from VueScan Help is an HTML document with no search function. Fortunately, there is a .pdf version downloadable from the developers web site. [alert admin]

Intuit Quicken 2006 R6 (Mac OS X)

Very poor quotes support

The Quotes server, an essential and highly touted component of Quicken for your investment portfolio is currently malfunctioning and has been off and on for six months or more. This is simply unacceptable. I will not upgrade to the next version until Intuit gets their act together again. [alert admin]

PdfCompress 5.4 (Mac OS X)

SELECTABLE compression, not all or nothing

I create a lot of how-to pdfs which include screen shots that are posted on a website for downloading. It is nice to have small files, but it is more important that they be readable. With most pdf compression you get max compression/poor image quality or nothing. The screen shots usually make the viewer think they are desperately in need of cataract surgery. With PDFCompress I can get a good compromise between image quality and file size. And the interface couldn't be simpler. Adjust the quality in Preferences and drag and drop the pdf onto the application icon. It's inexpensive, fast, simple, effective and works flawlessly in Leopard, too. What's not to like? Is it working for anybody…?!

Same problem - no ads blocked, with Safari in either 32 or 64 bit mode, I did install SIMBL 0.9.7.

A Rare Apple miss

I agree, and it is not getting any better. Every "upgrade" just adds more window dressing and skips the fundamental missing features like calculations, text styles, flexibility in positioning and sizing fields, printing labels of many kinds etc., that were in Appleworks many years ago. I'm not spending another dime on Bento until it becomes at least as capable as Appleworks.
