Ecoute 1.3 (Mac OS X)
As to what the previous poster very validly took issue with, the developer did acknowledge that his approach was inappropriate and removed the offending code (see the same MacUpdate thread linked to in the the previous post--you'll have to go back a little for the related comments and developer's statement). I've been using Ecoute for a few months, and I greatly prefer it over iTunes for listening to my music due to its lightweight construction and stability. I also quite like some of its features like automatic retrieval of album art and lyrics, global hotkeys, and desktop/menu bar controllers. [alert admin]

VideoVangelist 2.0.1 (Mac OS X)
This is one of the worst written apps I've ever tried. Version 1 never worked anywhere close to properly, and now the dev wants an upgrade fee for version 2? This has got to be some kind of joke. Avoid this app and this developer like the plague. [alert admin]

SlidePad 1.2.0 (Mac OS X)
First off, I do agree that this app is overpriced and offers little or nothing to recommend it over sidenote. However, I don't think it's fair to call it stolen. There are dozens of applications in many categories that do similar things. How many web browsers and desktop email clients are there? How many word processors and office suites with similar functionality? There's nothing wrong with taking an idea and trying to improve upon it. It's called competition. This application may not be good value (or even good), but, as long as it uses its own original code, I hardly think it's fair to call it a rip-off. [alert admin]

4Media DVD Ripper 5.0.36.0303 (Mac OS X)
Another one indeed. This crap pops up at an incredible rate. This is the second one in the last three days. I noticed that MacUpdate has removed all the Aimersoft/iSkysoft crap that was on there. I wish VT would do the same, along with the clones, like this one, that are so easy to spot. [alert admin]

uSeesoft DVD Ripper 1.3.1.0 (Mac OS X)
The language and description here is awfully reminiscent of Aimersoft/iSkysoft. I'd advise caution until there's some confirmation on where this came from. [alert admin]

Glims 1.0 beta 13 (Mac OS X)
Excellent little plugin. I've decided not to even bother updating Saft again, as this now covers everything I used it for. I've never had any stability issues with Glims--as sometimes occurs with InputManager plugins--except for the Safari 4 beta crash, which, to the great credit of Glims' developers, was addressed the same day. Thank you very much for this add-on. [alert admin]

Keywurl 1.4b3 (Mac OS X)
Even with this new beta update, I can't get it work properly in Safari 4b1. It comes up in the preferences and I can add search engines, but the expansions do not work at all. Anyone else had this trouble with Safari 4? [alert admin]

Apple Safari 4.0b (Mac OS X)
This beta is very nice overall. It's noticeably faster than any other browser I've tried. I know that speed is very difficult to measure, but I put this through a SunSpider Javascript benchmark test along with a pre-release build of Camino 2 (same Gecko branch as Firefox 3.0.x) and the latest beta of Firefox 3.1. Safari 4 came up over 3.5 times faster than Camino and over 1.5 times faster than Firefox. It also achieves 100 on the Acid 3 Test. The interface is lovely--minimal and functional. I'm undecided on the tabs at the top of the screen, but one con is that I keep accidentally moving the window when I want to drag a tab. Sadly, Safari still lacks single-window mode (though it's still available as a hidden preference) and session saving. Fortunately, Glims was updated quickly to work with version 4, filling in these two gaps (among others). Another essential add-on, the current beta of 1Password is compatible. I also recommend the Click-to-Flash WebKit plugin and GlimmerBlocker proxy ad blocker for anyone interested in content blocking. Neither of these involve input managers and both work perfectly well with Safari 4. [alert admin]

Nisus Writer Pro 1.2 (Mac OS X)
Why Nisus Writer Pro is my new favourite OS X word processor: It’s fast, lightweight, and easy to learn and use, but is still rich in features; it has a lovely interface that allows easy access and customization of the toolbar and sidebar; keyboard shortcuts can easily be assigned for almost any action; imports other document formats extremely accurately (at least of version 1.2, though I hear there were some issues prior to this); it’s extremely stable; uses .rtf as its default file format instead of a unique and nontransferable file format (like Mariner Write or Mellel); it’s backed up by excellent support—I received very quick and friendly responses to a bug report regarding an issue that turned out to be my (or rather Unsanity’s) bad. There’s no substitute for stability in a word processor. The fact is that Nisus runs extremely smoothly and handles all aspects of document formatting and management perfectly in a nearly universally compatible format. There are plenty of good options for word processing on OS X, but Nisus Writer Pro, in my opinion, is leading the pack. Also, Nisus Software offers excellent educational pricing, making this app accessible for students without a lot of disposable income. [alert admin]

CrossOver Games 7.1.1 (Mac OS X)
Apparently, this application's developer, Codeweavers, made some kind of bet and lost, so they're giving this and Crossover Pro away for free today only. Go to their website. [alert admin]

Crashes Safari in 32-bit mode under 10.6
I'm pretty sure there's now a beta version of PithHelmet that works in 64-bit Safari. Check the developer's website.

I'm sorry to hear you paid for a Saft upgrade because you weren't sure of the status of Glims :) I think it would be better if the Glims developers put more information on their website regarding the status of upcoming Glims releases, etc. As it stands, this information is available on their Facebook fan page. They had status updates and pre-release builds for Glims for 64-bit Safari on this fan page for weeks before…

Should Saft-users switch to Glims?
I'm a former Saft user that switched to Glims. The only major feature I can think of off the top of my head that Saft offers that Glims doesn't is ad blocking. However, since I use GlimmerBlocker, this doesn't affect me. All told, their feature sets are very similar. I prefer some things in Glims, in particular its awesome drop-down search suggestions. The problem with Saft as I see it is that it doesn't provide…

What's up with the HandBrake comparison? HandBrake is intended to transcode DVD (or other) sources to MPEG-4 files. While DVD Remaster does offer some conversion options of this sort, its primary function is to remaster and compress DVDs so they can be burned onto DVD-Rs. HandBrake offers no similar functionality.

Glims often has little information on its website. However, becoming a fan of Glims for Safari on Facebook will allow you access to pre-release builds as well as information on the status of new versions of Glims. They had info and development builds posted there for weeks before the official release of 1.0b21

does not find itunes db + no support
Two things: 1) Under the application menu, there is an option to choose another iTunes library. Pick that and direct it to your library. 2) I haven't contacted the developer myself, but on the app's web page, there's a tiny little Support link at the bottom of the page (it's actually just a mailto link) to contact the developer. I hope this helps. I find this app infinitely preferable to the monstrously bloated iTunes for simple listening or…

just done a gift to my hardisk
Yeah, you have one (1) comment on all of Version Tracker--this suspicious sounding five-star review. If you are associated with the developer, you should be honest about it.

HandBrake works much much better and is FREE
HandBrake is great, but RipIt comes in handy in two situations where HandBrake comes up short. First, since HB uses VLC to decrypt DVDs, it can only handle CSS encrypted discs and can fail on discs with more advanced copy protection. RipIt will handle these discs, then you can feed the unprotected VIDEO_TS folder to HB for encoding. The second case is if you want to make a copy of a DVD to another DVD.…
