Stellarium 0.8.2 (Mac OS X)
Reaches the end of "loading constellations" or whatever and stops. Quit, force quit, tab out are all to no avail. This was a wonderful program before the quality control went out the window. [alert admin]

TextWrangler 2.1.3 (Mac OS X)
Nice, but broken on 10.4.7 / Intel Core Duo (MBP)
2.1.3 hangs when trying to open files via SFTP, requiring a force quit. Works just fine when using Fugu 1.2 as a helper app. [alert admin]

Rax 2.0 (Mac OS X)
Finally... a universal binary, interface overhaul, and a limited but interesting ability to host MIDI files as well as AudioUnits. Check out the demo tracks... you will be impressed with what Rax can do with just Apple DLS synths and matrix reverb. Add a sequencer and some spiffy AUs like Automat and the Expert Sleepers set, and Rax would be shareware music nirvana. As it is, it does all it used to do and a bit more, but now on your Core Duo. :D It also seems to be less of a CPU hog than version 1.2.x. Kudos to plasq -- I had thought this was abandonware. Second Life 1.10.1.0 (Mac OS X)
Since 1.6, SL has become more sluggish and bloated with every patch. The application bundle has gone from around 15 megabytes to over 90. It runs slower now on my shiny new MacBook Pro than it used to on my then-top-of-the-line G3 iBook back in the day. Most of the time, you can't move your avatar at all due to latency, which can easily rise into 6500 msec roundtrips (this is on a good DSL line with no other traffic on it). Performance is absolutely dreadful and seems to be more network- than CPU- or GPU-bound. Looking at CPU usage, SL is pegging core #1 and strangely does not seem to be aware that core #2 even exists. What's even stranger is that if you run SL on the *same hardware* under Windows XP, the difference in performance and playability is night and day. I think it's time Linden Labs stopped making excuses. Instead, hire and fire some people, do whatever it takes, just make the Mac viewer stop sucking. Please. [alert admin]

Apple DVD Player 4.6.5 (Mac OS X)
I fixed the problem this update is supposed to solve simply by trashing the preferences file. I ran the update, naively thinking it would prevent future problems. Now DVD Player doesn't play any DVDs at all. VLC plays them just fine. [alert admin]

Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos 1.18 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
The updater is a Classic application?
I downloaded the 1.18 updater using Safari, but OS X 10.4.2 thinks this is a Classic application. I don't have Classic installed. Is this a mistake, or does this updater really require Classic (when the original installer does not)? [alert admin]

Application Enhancer 1.5.1 (Mac OS X)
Apps crashing, Finder crashes and loops trying to relaunch itself. Yikes. [alert admin]

Rax is all it's cracked up to be and more, although it still has problems with erratic CPU usage and some soft synths, including some that are listed as being compatible on the Granted web site. The docs are just okay and support seems to be non-existent. I hope these guys are still in business, since I liked it well enough to buy a copy. For what Rax is and does, you can't beat the price. Automat 0.1.7 (Mac OS X)
Pros: it's free! Modulation all over the place, not terribly CPU intensive. Cons: All sounds sound the same, absolutely no character, not as cool as Buzzer 2 yet. But it's free! [alert admin]

There is nothing wrong with Camino. No, it's not quite as fast as Safari. Yes, it is quite fast enough for most purposes, renders like Firefox without the bloat and custom widgets... definitely has a place on my desktop.

Better but still not quite the equal of Excel 10.1.6 ![]()

Uh... this is a Java application. Of course it will be slower than Excel. Since Excel is not yet built for Intel, however, the difference in performance between it and NeoOffice is much less noticeable on Macintel.

If you want Camino to work with Gmail's full feature set, simply spoof Firefox as your user agent using CamiTools. Works like a charm. I've never had an issue with it.

Well... it's a text editor. It's about the power of plain text. If you want to work with RTFD, you need a word processor. For historical, and other reasons, text editors and word processors do not provide the same functionality. Not even the mighty Emacs likes to work with formatted text, and word processors generally make poor code editors.

In the Macintosh world, as in the Unix world, FTP support for text editors typically comes from... FTP programs. Smultron works very well with Cyberduck or Fugu for this purpose. Next best thing to a secure shell for remote editing.

iTunes has had gapless playback forever. Go in your preferences and check Crossfade Playback and set the fade to 0 seconds. Gapless. Enjoy.

Interface revisions and DSP upgrades are showing promise. There turns out to be more here than initially meets the eye, as a friend and I discovered after hooking up a MIDI controller to this thing using Automat's wicked MIDI Learn feature. We were able to coax a wide range of dope noises from this thing. Check it out.
