SvnX 0.9.6.3 (Mac OS X)
This free product is something I use at work on a daily basis. I got tired of the svn support within XCode and have switched to using SvnX entirely instead. While there are a few instances where I've had to resort to the svn command line to fix conflicts, etc., for 95% of my work this GUI is perfect! Thanks for writing it! [alert admin]

Macromedia Flash Player 8.0.22 (Mac OS X)
The installer actually worked! That's much better than the Macromedia Shockwave installer which spins forever (same company - that's why I mention it). Anyway, seems to work. [alert admin]

iAAPL 1.7.1 (Mac OS X)
Pretty good program - nice and small on the screen. However, it's a bit of a pain to switch between stocks - would be nice to at the very minimum have a keyboard shortcut to switch between stocks.. Or even nicer would be an alternate view option which could show several stocks at once. I imagine that most people would be more interested in tracking *several* stocks rather than just one. Also, this is probably overkill, but it might be nice to allow for alerts when a stock value goes above or below a certain threshold. [alert admin]

LaunchBar 4.0.1 (Mac OS X)
This app is one of the most indispensable apps on my computer. It's amazing what a time saver it is to just type the name of a program, address book entry, bookmark, system preference pane, etc. rather than hunting for it in the filesystem. I even used launch bar to open up this versiontracker entry - command space to bring up launch bar, type versiontracker, then hit space to get a search field, type in launchbar and hit return. Pretty amazing. I really hope that Tiger's Spotlight doesn't kill this app. From what I've seen of Spotlight, launchbar will still be faster and more useful for some things.. But they *are* pretty similar apps. Don't give up on launch bar - perhaps integrate the Spotlight technology for the underlying search engine, but provide a cleaner and quicker interface than Apple's? [alert admin]

uControl 1.4.6 (Mac OS X)
Handy tool, but some problems... ![]()

This is a handy tool for remapping certain keys. I have an ergonomic split keyboard, but it was designed for Windows use, not Mac. Therefore, the positions of the control, alt, and windows keys (control, option, and command on the Mac) needed to be remapped. The tool performs as advertised with two caveats. Every time I log in or restart the computer, the key mapping doesn't take effect until I open up the ucontrol control panel. So I've added ucontrol to my login items to make the process more automatic. Second, I had some issues remapping the caps lock key to perform as a control key. This worked fine in previous versions of ucontrol, but in this version the GUI wouldn't allow me to do the mapping. I ended up having to open up the prefs file for ucontrol and mess around with it until I got something which worked. I'd appreciate it if the developer(s) could fix a few of these issues. By the way - anyone have luck using it with 10.3.9? I'm still on 10.3.8 because the last OS update broke ucontrol for a while... [alert admin]

OmniOutliner Pro 3.0 (Mac OS X)
As far as I'm concerned, OmniOutliner Pro is one of the most useful Apps on Mac OS X. If you haven't tried this App, you're really missing out!
Very handy - I'm using it for tons of things such as:
- keeping to do lists
- tracking serial numbers
- writing documentation for people
- note taking
I must have ten to twenty OmniOutliner Pro files in use already - and you can even link them together by dragging aliases from one to the other. So if you have related lists, you can click an attachment in one list to jump to the other. The control over styles with the floating style sheet is simply amazing - very innovative! Also, the dynamic HTML export is amazing - you can even fold the rows up and down!
Anyhow - it's hard to extoll all of the virtues in this small space - head over to the Omnigroup website for some nice screenshots and ideas of what you can do with this app.
Check it out today! [alert admin]Post a comment | More Info | 1 of 1 users found this helpful

TextWrangler 2.0 (Mac OS X)
I'm *very* glad to see that Barebones decided to make this a freeware product instead of payware. With competition such as SubEthaEdit (free for educational use, cheap otherwise), TextWrangler just wasn't going to make it as a pay only app. This is basically a new version of BBEdit Lite and is an excellent and *very* fast text editor - works well with large files. I'll have a tough time deciding whether to use this or SubEthaEdit. Excellent documentation by the way.. [alert admin]

StuffIt Expander 9.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Doesn't work for me at all - just bounces for a while and then times out and sits there. OS X 10.3.7 on a G5. This app used to be great back in 'the day', but it has really gone down hill. Of course, that seems to happen to most apps once they become cross platform - guess they hired too many Windows programmers. ;-) Besides, who wants to pay for this thing when other methods of archiving such as DMG and zip are free and actually work? Using this program is like taking a trip back to the early 90's. Its user interface is horrid by today's standards, and I don't just mean in terms of looks (although it is fairly ugly). Difficult to use - the layout tools are much more difficult than using something like OmniGraffle for example, many things are non-intuitive or can only be accomplished if done in a 'special' way - ie - other ways that seem like they should work don't. We're using this tool for reporting purposes (connecting to another database), and that functionality is 'barely' there. It looses the mapping of fields from the external to the internal database *every* time you add a new field which is a real pain. Also, if you have the slightest syntax error in your SQL (a word spelled wrong, etc), it will hard crash immediately. Hard crashes (unexpected quits) often cause the file to become corrupted and as soon as you try to open a corrupted file, it crashes again. So I end up making a new copy of the file *every* time I make any changes just so I don't loose everything and have to start over from scratch (which has happened several times). In short - this program sucks. They need to spend some serious effort bringing it up to date both in terms of the interface and in terms of robustness. I wish there was a better solution out there, but this is the best I could find for now. Not recommended - but use if you have to. [alert admin]

"If the Finder is Carbon and PF is Cocoa, then why is PF slower than the Finder?" Cocoa applications aren't necessarily faster than Carbon, in fact, I would expect them to be a little slower in general. Cocoa is an object oriented framework which has many benefits for the developer in terms of ease of use, but not necessarily speed.

Here are my suggestions: 1. The Help button at the top right shouldn't be all the way on the edge - and why not use one of the standard '?' icons? 2. When clicking on button such as 'History', the main window closes and is replaced with the new window - seems non-standard and a bit strange. 3. It would be nice if the 'Choose Drill...' option remembered the last drill used and selected it…

It's called "Terrabrowser" because it is a front end to the "Terra Server" which Microsoft runs. If you have a problem with the name, complain to them!
