Entourage Email Archive X 3.6.1 (Mac OS X)
Will no longer function-Applescript error
I sent some emails to support asking for help. No response yet, but maybe I'm rushing it. I'm falling behind on work because I got involved with this thing. They definitely need support forums! It seemed to work great. But then I processed almost 30,000 messages and EEAX didn't like moving all of them to the trash. So I've been making backups of my database before running EEAX to restore things. I set a filter to process a year's worth instead and that seemed to work. But then I started over again because I wanted to try the FM database. I processed about 20,000 messages and worked great. But then again, I can't move them to the trash because it crashes with another Finder error (which I cannot find right now). I left all messages where the were in the database. So then I wanted to have the Folder Archive as well. So I ran it and got the the "Finder got an error: AppleEvent timed out. (-1712)" error. Sometimes it freezes the Finder too. Now it will not run for Text, Tab-Text nor Archive Folders. I have even set it to search only one folder of 20 messages. Same error. Basically, it's dead. Can anyone offer some advise? Should I reinstall? [alert admin]

Bin-it 1.5.2 (Mac OS X)
I'm using the 1.5.2 demo right now. Looking for an alternative to the now Leopard-incompatible iCan, I am really enjoying Bin-It. I like the Themes feature (I plan to use the themes from iCan). I like the customizable labels. Wish list: 1. A "Smart Empty" function like iCan, where I could delete selected trash items. 2. A "Show Menu Bar Only" and a "Show in Dock Only" choice. I like the menu bar. But I don't want it in the Dock. 3. A capture "Apple+Delete" option. When I use the keyboard shortcut to empty the trash, I get the uninformative OSX dialog. 4. A function to "extact" themes from iCan. [alert admin]

Nikon Scan 4.0.2 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
While in Leopard Limbo-Dig use a Classic Mac
Same crashing here with 10.5.3 on a MacPro. Fortunately, I keep my Blue & White G3 next to the MacPro. I share monitor and keyboard with a switch. So I was able to install Nikon Scan 4 onto the G3 from the CD I got with my Nikon Scanner (Coolscan V). OS 9 seemed to read the CD fine and even updated Nikon Scan. I also have an old Photoshop 7 on that computer. Sure it's a little slow, but it runs and I can copy the files over to the MacPro. I hope this helps. [alert admin]

Intuit Quicken 2006 R6 (Mac OS X)
Unpredictable, yet somewhat dependable
We finally took a leap of faith from Quicken 2000 to Quicken 2007 (R2). It would NOT open the Quicken 2000 file (which it converts automatically) without crashing! Terribly annoying. It could be because we have a whole mess of accounts going back to the 1990's (maybe it choked on it). As I was about to request a refund and go with Moneydance (an alternative to Quicken), I decided to try exporting my Quicken 2000 file, create a brand new blank Quicken 2007 file and import the old into the new Quicken file. It worked. So far, so good. But I do not trust the program and urge users to be cautious--especially with the online banking feature. This feature can really complicate things and it seems Quicken for Mac doesn't handle complicated things. The online support seems weak. Forums were full of frustrated users. I cannot recommend the product with confidence. I would recommend you take advantage of alternatives such as Moneydance. I would have gone with Moneydance if it didn't mishandle my IRA account data (I imported the Quicken file). Like a victim of an abusive relationship, I'm feel that Quicken is a necessary "evil." It's a fantastic program. It's a little tough getting used to in the beginning with the editing controls. However, the export and send to itunes functions are priceless. I like the interface, timers, etc. Playthrough controls are in the right spot. Track-Hunter is the best function for editing songs and speeches. The copy and paste for info that is embedded into MP3's is also very handy. It has a nice pop-up help function and the PDF is easy to search and read. Sometimes I unintentionally end up setting it to gobble up 50GB for a 90min. tape. It seems this "glitch" occurs when I start to record something, stop it and it goes into the Editor (when I forgot to check the button for Pause Recording (and resume on Sound Input). Then I have to quit the program once or twice to re-save as the same name. Weird. But it "fixes" itself after the recording is done and I get my 50GB back. Other than that, it's perfect. I've done 13 cassettes so far and have not had one single crash or major glitch. I hope the developer continues to improve it and make a lot of money from it. It's worth the $30. In fact, it's really worth alot more. Maybe $60 or $80. [alert admin]

VueScan 8.3.22 (Mac OS X)
I'd buy it, but...no solid batch function
Excellent interface. However, we often need to scan 6 images at a time on our flatbed. Without our current Mictrotek Scanmaker software--which is very buggy--we can do an overview, set as many crop/selections around each image and click one button. The software scans each image separately and automatically saves them to disk--or opens them in Photoshop if we like. In my opinion, Hamrick's Vuescan has a weak version of batch scanning as described in the help manual. Basically, for each photo, you need to keep opening the flatbed to place the photo in the same corner to avoid pre-scan steps. Not very efficient. If Hamrick could do this, I'd buy it. [alert admin]

Microtek ScanMaker ScanWizard 7.51 (Mac OS X)
My experience is positive (Microtek 8700)
Back in 2004, their release for OSX was bad. So I was using the old classic version to scan. This one, however, seems to work just as good as the OS9 version. We do lots of batch scanning and the software helps tremendously. I also like the descreening filters--all of which are old, but important features (I'm glad Microtek didn't fiddle around with them). I haven't had the problems mentioned here with 7.5. I cannot say I won't have problems. But so far, so good. I'm using OSX 10.4.3 with 2GB RAM on a G5 Power Mac. I'm using the software with my Microtek 8700 through the Firewire port. Not sure if that makes a difference. [alert admin]

Budget 4.5.4 (Mac OS X)
We use Budget along with Quicken. The "envelope" method used by this program is wonderfully intuitive. It has helped us see exactly how our money is used for personal and business. It is awesome! [alert admin]

Will no longer function-Applescript error-SOLVED
A person from Softhing responded. We went back and forth to make sure I was doing everything right. I was asked if my destination folder was in my "Microsoft User Data" folder. Yes it was. I changed the destination to another location away from that folder and it works.

Just using the demo....I see that Bin-It WORKS on Leopard. iCan does not. I have a registered copy of iCan and have requested updates from the developer with no response. Being that I like to see how much is in the trash before deleting, I'm going to probably need to make a switch to Bin-It. I hope that Bin-It doesn't leave us high and dry like iCan.

DON'T buy Microtek - support is terrible.
Agreed. I'm stuck with an 8700 and Microtek has NO support for it. Try Vuescan. It costs money, but it seems to work (better). http://www.hamrick.com/vsm.html

Quick work-around "not found" errors
1. Turn off scanner. 2. Unplug firewire from computer. 3. Wait 5 seconds. Plug back in. 4. Turn on scanner. 5. Re-launch Scanwizard. So far, so good (and I saved $$$ by not buying another driver).

My experience is positive (Microtek 8700)
Oh, and I should mention that I downloaded v7.5 from the website directly. I didn't see anything that read "7.51" So maybe that makes a difference.

11.1.2 Still no calendar printing! Don't bother.
Try doing your File=Page Setup command first. Then print. It worked perfect for us.
