Parallels Desktop 4.0 Build 3540 (Mac OS X)

Terrible...

I found Parallels Desktop 3 to be a good stable performer, and was shocked when I upgraded to v4. The new version is very buggy. It completely hosed my Ubuntu 8.04 VM. My Windows XP VM went through the arduous upgrade process fine, but took some reconfiguration to get back to a normal state. As for speed, v4 is pathetically slow. It takes ages to boot Windows XP, and I have to wait 15-20 seconds for Firefox to load. v3 was infinitely faster. Definitely backup your VMs when prompted, as you will likely want to downgrade to v3 soon after installing v4. Or, like me, you might just jump ship to VMware Fusion. [alert admin]

MAME OS X 0.118 (Mac OS X)

works fine

Works acceptably on Leopard. Note that this comes with no ROMs whatsoever. They must be downloaded separately and extracted into ~/Library/Application Support/MAMEOSX/ROMs [alert admin]

Dash Clipping 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Good!

Works well for a quick-and-dirty hack. A bit rough 'round the edges, but could shape up nicely with a bit of work. [alert admin]

Monolingual 1.3.2 (Mac OS X)

Works well

Monolingual is a simple yet powerful application. It works well for its originally intended purpose: removing superfluous language files to free up disk space. The architecture removal is best left untouched, especially on Intel Macs. You Intel users using Monolingual to remove PPC specific stuff from your system are not very smart. Why are you trying to save a couple of gigs of space on your brand new, EXPENSIVE, Intel machines? Go out and buy an external hard drive! [alert admin]

DivX for Mac 6.0.2 (Mac OS X)

What is this?

The download link is in fact for DivX 6.0.2. Unfortunately: - the .dmg for v6.0.2 is twice as large for v6.0.0 (10MB vs. 5MB). Why? - an actual list of updated components since v6.0.0 cannot be found anywhere. [alert admin]

American-only software

This is why there are Region 0 DVDs which can be played anywhere on Earth, or even in orbit around it. The point here is that these limitations you're running into with Hulu (etc.) exist because of outmoded Intellectual Property laws, which the TV networks and Hollywood embrace and defend in order to maximize profits. You expect a little startup like Hulu to reverse decades of copyright practice? Blame the copyright holders,…

No caution necessary

No, no, no. It's not an alpha release. VLC uses letters for expressing version iterations w/r/t bugfix releases. Version 0.9.9a is the same as saying v0.9.9.1. v0.8.6, for instance, went from 0.8.6a --> 0.8.6b --> all the way to 0.8.6i. It's just a naming convention, and yes it isn't all that logical to use letters, because this kind of confusion inevitably results...

Good Collection

Re: the disk image failing to mount. OS X 10.4 is required. On older systems, the disk image will fail to mount -- not a big deal as the screensavers wouldn't run anyway.

Crashes upon opening ANY kind of movie file

You're using the Intel build, right? It was missing a library when first posted to VideoLAN's mirrors. The package has been fixed, re-download it. Don't forget to trash your Preferences. Always post to VT in triplicate...

Are you kidding me?!

Well, you must not be aware of much then. Security holes are everywhere (y'know those security updates from Apple, Firefox, etc.). Just because a patch is released for an exploit does NOT mean that exploit is public knowledge, in fact that is rarely the case. Shame on M$ for continuing to update its software: those bastards.

Im thinking...

Seriously, it's right there on Google's download page: 128 Kbits/sec minimum Internet connection speed -- 768 Kbits/sec recommended. Upgrade to cable/dsl and then complain about the speed.

Go back to v.8

Wrong. This version (9.0.16.0) is not a public beta, it is a release. The information on VersionTracker is obsolete. See for yourself by actually following the link you posted. Do you see the string 'beta' or 'preview' anywhere on that page?
