AirRadar 1.2.1 (Mac OS X)

Price increases 100% since Macworld review

It was only a few months ago that this software was freeware, and then ten bucks, and now twenty bucks. What happened to the deflation we keep hearing about? [alert admin]

WireTap Pro 1.3.2 (Mac OS X)

Ambrosia is the real audio hijack....

I have had no end to problems with Wiretap Pro on my Mac (OS X 10.4). The app suddenly forgot that I was registered, which meant chasing it down with Ambrosia. Once that problem was fixed, it would inexplicably occasionally insert the watermark into the recording. Like another poster, it asks me every time I start the app if I want to upgrade - but no upgrade is available. But most frustrating is that it's impossible to use the preferences: it sends my machine into paralysis. In the past, it would hang for twenty seconds; at some point, though, it just started to hang and hang. I have to wonder if one of the recent updates actually introduced bugs. Or is that too cynical? I paid for this software. Given the problems, I certainly wouldn't 'upgrade' to Studio, and would recommend that readers look elsewhere for a Mac audio solution. [alert admin]

Apple Security Update 2008-006 (Mac OS X)

Causes Safari 3.1.2 to hang requiring force quit

This update seems to cause Safari 3.1.2 to hang upon loading some pdfs, requiring a forced quit. Hangs are unpredictable but frequent. After installation, numerous permission needed correcting, which did not mitigate the Safari problem. Neither did clearing the Safari preferences plist. Warning: consult the message boards before you install! [alert admin]

VueScan 8.4.71 (Mac OS X)

Poor support from Hamrick @ Vuescan - beware

Let this be a lesson to would-be VueScan buyers. I purchased Vuescan standard edition in 2007 ($40) and upgraded within the year allowed. But the update caused Vuescan to behave unpredictably and often crash my Mac running OS X / 10.4.11. After struggling (and numerous hours invested) I finally sent a detailed description of the problem to Hamrick, as he asked. Without diagnosing the problem, Hamrick suggested I download the latest version - 8.4.85. Problem solved; works fine again. But now Hamrick is charging me ANOTHER $40, refusing to allow me to use the remedy version without the watermark on every scan in the trial version. I've already paid $40 once, and won't pay it again. I first asked to go back to the earliest version that I downloaded and forget about the upgrade. Nothing doing, he said – archived older versions would take "hundreds of megabytes" he said. AND HE'S THE DEVELOPER! So Hamrick wants another $40 to upgrade to the professional version. Let this be a lesson: When you deal with an individual developer as opposed to a corporation (such as LaserSoft and it's Silverfast scanning software), they are free to dismiss your claims and turn their back. For my $40 invested in VueScan I can only use the trial version now. Buyer beware. Try Silverfast. Mark Elliot [alert admin]
