DiskWarrior 4.0 (Mac OS X)
Alsoft leaves DiskWarrior 4.0 purchasers stranded ![]()

On Oct. 26, 2007, long-time consumers and supporters of DiskWarrior received this promise at http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/support.html "An updated version of DiskWarrior that has complete Leopard compatibility will be released soon as a free download for existing owners of DiskWarrior 4 version 4.0. On Jan. 21, 2008, Alsoft announced on the above webpage that 4.1 had been released: but not to registered owners of 4.0. Instead: "Owners of DiskWarrior 4 version 4.0 will soon be able to download a free CD updater." Sadly, as of Feb. 29, DiskWarrior 4.0 registered owners were still stranded. For discussion of the issue, see this MacOSXHints forum discussion: http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=85356 [alert admin]

Adobe Acrobat Pro 8.1.2 (Mac OS X)
Acrobat Pro 8.1.0 won't update to 8.1.2?
I'm running Adobe Acrobat Pro 8.1.0 with OS 10.5.1. When I run the patch, and navigate into the Acrobat Pro folder, the application is grayed out and I can't select it. When that happened, I thought I'd try to update, instead, from within the application. Its Help said to click on the update button in the Help pulldown menu. But there is no update option under Acrobat Pro 8.1.0 Help. What am I missing? Respectfully, Norm [alert admin]

Tiger Cache Cleaner 3.2.6 (Mac OS X)
Tiger Cache Cleaner saved boot volume when Disk Utility, DiskWarrior, & TechTool Pro couldn't ![]()

This exceptional multi-purpose utility is backed by superb support from its developer. Case in point: I could not fix an OS 10.3.9 boot volume with OS 10.4.8's Disk Utility, DiskWarrior 4 and TechTool Pro 4.5.2. Doing a Safe boot into Panther also failed to help. I emailed TCC's developer to ask if there was some way I could run Tiger Cache Cleaner to clean the caches of a Panther volume while booted into Tiger. He shared with me a sequence of commands to key in after doing a Single User mode boot. It cleaned the caches and fixed what the other utilities could not. That saved me from spending a lot of time and tedium re-installing the OS. The developer has now provided for backward compatibility so that I and others can install a Single-User-mode Tiger Cache Cleaner script while booted into a Panther volume. I had already installed TCC's script to work with OS 10.4.8. That script "will check and repair the boot volume, clean caches, and repair permissions. Upon completion, it will reboot your machine normally." I have used Tiger Cache Cleaner (and its Panther and Jaguar predecessors) over the years for a number of other valuable functions beyond cleaning caches. Respectfully, Norm [alert admin]

Microsoft Office 2004 11.3.4 (Mac OS X)
11.3.4--Word version number changes, Excel+Entourage still 11.3.3
Running the Microsoft Update from Entourage, it changed the version number of Word from 11.3.3 to 11.3.4. There was no change in Excel and none in Entourage. So far, all three components play nice with OS 10.4.8 on a Dual G5 2.0 Respectfully, Norm [alert admin]

11.3.3 works fine on Dual G5 2.0 with 10.4.8
Ran Entourage/Help/Check for Updates and followed screen instructions. The download and installation went without incident. Entourage, Word and Excel all are working fine. Respectfully, Norm [alert admin]

Live Update works like charm on Dec 21 update; also downloadable
I used Live Update without incident. Out of curiosity, I checked the Symantec website and found the download up and working at: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/download/pages/US-NMC.html Respectfully, Norm [alert admin]

Updated by going under the Help pulldown menu to "Check for Updates." It installed without incident after I had quit out of all Office programs. Version numbers: Entourage updated from 11.2.5 to 11.3.1 but both Word and Excel remained at 11.3.0. No issues whatsoever in putting Entourage, Excel and Word through their paces. It would be nice if there never were any security vulnerabilities to patch but I do appreciate the frequent and quick efforts of Microsoft and of Apple to respond to discovery of holes. Respectfully, Norm [alert admin]

Updated 10.4.8 on both the G5 and the G4 via their Software Update. Not even one permission needed repair on the G5 but Disk Utility did find and correct a permissions problem on the G4. Both had tested clean prior to the Security Update. Respectfully, Norm [alert admin]

Well said, Pendragon. With the PPC version of OS 10.5.2, my experience has been the same as Pendragon's with one exception: I'm running Entourage and it works just fine in Office 12.1.0. IMPORTANT: I took to heart the counsel in the Entourage Newsgroup to backup the Main Identity and keeping it in a safe place before updating. Critical reason beyond normal precautions: because 12.1.0 makes any databases created by pre-update Entourage versions…

There are several references to installing and running Tiger Cache Cleaner's single user mode in the user manual I downloaded with the application. It would be helpful if they also were consolidated into one section but until they are, you might do as I did and and do a search of the manual for single user and then after reading the first, keep searching for the same phrase until you've found and read all…

Actually, I noticed that the date on the updater, itself, is Dec. 22 rather than the Dec. 21 date specified in the review/comment options.

Forgot to mention that I used TextEdit to open the "info.plist file." I was initially stumped when clicking on "info.plist file" didn't do anything. Once TextEdit opened the file , all I had to do was do a Command-F find of MaxBundleVersion and type in its place 420.
