Bookdog 5.1.21 (Mac OS X)
i say this every year or so. if you run a web browser on a mac, you really should have bookdog, too. the app and the developer are a stellar examples of what mac shareware and developers can be. right up there with graphicconverter, launchbar, and little snitch in my book. that is: not only essential, but constantly improving. rock on. Intego VirusBarrier X4 10.4.4 (Mac OS X)
seriously irritating upgrade policy
bought my x4 upgrade in november. january: intego feels i should shell out another forty-five bucks for the upgrade to x5. this is not the way to build a client base. [alert admin]

if so, this version of firefox may be the browser for you! averaging five force quits a day with 2.0.0.8, running tiger on a G4 ibook. wish i'd stuck with 2.0.0.7. seriously. may have to go back to safari if we don't get an improved update soon. [alert admin]

Asiva Correct+Apply Color 2.2 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
one of my three favorite second-party photoshop plugins. ever spent half an hour isolating an object and adjusting its color via the curves dialogue? this beast does it better and faster, and allows nuancing i'd have to use multiple layers to approximate. it's curves on steroids, and then some. educational, too. i've learned more about digital color playing with this plugin than i have from a lot of books. never had any problem with asiva's tech support, personally. their upgrade policy's nice, too--this was a free upgrade from something like version 1.4 for me. curious? try it. Adobe DNG Converter & Camera Raw 3.7 (Mac OS X)
change in 'auto' adjustment handling
from adobe's website: Camera Raw 3.7 no longer supports per slider auto adjustments. One "Auto" control at the top of the panel now sets the Exposure, Shadows, Brightness, and Contrast sliders to their auto values. [alert admin]

FontDoc 1.1.3 (Mac OS X)
well thought-out and implemented, and very, very useful. and unlike many os x font utilities, never raises the spinning beach ball of death on my under-RAMMED ibook. thanks to the developer. fontdoc saves me hours per month. would be nice to be able to deselect certain fonts (and save some paper) and remove their samples from the array before the doc prints out. but that'd probably be a pain in the neck to implement. and in a way, the beauty of this app is its simplicity. i'm sure that if you email the developer, he'd be happy to send you a link to the version you purchased--or send you the file. nice guy. ethical, too. try that.

this trick of selecting 'none' for server worked for me, too. no idea why the old outgoing mail settings stopped working for me.
