McAfee VirusScan 8.6.1 (Mac OS X)

Buyer Beware!

I installed VirusScan 8.6.1 several days ago on 2 PPC Macs (a desktop and a laptop) and the software caused shutdown kernel panics on both machines. It also caused intermittent interruption of the audio on the laptop. I've uninstalled the software. To add insult to injury, I called their customer service # and explained the situation to the first rep I got, and she suggested I talk to tech support. I politely declined and said I want a refund. Again, she said she would transfer me to tech support. I said please, do not send me to tech support - I don't want the software, I want a refund. And she transferred me to tech support anyway. After being on hold for 12 minutes, they disconnected my call and I had to start all over. I'm now 11 minutes into my 2nd call. Don't buy the software and don't wasted your time with this company - they don't know what they're doing in the Mac environment. [alert admin]

Formac studio tvr 3.1.0 (Mac OS X)

Don't waste your time with this update

I've been using the Formac Studio TVR for over a year now, and the software is really clunky. This 3.1.0 update doesn't really improve on previous versions very well. I use the TVR primarily to watch TV on my iMac at home, and on ocassion will record something, but the program doesn't display a TV signal very clearly and the various video size/mode transitions are slow and unattractive. Vidi is a better product for the TVR, it functions much more smoothly and the video quality is much better than the TVR software. And it's a free download. [alert admin]

Epson Stylus Color 3000 1.7a (Mac OS X)

It's a miracle of modern technology

Every freelancer and/or small graphics firm I know has this printer. And it's the LAST WIDE FORMAT PRINTER DRIVER TO BE UPDATED BY EPSON. Thanks Epson. You guys rule. Idiots. [alert admin]

QuarkXPress 6.0 (Mac OS X)

Design professionals: boycott Quark

I strongly urge everyone to take a stand against this company. They have done nothing but make life miserable for the design community, and they deserve to be put out of business, or at the very least, end the Mac side of their business. After reading many, many nasty reviews of Quark 5 and 6, it appears that Quark has done it again - released a substandard and expensive program. Take a stand: do not buy Quark 6, and do your duty to convince your clients, production departments and vendors to purchase InDesign. Or at the very least, consider a PDF workflow. The only we can affect change is to rally at the end-user level. [alert admin]

SilverFast SE Microtek 6.0.1r33 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

I too have…

a ScanMaker 4 and was disappointed that there's no driver release date posted on the Microtek site. I've been able to get VueScan software to recognize it under OS 10.2.2. It's shareware (I think about $40). Do a search on VersionTracker to find it. Might be cheaper than a new scanner. [alert admin]

Does anyone have…

info on IomegaWare as it relates to a G3 PowerBook FW hot-swappable Zip 100 module? It seems that after several Mac OS and Iomega updates, Zip drives no longer mount unless the Zip module is in the drive bay before start-up or restart. Any info would help. Currently using OS 9.2.2 and IomegaWare 3.5. Not sure when this started happening. Tried reverting to 2 prior Iomega updates--no dice. [alert admin]

Adobe Type Manager Deluxe (ATM) 4.6.1 (Mac OS 9)

ATTENTION: Do not…

use this update, especially with OS 9.2.2. It will cause major problems with your system as well as freezing/crashing/font problems with QuarkXPress 4.11. Stick with ATM Deluxe 4.6--it works fine. [alert admin]

Virex Definitions February (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Beware. After updating…

Virex to the latest preferences file, the first time my system started up and scanned my HD with the new preference, all applications on my HD appeared to be removed except for the System Folder. Upon restart, everything was back to normal. Thanks for the kick in the head Virex. Using Virex 6.1, Mac OS 9.2.2, G3 Firewire PB 500. [alert admin]

Apple CarbonLib 1.5 (Mac OS 9)

Avoid CarbonLib 1.5…

if you're using 9.0.4. It caused hyper-senstive Finder behavior. Examples: single-clicking on icons would actually launch the file/application, click-and-dragging a window's title bar would actually window-shade them up or down, icons would not respond to clicks at all sometimes, etc. Very annoying. Reverted to 1.4 and all is fine. [alert admin]

Nikon View 4.3.1 (Mac OS 9)

This software froze…

OS 9.0.4 after installing, and even with extensions off. This software sucks and should be avoided at all cost. [alert admin]
