Virex 6.1 (Mac OS 9)

Withdrawal of earlier support for Virex

I am withdrawing my earlier support for Virex. Recent tests with Sophos on an OS 9.1 iMac protected with Virex 6.1 show that it was infected with 'W32/Netsky-J', 'W32/Rbot-FM' and 'Joke/De bug'. Pity Sophos cannot scan Compact Pro archives. There is some circumstantial evidence that the removal of Virex has increased stability. Virex Definitions 040501 (Mac OS 9)

ftp.nai.com/pub/antivirus/datfiles/mac/virex/

At the time of writing this revised message ftp://ftp.nai.com/pub/datfiles/english/virex/ has not been updated but NAI have informed me that the new file is at ftp.nai.com/pub/antivirus/datfiles/mac/virex/ Neville http://informatics.open.ac.uk/ [alert admin]

NAI to look into this

I have asked NAI to look into this. Initially they removed the May DAT file from their ftp site and replaced it with the February one. They have now updated the site and returned the May file! I am sure they will correct it eventually. Neville http://informatics.open.ac.uk/ [alert admin]

CrushFTP 3.0b23 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

I have spent…

some time playing with Crush and I like its flexibility but the Java appears to be a considerable speed problem on older Macs especially when creating or deleting complex directory structures. It is also more reluctant than other servers to transfer data in active mode when used with a firewall./ [alert admin]

Quid Pro Quo 2.1.3 (Mac OS 9)

I use QPQ…

on a Power Mac 7600/120 with OS 9.1. I have always found it to be, robust, fast, easy to set up and very flexible. There have been periods in the past when neither http://www.socialeng.com/html/download.html nor ftp://ftp.socialeng.com/pub/qpq/ have been online but they have returned later. The lack of support has rarely been a problem. I have found work-arounds for several very minor bugs. I highly recommend QPQ as a medium volume Mac server both for beginners and experienced users. I hope the owners will not withdraw it. I would be grateful if anybody can send me a working email address for Social Engineering. - Neville Hillyer - Telematics Webmaster - Open University - n.hillyer@open.ac.uk [alert admin]

An excellent idea…

beautifully implemented. I suspect that webmasters will find it easier to use BBEdit Lite to replace [mailto:] with [mailto:] across their whole sites. - Neville - n.hillyer@open.ac.uk - http://informatics.open.ac.uk/ [alert admin]

FileType 1.0b2 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

I see I…

am out of tune with several others but I stand by my comments. - The following has encouraged me to write again - "And next time, please don't review the RAM usage only, but rather the whole app." [alert admin]

CreaText 1.4.5 (Mac OS 9)

I am most…

impressed. Unless I am mistaken there are a few common tags missing such as

etc. I have previously used HTML Editor and BBEdit Lite for most of my work but I will try to remember to use CreaText for future XHTML to see how I get on with it. Neville Hillyer - Telematics Webmaster - Open University http://informatics.open.ac.uk/www/ [alert admin]

FileType 1.0b (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Before I discovered…

how much RAM it used I was going to award the maximum. I don't need gadgets that consume 4.6 MB of RAM. This is about 8 times as much as File Typer and 5 times as much as File Buddy. I would probably use it if it consumed less than one MB. - Get your OS from - http://informatics.open.ac.uk/mac/ [alert admin]
