AbiWord 2.4.5 (Mac OS X)
I downloaded AbiWord when I discovered that an important document was emailed to me in the wrong format (Wordperfect instead of Word) and I needed to have it in the proper format immediately so I could edit it and print it out. Word would not allow me to open the file in any way, other than as a text file with a bunch of code garbage that would have taken hours to edit out. Abiword opened it, but would not allow me to make any corrections. I was, however, able to save it as a Word file, and work with it in Word as needed. It saved my butt and I am grateful. It's a good little program to have as a complement to a real word processing program, even if it is buggy. [alert admin]

iSquint 1.5 (Mac OS X)
Must have utility for video freaks (2 suggestions though)
iSquint is one of the best freeware programs ever created for the Mac It not only converts a wide array of videos to mp4, it also somehow manages to fix most of the corrupted avi or mpegs I come across. While it's primarily designed to convert vidz for ipods, I mainly use iSquint to convert vidz to mp4 with H.264. If the highest quality setting is used, it upgrades the quality significantly. Two suggestions to the developer: I hate not being able to save my settings when quitting the program, and having to change them every time I open it. Maybe you could tweak it to save whatever settings were last used upon closing, rather than defaulting to the ipod settings. Also, why not include a donation link? I tried Visualhub but found it didn't really offer anything I needed that wasn't already in iSquint. I think a lot of satisfied users might contribute a few bucks voluntarily as a "thank you." Unison 1.8 (Mac OS X)
"Must have" Mac software for avid newsgroupers
For years I used MT-newswatcher for my newsgroup activities, and sometimes spent hours hunting for lost pieces of multi-purpose posts, or wasted time downloading incomplete or corrupted posts that ate up space on my HD while I waited... and waited for the missing pieces which finally never materialized. Although often frustrated, I never realized how much I was missing and how much time I had wasted until I tried Unison. Unison blew my mind with its superbly designed interface, which opens the first time already pre-configured to give you a highly maximized news reader, which performs like magic compared to earlier newsreaders I've tried. The single feature which immediately stands out (and alone is worth the price of the program) is Unison's ability to track down all parts of a multi-part post and group them under one heading for a no hassle two clicks download. On top of that, Unison allows you to filter your groups by selecting Messages, Files, Images or Music. Messages gives you a familiar MT-newswatcher type menu window listing all the messages in the group. The other categories limit the menu listing to whichever category you choose, displaying only headers for messages containing pictures or songs or movies. The layout of Unison is equally impressive. Simple, easy-to-use button panels are front and center, always in the first place you'd look. While newswatcher had a simple "Download" box that showed the basic details of each download stream, Unison's "Transfer" window displays each article separately in a rolling list, with all the details of each article (size, type etc) as well as a speed report (kb/sec) and a progress bar. You can select the number of streams to allow, and the active downloading article streams appear at the top of the Transfer list, which automatically dumps it when it's finished and scrolls up to display the next active one. In summation, Unison is one the the most elegant and user friendly programs ever designed for the Mac. It is also one of the most powerful, in terms of user effort required to get results and satisfaction. Newsgroup fiends used to MT-newswatcher (or similar programs) who haven't yet tried Unison should do so immediately. There are a few tiny things I'd like to see. Both of these suggestions are of minimal importance; they would simply help to perfect an already near perfect application. One would be a "mark as read" button on the group windows, a separate button next to the file display button console. Under the word "search" would be a good spot to place it, not too close to the file display button console, nor close to the edge where it might accidentally be clicked by someone navigating between overlapped windows. Another would be a way to automatically group the messages displayed in the Transfer window, so that removing a group would be as easy as it is to add them. As I said, these suggestions are not critical. They would simply make a very user friendly program into a "lazy friendly" one. [alert admin]

MacPAR deLuxe 3.6.1 (Mac OS X)
Fast Reliable App for Decoding Par Files ***** 5 STARS!! ![]()

I was using two other software products to do what MacPARdeluxe does in one shot. With its simple to use interface, you simply click on the very prominent "open" button at the top left corner of the MacPARdeluxe window. When the "choose selection" window opens, it usually finds the appropriate PAR file needed, or you simply select it manually. The program does the rest, quickly and clearly showing you its progress in a fresh MacPARdeluxe window which opens automatically (saving you the hassle of clearing a window should you be processing multiple PAR files.) MPD analyzes your PAR files, restores whatever files are necessary and lets you know when it is finished. In most cases it unPARs as well, producing a finished file ready to use. In those few cases where it restores your broken files but doesn't decode them automatically, simply use Ajoiner or a similar program to finish up. NOTE: MPD is defaulted to auto-trash some of your PAR bits as it uses them. If you want to save the entire PAR set, you need to change this function in the program's preferences. MacPARdeluxe is the FIRST program you should try if getting into PAR extraction. It does the job right (at least in 10.3.9) and is very fast and extremely reliable. Thank you, Mr. Putter! PodTube 1.0 (Mac OS X)
Does exactly what I want it to, on OS 10.3.9. If DLing flvs to your desktop be sure to uncheck the Add to iTunes box and it'll convert them automatically to mpegs. Hope it keeps working. A true gift. Thanks!! [alert admin]

RAR Expander 0.8.4 (Mac OS X)
Works Great BUT Sometimes Needs Help From UnRarX ![]()

This app has been very stable and when applied to complete and uncorrupted files it works perfectly. Most files I've downloaded tend to be corrupted to some degree, however, and only by processing them through UnRarX first will Rar Expander work on them. Of course this would vary with your news server, but in my case, I'd estimate that 80% of the files I've downloaded needed to be pre-processed with UnRarX before Rar Expander could handle them. This is not a knock on Rar Expander. The documentation explains its license limitations. Together the two programs are dynamic, stable and essential. [alert admin]

UnRarX 2.2 (Mac OS X)
Great App - First Best Step in Decoding RARs on Mac ![]()

This app is a true gift. It seems most split RAR files posted on newsgroups are corrupted or incomplete. Even after downloading all available RAR segments and whatever PAR files are supplied, the files often cannot be expanded by Rar Expander or other apps. Processing such files through UnRarX could not be easier and it has a very high success rate for rebuilding damaged files. Simply drag all the files onto the UnRarX window and it goes to work, checking and repairing, or reporting what files are needed if the repair is impossible. After processing, files that wouldn't expand in Rar Expander can now be expanded, rendering them playable in QT-based players or other common players. Simply awesome. [alert admin]

AJoiner 2.1.6 (Mac OS X)
I downloaded this to join newsgroup files like mpg.001 series, which is what it's intended to do. I've joined several sets and never had a problem. In some cases, where files had been ajoiner segments and I mistakenly had converted them to mpegs by deleting the appended number sequences, I was able to reconvert simply by copying and pasting the info type from similar files, and restoring the numerical suffixes. It doesn't seem to work on other series (which weren't originally split and encoded as numbered ajoiner files) but I haven't really tried it on many types. For its intended purpose it rocks. Very easy, stable and reliable. [alert admin]
