Microsoft Office 2008 12.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Not backward compatible with itself

The vast majority of my older version of Word documents that have anything more in them than just plain text have issues. Word 2004 displays these documents just fine - Word 2008 butchers them. I even tried saving the documents in Word 2004 as varying formats and Word 2008 still mangled them upon import. Diagrams that I created outside of the M$ universe and then pasted into Word now either don't show up at all or have annoying artifacts. Equations that worked just fine before are now replaced by the word 'Error!'. In short, a completely useless upgrade for me. I can't believe I gave those guys my money. Oh yea, even though I purchased Office 2008 as a brand new package, if you have any issues it'll cost you $50 per incident to deal with THEIR bugs. Now that's classic Microsoft service for a new customer who just plonked down a few hundred dollars! [alert admin]

TypeIt4Me X 4.0.2 (Mac OS X)

OK, but plagued with intermittently bad expansions

I've been using this product for over a year and have been at the developer for most of that time to deal with an infuriating issue with the text expansions. I've found the developer to be much more interested in adding features than fixing issues. On the average, about once in every couple dozen expansions (I have a library of over 2500 expansions) the expanded text gets all mangled e.g. the result is some combination of the abbreviation and the final text, or it fails to include the trigger character, or the expansion occurs in the middle of the following word etc. It's true you can really blast along typing at higher speeds (although I'm just a medium speed 4 finger peck and shoot typist), but I'm sure spending a lot of time having to meticulously proof read the result of my typing to fix all the expansion mangling. I also own Typinator and TextExpander and they don't have this problem. The ONLY reason I've been putting up with TypeIt4Me is because it does single-character expansions and the competition didn't. I've been urging the developer of Typinator to implement this feature and he's finally released a version that does it! However, his implementation has a couple killer limitations that must to be addressed before I jump ship, but he's getting there. [alert admin]

Parallels Desktop 3.0 Build 5580 (Mac OS X)

So what changed since a week ago?

Build 5570 was released 7 days ago with an extensive list of changes, but no mention of any changes for this release. Presumably something was diabolically wrong with the old version for this new version to be posted so quickly. Oh! Wait a minute - I don't see the word BETA anywhere. Maybe that's it... ElectricSheep 2.6.9 (Mac OS X)

Worse than the previous version...

Same graphic tearing artifacts as the previous version on my 17" MacBook Pro and now there's an annoying quarter second pause between every sheep transition. I'm going to down-grade. [alert admin]

Little Snitch 2.0 beta 8 (Mac OS X)

Leave the beta testing to the beta testers

There's a new growing trend for developers over the past year or so to throw their beta software out onto version tracker or macupdate for general public feedback. I'm not looking forward to a year from now when the version tracker traffic is triple what it is today due to betas for pretty much everything. It's always kind of tempting to try these out. Imagine if Apple posted all the Leopard betas here, I guarantee the temptation would get the better of many unsuspecting folks. Imagine if the FDA did this... In the case of LittleSnitch, I've found all this beta stuff to be quite problematic and I'm sorry I participated in their testing. So I've learned a lesson and I'll wait for the real McCoy. Ordinarily, software posted here is pretty robust and, because it isn't beta, isn't really likely to harm your machine as much as something not ready for prime time. Maybe the version tracker guys should consider making a beta section and nip this in the bud. Now let the flood of 'you brought it upon yourself' responses begin... [alert admin]

G-Force 3.7.1 (Mac OS X)

Please change the price in Version Tracker

to reflect that what is shown is a yearly subscription fee rather than the usual method. I got stuck with a buggy mini-release and before they fixed it my $20 renewal fee came up. I don't mind paying something for when the next x.0 release comes out, but I never even got to see the end of my current version before I was required to pay again (which I didn't). Aside from that, I do agree this is good software. [alert admin]

Awaken 3.1b2 (Mac OS X)

Great product, but...

it doesn't work if your computer is set up so that you have to enter a password for either of waking from sleep or if the screen saver is active. That completely kills things for me, otherwise I'd buy this in a heartbeat. [alert admin]

Aqua4iTunes 3.0.4 (Mac OS X)

Beware: developer cannot be contacted!

I tried to install this - it started doing something but then I got the error message The variable theicon is not defined. (-2753) The author (Paul Barlow) has not made available any contact details either in his website or in the About dialog box for Aqua4iTunes. If his software mangles your computer (you need to enter your admin password to run this) then you are up the creek. You would think someone who has taken the time to develop a piece of software through several versions would provide some mechanism to gather feedback, bug reports and suggestions (other than inappropriate avenues like VT). Aqua4iTunes 2.0b1 (Mac OS X)

Thank You!!!

Man Oh Man is iTunes7 fugly! I sincerely hope this isn't what Apple have in store for us with Leopard - there will be a riot. Anyway, this program just works and nicely restores the beautiful Aqua look. Many thanks to the author. [alert admin]

PodWorks 2.8.5 (Mac OS X)

Abandon-ware?

This product hasn't been updated in a year and it contains a pretty annoying bug. If you transfer a bunch of iPod songs into your iTunes library then from within iTunes everything looks just fine. However, take a look at the actual music files in the Finder and you will see all of the file names are actually complete jibberish. The author has known about this bug for a few months... I lost my AirDisk (AirPort connected hard drive)

I believe this update only updated the Airport Utility application. It didn't automatically do anything to the airport extreme base station. I'm not clear how your airport extreme world could have changed by updating an application. Did you subsequently use the Airport Utility to re-configure your base station?

So what changed since a week ago?

The answer to my own question appeared in the read me stuff during installation. Looks like it's still in Beta: What's New in Parallels Desktop 3.0 for Mac Release Candidate (Build 5580) • Primary OS support - Leopard compatibility improvement • Virtual devices - USB devices compatibility improvement (including National Instruments) • Shared Applications and SmartSelect - Option 'Remove SmartSelect file associations' during Parallels Desktop uninstallation added Bugfixes and improvements in Parallels Desktop 3.0 for Mac Release Candidate (Build 5580) • Primary OS support • Leopard support…

Trial Expiry

I'm a fully paid up user so I've got no beef with any trial stuff. I will however say that the solution of starting up a whole new user account just to try out some software is completely unacceptable. Your software could look at it's hidden file (or whatever) and figure out if it has been tested previously, then make sure something like 2 weeks has passed after the previous demo expiration date before re-enabling another…

Spelling mistake

Just lending some moral support to the first poster. I too think long and hard about running utilities containing silly spelling mistakes. I consider them an indicator of the integrity of the programmer. If he lets a typo through due to lack of proof reading or spell checking, then some other silly/trivial mistake is also likely to exist in the code itself.

Beware: developer cannot be contacted!

You're right, so I guess I take back my comments. However, reading through the VT comments reveals some others who also couldn't figure out how to contact the author. He needs to be a little less obscure. I'll pass along suggestions regarding this, as well as the bug I experienced, to him. Thanks for pointing this out.

Changing the Icon not workin here either!

Same here - I can't install due to Applescript error: The variable theicon is not defined. (-2753) Also, there's no way (that I noticed) to contact you from your website, so I must post my additional comments here. When you cycle through the options on the installation screen, the All Aqua style nicely shows consistency where the selected icon in the group of 4 buttons on the bottom has a blue background just like…
