Hordes of Orcs 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Game rocks

I bought this at Macworld, after playing the demo for a little while. Now, my kids and I can't get enough of it. It's pretty addictive. Trying different strategies of tower placement is part of the fun. It's not a "play all day" kind of game, like Civilization, Diablo, or Warcraft. Each round moves along quickly. Well worth the money. Play the demo, and see for yourself. Oh, and for the person who complained about the "click on an orc, and lose the tower placement," I agree—that's annoying. Try selecting what to build using the keyboard instead; A for arrow tower, W for wall, etc. It's faster. [alert admin]

Delicious Library 1.6.2 (Mac OS X)

So slow as to be nearly worthless

It crawls, it hangs, it makes molasses seems speedy. It's hard to comprehend what the program must be doing that makes it so unbelievably slow. And I'm not just referring to scanning books, or entering books. Typing text is slow. Scrolling is slow. Scrolling a window with a dozen books in it is SLOW. I'm running a dual 1.8 G5 with 2 gigs of memory and lots of disks, and it's still slow. I can't believe they thought it was a good idea to release this software. Until there is a signficant speed-up (or they come up with a faster way to enter a bunch of books, like with a text file full of ISBN numbers, maybe), there's no real point in buying it. After using it for three months, I cannot recommend buying it. [alert admin]

StickyBrain 4.0.3 (Mac OS X)

Fabulous

I use this application all the time. I dump any text I want to save, anywhere, into it. When the 4.x version came out, I updated without any trouble; I just followed the instructions. I find I use it even more often, now that I can easily back it up to .Mac at work and restore it from my home machine (and vice versa). I've tried demos of some of the competition. Nothing worked as well for me as StickyBrain. [alert admin]

Notebook Report Writer 1.2 (Mac OS X)

Seems only fair

I made a comment complaining about the cut-and-paste not working. It was fixed quickly, so it seemed only fair to try it out again. Cut-and-paste works now. After trying it for awhile, I've decided that I'm not the target market, but I do think it's an interesting idea for a work processor, and if you have or are a younger student, you might want to check it out. There is no…

better PIM on the market today, which is all the more surprising, considering Palm Desktop is free! It's fast, with a well laid-out UI. Don't change what works! [alert admin]

Kodak EasyShare 2.1 (Mac OS X)

Not nearly as…

useful as iPhoto, and somewhat harder to use. After installing it for my Kodak camera, I uninstalled it after a couple of days of use. It does handle automatic emailing from the camera, but I find that I don't use that feature. YMMV. [alert admin]
