Lugaru 1.01 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

an amazing first release

haven't bought it yet...other priorities...but for an initial offering this game looks great. nice to see the dev is active on his message boards. i too am finding it difficult to get used to the controls, though i think "contextual" is a great way to go. i would LOVE this game to work with my Gravis Eliminator...especially getting force feedback when your character is hit. better character models would also be nice as an option for those with more high-end Macs.... Dragonflyz Screensaver 1.0 (Mac OS X)

bzzzz

being a big fan of dragonflies (i have one tattooed on my back), i downloaded this one right away to try it in "free" mode.

the style is typical of Skyrocket's other screen savers—fairly well rendered, stable, most functions are available without needing to pay. i'm impressed with the quality of the dragonflies, and while the wings could be more transparent, i think that might cause them to disappear completely over a busier background, so this seems to strike a good balance.

but also true to the other screen savers, the behaviors are a little odd and a bit too repetitive. Dragonflies don't wobble in flight, but they do change altitude. and even though they do tend to fly in straight lines, perhaps some large curves and turns could really add to the overall visual effect.

don't get me wrong—i think this is a good 1.0 release, and this will be the first Skyrocket screen saver i will keep and register. i don't expect this to achieve "Marine Aquarium" realism, however i think some cool improvements could be made. lose the wobbling, add some dips/climbs to the side-views and some curved paths to the top-views, and i'll change my rating to a 5!

BarbaBatch 4.0 (Mac OS X)

whoo that's a bit pricey

puts it into the "professional" league...at almost $400, out of the range of the casual user. [alert admin]

wow!

this really blows away "Parachute". i had a little trouble getting used to using the scroll wheel instead of directional keys or gamepad, but i'm really impressed at how this baby works. and it's free! sound isn't supported, so i had to make the little boops and beep noises myself for the full Game Boy experience. great work though!!! Hydromancy 1.2 (Mac OS X)

actually like the 3D effect so far...

the attempt at a simulated 3D look is really not that all bad. sure it's not polished yet, but it's a significant step closer to the ultimate goal .... a $3000+ lava lamp. [alert admin]

iVolume 1.6 (Mac OS X)

recompression always degrades further

davidc: you are correct, any time you re-compress audio or even video to a lossy format (like MP3), you lose additional data. that's why there's no good solution to removing the DRM from iTunes store AAC files; your only option is an uncompressed AIFF, which will sound terrible if recompressed. now if your files were compressed with FLAC, that is a lossless format and would not degenerate significantly if converted to MP3. however the FLAC format is not playable in iTunes or on the iPod. whenever i loan my home-brew music CDs to friends, i always tell them not to rip the tracks as the source files were already compressed. PS. i love my iVolume. if only Toast or iTunes preserved the volume setting when burning, that would be something. [alert admin]

BelchX 1.2 (Mac OS X)

at long last!

my company's been waiting anxiously for this upgrade. now we can complete our transition to OS X. out of necessity we had already updated a few Macs, so as a temporary fix we made those users drink a can of diet soda every half hour. the side affect was that we lost productivity due to their extremely frequent bathroom breaks. but no longer! with fifty Macs set to short intervals, it reminds me of summer nights at the ol' pond behind my house when i was a kid. *sniff* it's a beautiful thing. feature suggestion: have it select a random belch from belch01.aiff, belch02.aiff, etc. up to the number of sounds in the file. FM Pro required

plaintiger, the requirements are for FileMaker Pro 5.0 or higher. the author could do better explaining that they are FileMaker Pro documents.

Panther Has This Feature Already

if you want to invoke the screen saver security on a manual basis, run Keychain Access and select "Show Status in Menu Bar" from the View menu. then you get a menu that allows you to "Lock Screen" and more....

Another developer showws their ignorance

this isn't the first time that a developer has made a game in this style and called it MahJongg. ever play Hoyle Board Games by Sierra Entertainment? that far predates this one. i agree with the other comment—if you're a MahJongg purist then this is not for you, but for the rest of us ignorant, unwashed commoners this is much more entertaining than the original. cut the man some slack, jack.
