BackupLoupe 1.2 (Mac OS X)

Excellent and promising application

The strength of this product is in its ability to show you exactly what is contained in any TimeMachine backup snapshot. As far as I know, this is the only utility that specifically does this, and for the most part it does it very well. There's a lingering problem in 1.2 with respect to saving scans. I have a large TM set on my MacPro and have managed to crash the application. I anticipate that this is something that will be taken care of in subsequent versions. It's more of an annoyance than anything else, as scanning is not where the failure occurs, only saving the scans, which isn't a deal breaker. 1.2 also added QuickLook support, and I can't wait to see where this utility is headed - Great Start. -- Marc P.S. at 0.99 euros this is more "tipware" than "shareware" and I encourage anyone using this to chip in! Thoth 1.8.4 (Mac OS X)

Checked my records and...

...saw I bought this in early 2002 for $25.00. Regardless, Brian has been supporting this application for more years than than and I've had use of the best Mac newsreader for more than 7 years for only $25. I just sent him another $25 because Thoth is worth it, and maybe 1.9 will appear for real. I understand burnout... rather than criticism, I'd rather pass on encouragement. [alert admin]

TM Error Logger 2.0 (Mac OS X)

Simple app for console-phobic types

I love the console (and have also hacked one of my Macs to display the syslog on my desktop) but for many of my clients, the console and backupd logs are a mystery best avoided. This app makes it easy to see why TM bailed on a backup without having to filter on backupd entries in the console.

This app is mostly harmless.

I do have some cautions on changing the TM interval though. Generally hourly backups are painless. The system keeps track of what needs to be backed up via filesystem events and the standard period of backup events is a good compromise to keep each backup load fairly light.

Extending this period has the downside of

  • making the backup load higher
  • reducing the ability to get back a file that you changed only a few hours earlier
  • increasing the likelihood of the dreaded Time Machine requires deep traversal when the FSevents are corrupted or out of sync with the last backup.

Forms To Go 4.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Version 4. raises the bar!

I've used Forms To Go since version 1.something and have always been very pleased with the developer's excellent support and obvious desire to make this a stellar product. Version 4 adds the ability to reuse the original form html page as the error target, fully preserving all form entries. While his sounds like not a big thing, prior versions required a separate page for intelligent form error handling. This means only one common page to manage. If you do any web development requiring custom PHP form handling (sorry, I haven't used the ASP or PERL scripts) Forms To Go will have a place in your workflow! [alert admin]

SimpleViewer iPhoto Plugin 1.0 (Mac OS X)

More than advertised...

This is a nifty tool that can be very useful for web developers. iPhoto integration is excellent. The free version places a tiny link back to the developers site in the generated swf file, however there is a pro version available for a reasonable $45 that allows this to be eliminated and adds more functionality. Normally a version 1.0 product has some rough edges, but I didn't see anything amiss in my tests. The Postcard feature is slightly. Digging into it, there is a bug in either the image export or in the xml file generation. The images were exported with the original file names in iPhoto, while the xml control file was looking for files names photo-0.jpg, photo-2.jpg, etc. I renamed the pictures (R-Name - look for it here in VersionTracker) and it also ran flawlessly. The free version of SimpleViewer is very useful for anyone who wants a fast and easy way to implement a gallery ot more in their personal web site. For a number of my clients I often get requests for solid, and easy to implement photo gallery, and the paid version is a restriction-free solution that I plan to use in the future, and after testing the free version tonight, I didn't hesitate for a second to purchase the SimpleViewer Pro upgrade. This will save me time, reduce client costs, and pay for itself the first time I use it in a commercial project. [alert admin]

Big Kahuna Reef 1.2 (Mac OS X)

Incredibly addictive, solid game!

I got to play with this before it was released, and the beta was solid as a rock. Reflexive has a winner here. Big Kahuna Reef is a time sponge as TDiaz noted, but a challenging, fun time sponge. This is indeed a commercial quality product and at a shareware price it is an awesome value. Reflexive, which produces mainly PC games, should be commended for supporting the Mac with this product! Blizzard Diablo II 1.11b (Mac OS X)

Stil not quite there

The LOD 1.11b patch - availiable from the same link above, still takes my 10.4.2 box down. It pays for a while then the audio stops and it freezes. Then it the audio pays a bit more but it's hung. When the audoi finally dies entirey it's reboot time. I'm going to try a fresh install using the OS X installer from their site and see if I can''t get this puppy to work. [alert admin]

Blizzard Diablo II 1.11 (Mac OS X)

Almost Right

It lets you host and join with 1.11 PC LAN clients... It doesn't let you do that for too long - this release (1.11 carbon LOD patch) crashes during gameplay consistently under OS X 10.3.9 and 10.4.2. Blizzard will probably patch the patch soon though, and 1.10b is still pretty solid. [alert admin]

DreamCatcher 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Incredibly Useful

This is a well designed and extremely useful tool for anyone working with web design. While the major web tools all have a spell checker built in, I don't remember to always prrof my sites... This lets me do whole sites in a matter of minutes... pointing me to the offenses I've overlooked. Thank you! [alert admin]

coconutBattery 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Not ready for the Pismo G3

As with all battery reporting tools except the BatteryInfo widget by Ben Barnett, this one only recognizes a single Pismo battery and ony if it is in the right side bay, which is typically occupied by the CD/DVD drive. It is cool, and I hope the developer adds support for the viable dual battery capable PowerBooks like my Pismo (which is running Tiger very well) and the Panther limited Lombard. [alert admin]

Still doesn't handle invisible files

Hmm.... just upgraded to 3.2.1, opened a client site - saw no invisibles - enabled View -> Show Hidden Files - and presto, they all appeared. This would sort of tell me that there is no bug... or perhaps your site doesn't have invisible files. -- Marc

NOTE: This version is for Purchase

Definitely worth the price - and then some! With my family being less than kind to DVD media I now archive all our DVD's... not having to buy one damaged disk a second time covers the cost of RipIt... and it simply works!

Serial Number

As a person who actually bought a license and received a serial number, I am very happy to see that Brian is still providing updates and support for this product. The unfortunate truth is that the piracy to paid ratio was too high. Brian's decision to stop selling new licenses may not make much sense, but I can understand his frustration at seeing his software not only being used on the newsgroups, but also being…

Poor support, bad validation - RTFM

I agree fully - the original poster really couldn't have tried FTG seriously, as it is an awsome tool. The PHP support has been evolving very well, although I do optimize the code afterward (I was a sw eng. in a previous life and am a bit anal about tight code). My workflow for everything from simple through complex mailto forms always includes FTG and I would be burning a lot of hours without it.…

Cannot even connect.

Umm... the VT data states 10.3 or higher which sort of hints at 10.4. Since 10.4 is the current released OS and has been for a long time to release a version 1.0 product that WILL NOT work under 10.4 is somewhat silly. I tried it and while it didn't crash it did not connect from 10.4.5. Thank you for clarifying that the problem is on your end and not mine. rm -rdf /Applications/Sitemap\ Thing.app Too bad... it…

Quickbooks

The biggest issue I have with the business side of my business is the doubl work of accounting in QuickBooks and project management in Studiometry. I've been a user since ver 1, and the lack of any mechanism to export data in a format edible by QuickBooks is my only gripe with the product. I could care less about taking QB back into Studiometry, as the latter will remain the master data feed. Tom, if you're…
