Fan Control 1.1 (Mac OS X)
I originally rated this software four stars; I'm going to have to revise that rating. FanControl has a few problems that need to be addressed before I give it another try: 1. The installer drops a PackageMaker project file called "Untitled.pmproj" at the root of the boot disk after installing. That's pretty minor though. 2. The installer requires a reboot. I don't get it. Why can't it use the SystemStarter script to directly launch the startup item? 3. Most seriously, the background task that FanControl launches is constantly using the CPU even when it's doing nothing. This is a fairly serious problem because it wastes battery power. [alert admin]

Redline 1.0.0 (Mac OS X)
So I plugged in my gamepad and expected it to work with Redline. First, it didn't recognize that the controller supports force feedback. Second, the game only allows assignment of the steering and acceleration/brakes, and only to analog controls, so it's impossible to play using manual shift or use the controller to navigate the menus. Third, no matter how many times I calibrated the joystick, the steering was never centered, which made in-game steering impossible. This game looks promising, but I think I'll wait for a version that has better gamepad support. [alert admin]

Skyrocket 1.2.1 (Mac OS X)
Use SaverLab to run Skyrocket as an application
There's a separate application called "SaverLab" that can be used to run Skyrocket, and other screen savers as well, inside an application. You can even run multiple instances of Skyrocket at once in SaverLab. You should be able to find the app here on VT. [alert admin]

iChatOnLogin.app 1.05 (Mac OS X)
This program's dangerous on laptops. Why can't it just run, do its thing, and then quit? [alert admin]

7zX 1.4.2r2 (Mac OS X)
It's free and it compresses well. What's not to like about 7zX? Well... 1. There's some "check for update" spyware in the program that apparently can't be turned off. 2. It always seems to bring up some Growl-like window asking for money. Why can't it just use Growl so I can customize its alerts? 3. The program won't run and stay running; it always just does its one task and then it quits. [alert admin]

Great screen saver, great port. I've had no problems with it. [alert admin]

Skyrocket 1.2 (Mac OS X)
The Rage 128 minimum requirement is a theoretical requirement. Skyrocket requires hardware 3D acceleration and will definitely not run on Macs that use software rendering, such as the Bondi iMac. Unfortunately I only have a limited amount of hardware on hand, and I sold my last Rage 128 card years ago, so I'm sorry I haven't been able to directly test it on the card. As for the sound: 1. The "delay" in the sound is there because it is realistic. The speed of sound is much, much, much slower than the speed of light. If you go to a real fireworks show, you're always going to hear the fireworks some time after you see them because they exploded a far distance away from your vantage point. 2. You can turn the sound off by setting the volume to 0, which is the default setting. [alert admin]

Good idea, implementation could be a little better ![]()

It's a simple screen saver that shows the current phase of the moon. The only problem with it is the content on the screen doesn't move, which kind of makes it useless if you're looking for something to prevent phosphor burn-in on a CRT display (which is why screen savers were devised in the first place). But if you've got an LCD, then that won't be a problem. [alert admin]

There's no more admin password, but I'm still wondering why it needs an installer. Also, the English localization is pretty poor, it defaults to checking for updates on startup (I really wish applications asked me first), and it doesn't remember the temperature unit setting in the preferences between launches (I set it to Fahrenheit and it reverts to Celsius when restarting the app, but only in the preferences). But it does seem to work without admin access this time. [alert admin]

ZigVersion 1.0 Beta5 (Mac OS X)
There's no way to make ZigVersion only show files that are modified/conflicted/unknown/etc., or at least none that I could find. There also appears to be no support for diffing changed files, diffing two revisions of the repository, or resolving conflicts. The lack of these features kill the product for me unfortunately. ZigVersion also lacks the ability to lock/unlock files, and shows file sizes in terms of bytes instead of something more useful. I'd be willing to try it again once these features are added, though. The change was made because Tiger's OpenAL implementation is broken on PowerPC. I was able to partially work around it for a while, but it was an ugly hack, it didn't always work, and it was making the download larger. It was easier just to remove it and require Leopard for PPC sound, which doesn't sound like a big deal to me, seeing that Leopard will be out tomorrow. I'm sorry I had to do this,…

That's why you're supposed to make regular backups... Also, you could try asking the author for the previous version.

Your argument would be valid if we were still using Mac OS X 10.0 or 10.1, but as of 10.2 and later, the application is automatically prebound when it is launched. (The "Optimizing" phase of installing just updates the prebinding.) So the installer is not necessary, except for maybe a few people who are afraid of drag-and-drop installs...
