Delicious Library 2.0 (Mac OS X)

Lots of glitches

Decided to give it a try (previous 1.6.6 user) and immediately got a warning from the program that it would run very slow because I was running 10.5.2. Yet when I go to Software Update my software is current and no updates are available. Finder-Get Info shows 10.5.3 so go figure. Program imported my old library fine but failed to import from another application. Wanted to find out about the upgrade so I clicked the link from WITHIN THE PROGRAM that says to "Purchase Online". I got routed to http://www.chronopath.com/store which is a domain that is for sale. I'd wait for the update as there are lots of little glitches like these. [alert admin]

Episode Pro 5.0 (Mac OS X)

Great product, great support!

In what has got to be an industry first, version 5 of Episode is a free upgrade! While the new feature set in version 5 is small as compared to version 4, it still is a free upgrade which is amazing. Program converts most all forms of video (does not convert swf files) into other formats (download, web, divx, et al). I've had problems with the streaming conversions in that they don't seem to really be streaming versions (no preload). The default conversions work OK, but if you tweak them the conversions are much better. Version 4 tends to ignore image size so you have to make sure you click the option to keep the same size (or the conversion gets messed up). Version 5 seems to have the same problem. Overall this converts video quickly. I find it better than Squeeze and other compression programs. More importantly, it is supported and updated whereas other programs (Cleaner for example) is rarely updated. [alert admin]

Hoyle Card Games 2008 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Great program

I've played this program in all previous versions, but had to quit with Leopard (no classic support). So when the MacOS X version finally came out, I got it right away. It plays great, and is very similar to previous versions. Graphics are a little slow on older machines but it still plays smoothly. Hoyle Card Games has all the classic games plus is the source of many games not available from anywhere else (Canasta for one). Program options for game play, card decks, backgrounds, et al are all user definable so you can set it up to what you like for play. Face Maker (for your image) does not let you import any photos and instead you have to use a supplied face or create a "cartoon type" image for you. It would have been far better to allow the import of a jpeg image, but this is a very minor point. Overall a great way to relax and have fun playing cards. [alert admin]

SilverFast SE (Epson) Perfection 6.5.5r5 (Mac OS X)

Interface

I concur with other comments that the interface is extremely cumbersome. It is a good program but the interface is the weakest part. It also cannot save files as JPEG that is readable by most programs (Preview included). The program installation fails to follow Mac standards and sticks a file in the root directory of the hard drive, and will modify your dock without asking. The developer knows this but chooses not to change it, which is an arrogance that makes the product less appealing. At higher scan resolutions (48-bit) many of the options disappear--something not mentioned in the documentation. In short, it is a good program that takes a lot of trial and error to figure out. It is invasive of you system, so check for files after installation. Use TIFF for maximum compatibility with other programs. [alert admin]

SWF'n Slide Pro 1.026 (Mac OS X)

Good but with limits

Not bad for a quick, basic slide show. No way to insert pages, making reordering a pain. You need to have already determined the sequence to make it easy. Program crashes big time when importing a folder of lots of images. I don't know the program limits (nothing listed in the documentation or their web site), but I have a folder of 275 images and it will crash everytime--sometimes so catastrophically (memory leaks) as to crash MacOS X (10.5.1). I'm running on a MacBook Pro machine with 3gb RAM, so I have a very capable machine, yet SWF 'n Slide Pro is very sluggish with even a few images. More than 50 and it becomes a dinosaur.

So if you want to create a small, simple slide show, the program is fine. Large slide shows are not feasible (at least for me). Program stability is definitely an issue. [alert admin]

FontAgent Pro 4.0 (Mac OS X)

4.0 or 3.3?

Developer link (http://www.insidersoftware.com/FA_pro_osx.php) says: FontAgent Pro 3.3 for Mac OS X Title of the VersionTracker info is Version 4. So somewhere there is a disconnect, or Version 4 isn't up yet. [alert admin]

Eudora 8.0.0b1 (Mac OS X)

Needs lots of work....

This actually applies to b2 which VersionTracker hasn't listed yet, but is readily available from Macupdate and other sites. b1 crashed when trying to import my Eudora 6 files. b2 does nothing now. Nada. I select Tools-Import-Everything and then NEXT. Then nothing happens. I think it is supposed to display programs to import form, but it doesn't. A review of the console shows a bunch of errors in the migration.js file, but there is no way to fix this. There is no way to RESET everything and start over. I've done several hard drive searches and who knows where they hide the preferences file. It is not to be found in the Library that I can find. I give up. Loved this program from the beginning, but it lags so far behind the MacOS capabilities that I'm just about ready to switch to Mail and give up forever on Eudora. [alert admin]

Serene Saver 2 HD 2.2.5 (Mac OS X)

No major problems...

I've used this now for several months on a Macbook Pro, a Quicksilver G4, and an G3 iMac. None have had any problems except at time the screensaver starts hogging processing power (on the older machines). Then I use the contexual menu to turn it off and everything works fine again after I restart it. The pictures are great and quite a variety. My family likes this screensaver. [alert admin]

Does not work even with Tiger

It took 4 contacts with Roxio to get past the "generic blurb" automatic responses and get a real tech support person. The response was that Popcorn 3 no longer works with many file formats, including .flv (Popcorn 2 works fine). Popcorn 3 does not give any hint of format issues and actually says it will convert the file, but just hangs forever with FORCE QUIT the only option. Terrible program and not worth the upgrade…

Questionable solvency of company

Support is terrible. They had this same lack of support for products sold under Nova Development (Print Explosion), but Parallels support is by far the worst. I waited 66 minutes with no answer. They NEVER respond to emails unless you are buying their product. Once bought, you get no support. Build 3188 does not work anymore on my MacBook Pro 2.33ghz machine, and I cannot get hold of them to get it fixed. I wish…
